The City of Greater Sudbury received a cheque for $5 million today from Vale Inco as a contribution to the upgrades of the Onaping and Levack water systems.

Those systems transfer to the city from Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel on Nov. 30. The cheque was presented to Mayor John Rodriguez at an event hosted at the Onaping water storage tank this morning.

“This very generous donation will go a long way to assisting us in delivering clean, safe water to the communities of Onaping and Levack,” said Mayor John Rodriguez. “It is in part thanks to
community partners’ acts of goodwill such as this that we are able to continue providing service and delivery excellence.”

As the new owner of the Onaping and Levack water supply system, the City of Greater Sudbury has upgraded treatment and supply systems previously operated by Xstrata Nickel.

Upgrades include construction of a third well, construction of a new water storage tank in Onaping, construction of a water main from the Wickwas Well to the new storage tank, construction of a new pressure control/booster station, and construction of two trunk water mains from Onaping to Levack.

The funds received from Vale Inco are a contribution to the upgrade of this water supply system.

“We consider this donation a reflection of our ongoing partnership with the City on many fronts. It will go a long way in reducing the capital burden as they take over this improved facility that will provide safe, reliable drinking water for the residents in this area,” said John Pollesel, Vale Inco, Vice President Production Services and Support, Canadian / UK Operations.

The City of Greater Sudbury and its contractors have already begun the process of testing and inspecting each step of a new water treatment and delivery process, and the system will be fully operational on Nov. 30 when it is transferred.

“This is very good news for the communities of Onaping and Levack, and for the City of Greater Sudbury as a whole,” said Claude Berthiaume, the city councillor for the area. “Vale Inco’s contribution speaks to the power of partnerships in the betterment of communities.”

  • Oh ya I forgot, we want it all now. I guess they could have waited until they were forced into this. Deadlines, then extensions past the deadlines and the work takes forever to get done and who suffers in the mean time?

  • How many millions and millions would it take to make it right muff. 5 million isn't much to this type of company. They also get tax credited for it as well and it is supposed to make them look like they care. The Ministry of Environment is all over them for many non-compliance issues.

  • And who kicked in the cash medic..........Sanata Claus?

  • They were fully aware of the environmental responsibility when they bought this company and where the run off from the tailings pond were going for all those years. SO NOW THEY OWN THAT PROBLEM Muff.

  • how long has Vale been doing this medic?? for decades you state........lol. I thought Vale purchased Inco 3 years ago. Isn`t a decade 10 years? And you speak of others making silly comments, the shame.

  • They have only been only poisoning Levack and Onaping for decades now with their tailings ponds running into their ground water. Way to go Vale!

  • And yes, thanks Vale, for the generous donation.

  • Thank you Vale Inco for for the money you gave to help the Onaping and Levack water systems. You are a great company.

  • Chump change, but we'll take it. XStrata, your turn now. Seeing as these 2 companies have put so many Sudburians out of work with layoffs, we'll be needing all the help we can get to pay for this luxury that comes out of our tap.
Or we could just raise the taxes for everybody again.
I like the first idea better.

  • Grateful for OK .The transfer to the city from Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel on Nov. 30. will include the future cost of operating and maintaining them --- passed to the rate payer.
JR says...“This very generous donation ($5 million) will go a long way to assisting us in delivering clean, safe water to the communities of Onaping and Levack,” “It is in part thanks to community partners’ acts of goodwill such as this that we are able to continue providing service and delivery excellence.” There was no good will to the tax payer in this deal. John Pollesel says its a capital burden. No corporate responsibility here.
Then Claude Berthiaume says..“This is very good news for the communities of Onaping and Levack, and for the City of Greater Sudbury as a whole,” said , the city councillor for the area. “Vale Inco’s contribution speaks to the power of partnerships in the betterment of communities.”I bet Claude cant find a 6500 striker to agree with that.

  • hey hockeylife, how about you quit your crying and say thank you, this 5 million would otherwise be coming out of our tax dollars. How have you helped the community lately that you can criticize someones 5 million dollar donation?

  • 5 million canadian dollars... must be what was saved in wages since they lay-off many more workers.

  • isn't in it what we are already paying for a driving licence and vehicle ownership & plate suppose to go into???

  • 5 million for the water what about the roads. I think that we start charging for every truck that they put on the road with their product. Our roads are because of their hauling. Ask the people of Onaping and Levack about their roads. While the city is at it charge Xstrata also and we will have roads that we can drive on. Look at the projects just completed. Ask the people of the valley how long the new road way by Confederation Highschool will last with trucks driving over that. Ask the people of Garson how long their new road will last with the mining trucks driving on it. Come on city hall pass a bylaw and charge per truck using the city roads and you can stop complaining that you do not get enough tax money from them. Hey, Vale shut the road from regional to Copper Cliff we can decide what we can do with our roads.

  • here is rodriguez whispering and mumbling to himself .... uhmmm I like there cookies too... mhmmm maybe I should ask for more... oops right I have to make it look like I work for the community interest,... oohhh better ask for forgiveness about what i just did to my local 6500...better take a stand with vale.... thye now have the power to terminate me also...

ya where is the axe going to hit next ??

  • Good work and congratulations to Vale for the contribution.Where is Xstrata's share?
