Laurentian University engineering student Lauren Flett has won the Canadian Mineral Processors' (CMP) annual student essay contest.

On top of a $2,000 cash prize, Flett has been invited to participate, all expenses paid, in the CMP National Conference in Ottawa in January, 2010.

Flett's essay, entitled Effect of Fine Grinding in the Copper-Lead Flotation Circuit and Alternative Reagent Study for Zinc Rougher Flotation, was selected among eight student essays coming from universities across the country. Second and third prizes were awarded to students from McGill and Laval universities, respectively.

CMP's primary goal is to promote knowledge and professions in mineral processing through education. Mineral processing is the practice of separating valuable minerals from their ores.

The 42nd Annual Canadian Mineral Processors Conference will feature presentations on aspects of mineral processing including plant design and plant improvements, operations, new ideas and technologies, precious metals, laboratory and pilot plant testing.
