Local 6500 strikers at the Vale Inco Clarabelle site, dressed in Halloween costumes, held a rally on Friday Oct. 30 that caused police to be called.

At about 8:50 p.m. Greater Sudbury Police Services were called for assistance by Vale Security in relation to strikers.

“Security forces reported to police that strikers present at that location had pushed over a large generator. Upon police arrival, approximately 50-60 strikers, most who were wearing Halloween costumes and masks were observed in the area,” stated a media release by Sgt. Karrie Burke, dated 5 p.m. Oct. 31.

“Officers who responded to the call were able to calm the situation by speaking with all involved parties.”

Steelworkers Local 6500 president John Fera said the strikers were having a Halloween rally. He was not present and had few details other than stating that the company was investigating the activity. He ventured the generator was probably used to power lighting in the area.

But a short time after departing the scene police were required to re-attend as the strikers had gone through the gate and were again approaching the mill.

“After discussions with Vale Security, a representative of the USW, and the police, picketers who were in attendance departed for the evening. Members of the USW were to return this morning to assist with cleaning up the site.”

Police reported no injuries or physical altercations during the event. The matter is still under investigation, said police.

  • you guys can come over to my house as well, i don't have any expensive scotch or cars to flip, but i'm always up for a few beers and a good fistfight!!!

  • Of course our 'contributions' will be deleted.Your type of attitude........just brings the worst out in people

  • Mario
email your address.......I assume its Single Malt Scotch.
    Forget the beer.
Hope you have at least a 40 or rings and I.

You can suck up the beer

  • Not at all..............i even have a case of beer ready for us,and some very expensive scotch.

My wife wants know what kind of appetizers you would enjoy.

Hey,feel free to bring your wife or girlfriend

  • So.......the USW of America (head office in Pittsburgh) arranged for a bus to take members of Local 6500 from the Union Office to Clarabelle Road and then don't have the class to accept responsibility for the people they trucked up there......happy to let people like OP & UW & Mario blame the results of this gathering of strikers in costumes on the wind.

WOW!!!!!!!! I am beginning to feel sorry for these poor losers

  • When 2 youths torch the Steelworkers' Hall in an act of arson (equal to vandalism), the Union was all upset. They wanted blood.
Now they do the same thing by destroying another's property, wearing masks, and its 'the wind'.
Some union to be proud of. Hypocrites to the maximum.

  • Great idea 'rings'.PLEASE come to my house first, and identify yourself.

P.S.......Northern Life, please do not take this the wrong way..........i just want to invite him in for coffee, and discuss matters.

  • Hey people of sudbury, us normal people who work for a living and are not lazy and refuse 30 an hour jobs with good benefits and pensions. We should be able to rally a whole bunch of people together and go to any strikers house or property or any person's business or house that has one of those " we support a fair deal " signs, and topple over their cars or trucks. Maybe smash their windows. We could blame it on high winds. If there is no wind, we could just do it for fun. Maybe then the strikers would get off their butts and go back to work.

  • You know,'overpaid',when you see some of these comments, you can ALWAYS tell which people had it easy and never had to fight for anything in their lives.

Omg,i wish i wouldnt have said that.I can bet my life there will will be a whole pile of "sad stories'from these people now.........i can just see it coming

  • i really don't know mars. i wasn't there, but, if mikek says it's feasible it probably is.???

  • Just another expense to add to the strike. Now the private security firm has to stay on the line, not just shift change.
There was even 1 posted at the secretary`s gate in the cliff sunday dayshift and there wasn`t even a picket team assigned there. It has to be coming out of some ones pocket AFI`s...
    Vale whatever.

  • Its feasible mars, it apparantly blew over a large generator.

  • Haha! mars! Touche indeed!

  • So overpaid, did the wind blow the workers through the gate too?

  • That's the way to do it 6500. Show everyone your maturity level.

  • "Police reported no injuries or physical altercations during the event."
sounds to me like a peaceful rally.
those light stands are very top heavy, i'm sure the police are investigating the high winds that we had friday night.
there are camera's everywhere on vale property, if it were 6500 members i bet they would have been arrested on the spot.
vale is abusing our police services, and, wasting our tax dollars by calling the police everytime more than 4 people show up at a picket line. just to try to make the strikers look bad. it kinda reminds me of the tattle tale in the schoolyard.
    WAY TO GO BOYS!!!!!!!!!!

  • So this is how people behave in the REAL world Mario? Did you go with them to toilet paper some peoples houses afterwards?

Tell me exactly how destroying property and having the police called on you twice is helping the strikers situation. Think you can give a judicious answer for once?

  • Next time Vale should hide a group of security guards inside the fence line. When anybody like picketers venture onto the property, past clearly posted no trespassing signs and over fences, they should grab them and hold them for police.
Demand the violators be charged with mischief, trespassing, break and enter, wearing a disguise when committing a criminal offence.
Once the masks are removed, we can all see who the cowards really are. Then Fera can denounce them and kick them out of the union after Vale fires them too.
Our city won't tolerate thuggery. This is another black eye for a union that continues to lose the public relations battle and have little public support.

  • Hey,drifter, you were a 'packsack' miner, jumping from one contactor to another, one mine to the next, werent you?

You didnt have to worry about fighting for your job, since you never lasted long enough at one correct?

And 'Mike',you are the QUINTESSENTIAL........book savvy, educated to the max intellectual..........who,unfortunately,has limited knowledge of the REAL world

  • I used to do stuff like this with my buddies. When I was 13.

  • conniex
Because you're only pawns in Leo G's game and you have no choice but the USW of America.
only 8 1/2 months and you can kick them out.

  • why does usw pay the drivetest strikers get paid $400 per week when we only get $200 per week????

  • Another peaceful demonstration.
    Well done Brothers/Sisters
