The Greater Sudbury Coalition to End Violence Against Women is launching an education initiative by placing colorful, bilingual posters on city buses.

“A lot of people use public transportation to get around in this town,” said coalition co-chair Ginette Demers, pictured at left. “This poster will get people to think about their own attitudes and actions when it comes to speaking out against violence.” She holds a poster up with campaign supporter Bill Tuttle of the Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club. The Greater Sudbury Coalition to End Violence Against Women actively works towards eliminating the social, political, systemic and economic conditions that perpetuate violence against women.

  • We can never end the cycle of family violence if we continue ignoring male victims and female perpetrators. If we continue ignoring half of the problem then we will never end the cycle of family violence that is taught to children.

The mountain of current research is resounding that domestic violence is NOT a gender issue.

It is simply ignorant and discriminatory to continue social policy based on feminist ideology and outdated, widley refuted and biased research by Peter Jaffe et al. that only concentrated on studying women from abuse shelters and men from abuser treatment programs.

    GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

“Domestic abuse of women has been in the public eye for many years. Many studies have examined its nature and extent, shelters for abused women have been set up, and legislation and police charging policies have evolved in response to the growing appreciation of the extent of the problem. THE EXTENT OF THE COMPARABLE ISSUE OF DOMESTIC ABUSE OF MEN is not as well known and understood by the general public. However, recent findings have become available that contribute to a better understanding of domestic or intimate partner abuse of men.”

Statistics Canada first collected data on intimate partner abuse of both men and women through its 1999 General Social Survey (GSS). Respondents were asked 10 questions concerning abuse by their current and/or previous spouses and common-law partners during the 12-month and 5-year periods preceding the telephone interview. According to their responses, ALMOST EQUAL PROPORTIONS OF MEN AND WOMEN (7% and 8% respectively) had been victims of intimate partner physical and psychological abuse (18% and 19% respectively). These findings were consistent with several earlier studies which reported equal rates of abuse by women and men in intimate relationships.

According to these numbers, there are at least one million Canadian men witho

  • One Flaw In Men

Men have strengths that amaze women.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.

They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
    They stand up to injustice.

They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.

They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
    They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.

They are happy when they hear about
    a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they
think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
    can heal a broken heart.

Men come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.

The heart of a man is what
    makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.
    They have compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their
    family and friends.

Men have vital things to say
    and everything to give.

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN MEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

  • @skndstry 10/2/2009 9:50:32 AM - Report Abuse Ah yes, the old "men suffer as much abuse as women" line.
    ______________________________________________________
You seem to discount violence against men or indeed by extension violence by a smaller person against a larger person as Lesbian DV is greater than hetero DV. The excuse that it is a woman victim in those cases doesn't work in quite the same manner.

It is true women are injured more - but then many studies show they initiate the violence more as well. Why you ask? Perhaps because they think they can get away with it due to prevailing sensibilities. Guess what, further studies show if they don't initiate it they won't get injured.

I always find it curious how many of you act as apologists for female violence. Men do get injured and killed as do children. Women are the gender more likely to kill or injure their children by a wide margin in the USA and Australia. In Canada long term studies show a similar conclusion.

There is $208,000,00.00 available for women's issues in this Province including DV shelter funding. None for men. Men do get battered and killed. Given you think violence is wrong would you support funding for men to get the help they need? Would you support a family approach to help members exposed to violence on a model like the Calgary Counselling Centre?

  • Ah yes, the old "men suffer as much abuse as women" line.

One of your cherished "50 domestic violence myths" actually tries to use the issue of prison rape as evidence that this is true!! (By definition perpetrated by men, but it serves to show everyone else how ludicrous their arguments are!) Lol.

The same list can't help but confirm that far more women are killed or badly hurt every year due to domestic violence than men - in horrifically high numbers in fact - even as it tries to diminish the issue.

The bottom line is that men are stronger than women, do more damage when they hit, and go much farther when it escalates.

If my wife punches me in the face and I punch her back, it is true that she acted first, it is true that we have abused each other, and it is true that our act was the same.

However, the outcome will not be. I can break bones with one punch. My wife can't.

Try as your precious Media Radar might by highlighting the worst examples of violence perpetrated by women (and I acknowledge that it does exist), it cannot and will not put the numbers up beside each other, will it? Because if they were to do an honest comparison of ER visits, injuries, or deaths, the numbers would be completely lopsided.

So, the question becomes - what are both your motives?

Corruption Central has a slanderous and borderline insane website dedicated to railing against a system that he feels is denying him access to his children.

I can only imagine why. But thou dost definitely protest too much.

As for MAT - I would find it hard to believe you've found a woman who would put up with a blow hard like you. And I suspect your anonymous bark is far worse than your real bite.

  • Well put corruptioncentral.
The Domestic Violence/Womens groups is a huge industry. Employing thousands across the country. They are very political and with every dollar gain political power for their anti-male agendas.
Violence against women has the pendulum swung so far to their side that any normal debate is shouted down.
Look at the gold-rush of funding.

