Big, small, brown, furry and soft — Cambrian College's student centre was filled with bears of all kinds.
On Nov.22, Cambrian College students put on the “Teddy Bear Picnic” from 1 to 3 p.m. in Cambrian College’s Student Centre, in collaboration with the Canadian Cancer Society to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.
Susie Morphet, senior coordinator of community partnerships for the Canadian Cancer Society, said the event is expected to raise roughly $6,000.
“We always hope to get a lot of people, this is a great turnout,” Morphet said. “I think this is the largest turnout we've had. It's great to see everyone out.”
Erica Bouchard, a second-year police foundations student at Cambrian College, who helped organize the event, was worried about the turnout at first, but things picked up.
“I was a little scared there wouldn't be as much turnout as there is, but there is definitely a good turnout,” Bouchard said.
The event featured 150 bears.
Students from the College’s Police Foundations and Child and Youth Worker programs organized this year’s event, which featured a silent and live auction of teddy bears.
Children’s activities included a colouring contest and a kids-only silent auction table.
The “Teddy Bear Picnic” is an annual event run by the Canadian Cancer Society, and all funds raised by the auction will go towards pediatric cancer research. Cambrian College students have taken a lead role in organizing the event in Sudbury for the past three years.
