H1N1 flu continues to be a problem in Greater Sudbury, according to a release late Friday from Sudbury Regional Hospital.
The situation is as follows stated media relations officer Sean Barrette.
-six patients are on ventilators in Critical Care-H1N1 confirmed or probable
-an additional two patients remain in Critical Care with influenza-like symptoms
-the Surgical Program continues to monitor critical care capacity and perform scheduled surgery on a case by case basis
-17 surgeries were cancelled this week
-Critical Care capacity remains low-acceptance to the critical care unit (ICU) is considered on a case by case basis
-Emergency Department(ED)volumes continue to surge
-General public encouraged to manage influenza-like symptoms at home if possible, and visit the ED if symptoms worsen-i.e. shortness of breath and severe dehydration
Residents are being advised that regular hand washing is one of the best methods of preventing the spread of influenza and other infectious viruses. “It is important that you use the hand washing stations, located at every public entrance and in each patient room, every time upon entering and exiting (the hospital),” said Barrette.
For the safety of staff and other people waiting for care, patients in the ED are reminded that if they determine they should wear a mask or are instructed to do so by ED staff, it is imperative they follow those instructions and keep it properly in place until asked to remove it by a medical professional.
