Greater Sudbury’s Community Action Networks (CANS) bring people together to build a healthy community.
CANS arose from a recommendation from the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Involvement and Volunteerism in June 2001. By 2004 a number had been created in outlying areas such as Onaping where there was a lot of dissatisfaction after the community lost its own council because of the amalgamation of the former cities and towns into one unified city.
Community Action Networks were highlighted in January 2007 by the publishing of the Constellation City Report, chaired by Floyd Laughren.
CANS projects have included a citizen patrol program with police support, clean-up initiatives, efforts to beautify neighbourhoods by planting flower boxes, and organizing special events.
