Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore's film, Capitalism: A Love Story, will be presented in Sudbury Sept. 19 at 5 p.m.

The film is being shown here in support of striking members of Steelworkers Local 6500. The screening will take place at the Silver City Theatre.

Moore “has been moved by the importance of the struggle being waged by workers at Vale Inco ,” stated a press release from Local 6500.

“We are proud and thankful to Michael Moore for providing such meaningful support for our members here in Sudbury,” said Leo Gerard, international president of the United Steelworkers, in the press release. “Throughout his career, Michael has consistently called for social justice and fair treatment for working people.”

This special screening has been set up at Moore’s initiative.

At Sudbury’s special private screening for the strikers, there will also be a number of foreign dignitaries attending, who will be in Sudbury to attend the International and Community Rally earlier that day at the Sudbury Arena. The dignitaries will include labour leaders who represent more than 186 million workers in countries around the world.

“What a great weekend in Sudbury this is. We have our wonderful Sudbury community coming out to a rally to show us support. We have international leaders coming to show us that communities around the world support Sudbury. And, now we see that famous people who care about justice will lend their support,” said John Fera, president of Local 6500.

  • "This special screening has been set up at Moore’s initiative" What did it cost to go see this film? Where any of the proceeds donated? Ha Ha !!!

  • OH NO NO NO - THE MOVIE WAS NOT FOR "ALL" THE STRIKERS - ONLY 230 HAND PICKED AND VISITING LABOUR LEADERS WERE ABLE TO ATTEND THE VIEWING - NICE GESTURE BY MICHAEL MOORE BUT OUR UNION HEADS ONCE AGAIN REAPED THE REWARDS -

  • Your right 'country boy'.......never seen so much 'bashing' in my life. Its one thing to have your opinion on something, but to continually denigrate and wish bad luck on someone really demonstrates a person's character.

Having said that, dont get too upset. Its the same little gang of 'whiners',who do all the complaining.......and i DONT think any of them are candidates for the Mensa institute anyway, lol

  • Absolutely Amazing, Thank you Michael Moore, and all those dignitaries, and the community who care about Sudbury's workers. This rally, and special screening of Capitalism for strikers will mark the stand of solidarity forever.

I am not an Inco employee, but my parents and relatives, and their friends either currently work there, or did work their and are now retired. The steelworkers union and Mine Mill union brought decent wages and safe working conditions to the miners in Sudbury.

Vale, is messing with the wrong people here, when they try to take away what has been fought for long and hard by sudbury men and women's blood, sweat, and tears.

Vale must realize that they cannot come here, take our minerals, and beat up our workers out of greed. They make plenty of money without sifting off the few meagre dollars and benefits that average empolyees make.

  • Moore's "work" is nothing more than comedy, spewing socialist rhetoric.

  • Wrong again MAT. Moore does not produce propaganda. His website has a legal war room where all of the FACTS discussed in his films are backed up with the sources. If his movies were all lies like you and your fellow ultra-conservative wind bags claim....why hasn't he been sued?
Moore does not need to have intricate knowledge of the strike to see it at face value: A multinational conglomeration who has enjoyed record profits, trying to force concessions on it's workforce and using the phony excuse of a world economic recession that doesn't actually effect their bottom line.
Shouldn't you be helping a child predator find exuses as to why he has lewd photographs of minors on his hard drive somewhere?

  • Hail Hit......

  • A free screening of a socialist film to a captive audience of socialists.
    Brilliant marketing.
How many of the limited group will then tell how much Moore "cares" and have their pals run out and pay to see this and other Moore's twisted propaganda?
    Yup, and Moore gets rich....just.....like....a..capitalist.

  • Hardly bushing country boy.
All this appears to be is a photo-op. Does Moore even know the entirety of the issue at hand, or just the unions side?

You boys are going to start getting desperate soon, what with the truck blocking and all. Don't do something you'll regret and let this get violent. Demand your leaders get their butts to the bargaining table. You can't get what you want (or at least try to) if you're not there.

  • Valley boy
You have the right not to support 6500, but give it up. No support fine, always bashing, get a life!

  • Another one who supports the strike but not the community. Mickey and Leo Greard scratch each other's back all the time... he's just returning a favour, after all, big Leo is great at promotting his films. Just another photo-op for the union boys... make it look like there's lots of support. They're importing their supporters from Brazil for God's sake.

  • Hi Cellardoor,
According to the press release, the special showing of Mr. Moore's documentary is for Steelworkers and various dignitaries. Mr. Moore is not scheduled to be in attendance.

  • That's why Mike is the man!
A generous gift to our local 6500 & a show of support that is much appreciated I'm sure.

  • It really is nice to see this kind of support for both the strikers and their, kids.Remember, even if you disagree with the strike, that a huge impact is being felt by all Sudburians.A lot of innocent kids will have a bleak Christmas, many of them not the strikers children. The pressure of the media must continue in both Canada and overseas to get the two sides back to the Bargaining table,if only for the sake of the innocent children.

  • soo...is this only for the strikers or is it an open event? And is Michael Moore actually going to be there as well? This is awesome!

  • Right on Mr. Moore is nice to see people stand up for the little guy for a change. The workers everywhere are the people that make this world run. It's time people stand up and be counted! Without the guys on the bottom there would be no top!
