Construction on the next phase of Highway 69 improvements, which will widen and align the highway from Estaire to Highway 637, began Nov. 5.

The cost of the project, estimated at $76.9 million, has been partially funded by the federal government's Building Canada fund to the tune of $35.8 million. The province of Ontario will pay the rest through the Northern Highways program.

"I am pleased that today we are officially launching construction of a project that will create jobs and opportunities for our community, and ensure that Ontarians have a safe and modern highway to travel on in the future," said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci, in a news release.

The provincial and federal governments are investing about $11 billion in joint funding for more than 2,600 projects through programs such as the Infrastructure Stimulus fund, Building Canada fund, and the Knowledge and Infrastructure program.

"We are looking forward to continuing a partnership that is promoting job creation and economic development, as well as creating a new, modern infrastructure for Canada's national highway system through Ontario," said John Baird, Transport and Infrastructure Minister.
