The provincial government will be investing $1 million towards the production of a film being shot locally by Sudbury native, Brandon Nutt, Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced Friday.

Nutthouse Moving Pictures Company Ltd. will receive the funding through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

Nutt began the project following his return home after working on a variety of film projects in Hollywood, California.

“The McGuinty government recognizes the importance of investing in Sudbury’s burgeoning entertainment sector,” Bartolucci said. “I am pleased that we are able to support the work of Brandon Nutt, an aspiring young producer with roots in our community.”

The horror-thriller film is titled “Phase One.”

“I am excited about the prospects the film industry holds in Northern Ontario,” Nutt said. “With the continued backing of entities such as the NOHFC and community leaders such as Rick Bartolucci, the City of Greater Sudbury has the elements needed to make a run at sustaining production of feature films, television series and commercials in the region,” said Brandon Nutt. “The entire creative team is grateful for the support of Mr. Bartolucci and the McGuinty government which has led to a successful shoot thus far.”

The NOHFC has made investments in other movies filmed in Greater Sudbury such as “Shania: A Life in Eight Albums” and “Killing Zelda Sparks”

The local television production sector has also received NOHFC investments in programs such as the critically-acclaimed cartoon Chilly Beach and Meteo+.

  • Just goes to show you...the foodbank can probably ship a couple of tons of food to a third world country and still meet our local needs.

  • I see the insurance companies etc are throwing hams into the Local 6500 food buckets......this must make you guys proud Local 6500.......taking food from the people you recognized as needy and were donating to only 12 months ago.

  • I've read the Sudbury Food bank has a large variety to choose from...several locations and they deliver too.

  • Again MAXI, what does your post have to do with the topic at hand?

  • horror-thriller isn't it?

  • war movie?
isn't this a science fiction movie about some type of clinical testing or regeneration?
I may be crossing two topics here...lol
    this is a war movie?

  • Is this the first war movie that is filmed in Sudbury?

  • curran, were aren't far from the 50's right now and it is a direct result of the old boys club at city hall.

So stacy, you read an article and are an expert?
are you also assuming that all of these"100 jobs" will be filled by the local population?
bringing spending money in to a town is not the same as creating jobs or wealth.

This is a good thing though, it is nice to see another industry in town, that is for sure!

I don't have a problem with the funding that is what it is there for.
Good luck brandon, I hope I get the chanc to see this on the big screen, you got oneo ticket sold for sure!

    Peace!

  • I thank the good lord that these negative people aren't the ones making decisions for this city. Can you imagine where we'd be then? 1950's that's where. lol

  • what a waste..

  • Tapped Out -- it's called paying attention to other news stories that have run about movies shooting here -- they say each movie hires about 100 people to be crew and to be extras and stuff like that. See I read all the stories to get the bigger picture - I don't just read one and get all pissy.

  • Where does it say it created a hundred jobs Stacey?

  • Well call me crazy but I think in these tough economic times anyone that comes to town and creates about 100 jobs is a good thing. Tell me who else around here is doing that?

  • Who wants to bet that this movie is a flop and loses money?Once again the Libs waste money. Thanks again Mcguinty and company for putting the province into massive debt.

  • What some are thinking is it would be nice if they maybe would go to the homeless shelters and maybe offer some jobs to the unemployed as backups in these movies they are shooting, this could kill 2 birds with one stone, provide employment to the less fortunate and grow the economy. But the jobs will probably go to the buddies of Mr nut.

  • I say let the government give out LOANS but outright gifts is ludicrous!! I am not supprised by this however since that is how all governments work --take care of the interest groups they are always the loudest at election time. They are buying their jobs with our money.

  • Good grief couldn't they have done something much better with this money? Hellooooooo our health care? Unemployment?

  • Stacey, the whole point is that really, $100,000,000 in tax money is a heck of a lot that could have been better allocated to serve a greater purpose than in arts and culture and or "Emerging Technologies". Do you realize that the funding that the provincial government gives to non profit organisations that feed the children, the down and out, abused women and children for shelters and programs, addiction programs, in total across the Sudbury district together does not amount to half of that money given to this non essential program intiuative? The provincial government allocates small amounts from the Solicitor General to non profits like Sudbury Sexual Assault Center, VICARS (a victim assistance program) and other such programs with aproximately a contribution of $30,000 to $70,000 total,to be applied for or renewed annually. The United way, and Trillium Foundation help to support other non profits like the food banks , Elizabeth Fry and John Howard Society, and Access Aids, and the Sudbury Women's Center etc. with contributions of less than $100.000 (more like about $30,000 each annually. These unfortunately essential programs are in dire need of additional funds to keep operational. Churches, and other service groups contribute what they can to the needy, but cannot fund the whole program, like the Soup Kitchen, The Mission, The Samaratan Center... Why would the Ontario government put aside millions of dollars for arts programs, yet so little towards essential nade necessary programs. This seems absurd. Private Corporations often tend to support the Arts, rather than the needy and Social Services Non Profits, therefore the bulk of the donated funds should be sponsored by corporations, who actually get to enjoy the arts more than the average citzens who cant afford to go to the events anyway. The tax payers dollars should be allocated for services to help our poor and distitute, and struggling working poor, moreso than to fund private theatr

  • Well stated Stacey. That's what I meant when I said, that's what the money is there for. (But you said it much better.) Mind you these are the same individuals that state that people who use food banks and get assistance are bums that should get jobs. Go figure.

  • Well the money is from the Northern Ontario Heritage FUND -- meaning it's a FUND that is SUPPOSED to give out money. It's not like they took this money out of the hands of starving children. Look it up -- this particular fund is called "Emerging Technologies" and I'm pretty sure if you've noticed the tons of film crews around town lately, obviously filmmaking is this town seems to be an "emerging" new business here. The food bank isn't eligible for this program anyway. This fund is designed to support spending in the North -- last time I checked, people making movies spent tons of money where they shoot.

And it's a LOAN. Which means the government is going to make its money back. More than you can say for a lot of goverment hand-outs.

  • I think in times like these, the money could have been better spent.

  • I completly agree with you share the wealth. I bet the sudbury food bank could desperatly use the million bucks. Maybe we could put it towards the second career initiative that is broke way too soon. Mr nut has had the easy life his whole life dont think that there wasnt some back scratching involved politically getting this money to him.

  • Congratulations Brandon on your success! But then you did get your start here in Sudbury. Thanks Bartolucci for investing the money, that's what it's there for. "To make money, you've got to spend money."

  • Unreal! Though I appreciate theatre and arts and culture as much as most people, I cannot fatham how a goverment running a huge deficit as presently the case, could have possibly found $ 1, 000, 000, 000 to give to arts, while people continue to go hungry, go without housing, lack proper health care, dental care, vision care, mental health and addiction services, elderly care, child care and affordable educational facilities and programs etc. This is obscene.