  • Liberals backtrack over cuts to victims' support
    $440,000 shortfall caused big uproar
    The ProvinceSeptember 30, 2009
The B.C. government backtracked Tuesday and restored $440,000 in funding to organizations that provide domestic-violence counselling.

Solicitor-General Kash Heed made the announcement in a news release, after his government faced a wave of criticism in recent days for slashing funding to women's groups.

"These programs are vital to preventing domestic violence because they provide counselling and support to vulnerable women and children," said Heed. "By moving to protect these important frontline services, we can support victims and minimize future risk."

In August, the Liberal government consolidated $16.47 million in domestic-violence funding under the Ministry of Public Safety and the Solicitor-General. Although it has tried in recent days to promote the move as a funding increase, the province had actually cut $440,000 in what it called "budget pressures."

Domestic-violence support groups across the province blasted the government for the reduction, saying the lost money threatened programs to help counsel children who have witnessed violence, along with outreach programs to help battered women.

The criticism fell on the same day last week as a damning report by B.C.'s child and youth representative, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, who said the province's system for handling domestic violence lacks proper co-ordination.

Women's groups were pleased with the government's reversal Tuesday.

"That's great news," said Carolyn Fast, executive director of the Victoria Women's Transition House Society. "And I definitely think it's the right thing to do. It certainly helps us. It's not huge dollars but it's one more thing."

Heed also extended funding for a victims'-services worker at the New Westminster Police Department's domestic

  • The feminist lobby and the domestic violence industry have joined forces with the anti-father, anti-husband socialist man-haters who make up the justice system and run the country. As usual we are only hearing one side of the story. Why is it we never hear about husbands who are abused by their wives? It is a lot more common than the feminist lobbies and the Domestic Violence industry would like us to know. Statistics Canada reports that the number of women abusing their male partners is nearly the same as men abusing their female partners.

  • Oh dear MAT. What is that saying about "a little bit of knowledge" again?

So now THIS is going to be your bible and sole proof? A one-source opinion piece that is sketchy on facts (and yes, I DID read the references and footnotes - did you?), makes ridiculous claims, and presents little but a defensive picture that attempts to diminish facts that are in an of themselves horrifying?

Good for you. If you are satisfied with slapping layer of ignorance upon layer of ignorance and it helps you sleep at night with smug assurance that you have been "right" and somehow made any effective change with your pathetic posts here, then that is wonderful.

I would dearly love an opportunity to debate you publicly with an impartial moderator, because it would so easy to reveal you for the intellectual fraud that you are.

  • Sure MAT...put down these honest people's effort, and then try to be the "winner" again.I'll bet "What do you say to a woman with two black eyes?" gets you roaring really loud, huh?...you obviously will put down any cause if you can find ANY shred of evidence to the contrary, and get a battle going....increase your dosage, see the nice man more often, and don't pick on the less fortunate, and more feeble ( not in mind) than you!...just my opinion.

  • Shoot the messenger Sceptic. A familiar pattern.
When the truth is too hard to handle, try and erode the credibility of the source or just fall to insults with no logical retort.
Hummmmm, there's a union in town that is employing the same strategy.

  • Obviously many people and business donate. Violence against anyone is not good. esp[ecially children. Why the focus has to be on women only is beyond me. Why make make violence a gender issue? It affects men, women and children...

  • $4 billion abuse industry rooted in deceptions and lies And ALL this at taxpayers expense folks
Erin Pizzey is a genial woman with snow-white hair, cherubic cheeks, and an easy smile. It wasn't always that way. The daughter of an English diplomat, more» she founded the world's first shelter for battered women in 1971. To her surprise, she discovered that most of the women in her shelter were as violent as the men they had left.

When Pizzey wrote a book revealing this sordid truth, she encountered a firestorm of protest. "Abusive telephone calls to my home, death threats, and bomb scares, became a way of living for me and for my family. Finally, the bomb squad asked me to have all my mail delivered to their head quarters," she would later reveal.

According a recent report, the domestic violence industry continues to engage in information control tactics, spewing a dizzying series of half-truths, white lies, and outright prevarications. The report, "Fifty Domestic Violence Myths," is published by RADAR, Respecting Accuracy in Domestic Abuse Reporting: Carey Roberts July 1, 2009

  • There you go again....believing everything you read!...and an AMERICAN study, no less!...no wonder you are an easy mark for Vale!

This article suggests only that people concider what their "attitudes & actions are" concerning violence. The work done by these fine people is to be commended, and more of us should have like values and standards.

  • Okay,
    Read these facts:

    http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/RADARreport-50-DV-Myths.pdf

  • I'll bite, MAT...what is the negative side of THIS issue?...give us the FACTS as always, and show everyone how these folks are trying to tug at our heart-strings.

  • Domestic Violence and Women's Violence coalitions. A multi billion dollar industry, reliant on propaganda and an influx of taxpayer funds is now advertising on city buses.
    Great.
