The streets of downtown Sudbury were full of marching women during the evening of Sept. 17.

They protested against sexual assault and other forms of violence against women during the annual Take Back The Night march and rally organized by the Sudbury Sexual Assault Crisis Centre.

The march occurred after a series of speakers spoke at a rally at Tom Davies Square at 6 p.m. Five of the speakers were survivors of sexual assaults themselves. There were also entertainers, including a belly dancer and an acoustic duo, Naked Soul.

“We had about 200 people at the rally inside, and about 150 in the march itself. It was the best Take Back The Night march ever held in Sudbury in 31 years,” said Morag Anderson, director of the Sudbury Sexual Assault Crisis Centre.

“The goal of Take Back The Night is to empower women and raise awareness about sexual violence and violence against women,” said Anderson.

“I think this year we had such a good turnout because women feel more comfortable taking a a stand. It was just a fabulous show of support for our cause.”
