Company 'disappointed' with vote results

By: Heidi Ulrichsen - Sudbury Northern Life Staff

UPDATED — March 12, 1:10 p.m.

Steelworkers Local 6500 president John Fera said he's happy his members supported the recommendation of the bargaining committee, and voted 88.7 per cent in favour of rejecting a contract proposal from Vale Inco March 11.

At the same time, he said he's not happy that union members are still on strike.

“It's a tough time, it's been a tough eight months on our families, and it's been a tough eight months on our community,” he said. “Our members sent a pretty strong message yesterday, I think, that all we've ever wanted was a fair deal, and the struggle will continue until the company's willing to offer that.”

The proposal was offered by Vale Inco March 7 after more than a week of mediated talks between the union and company.

Fera said Local 6500 currently has about 2,850 members, down from 3,100 when the strike started in July 2009, mostly because so many have taken their pensions.

Of those members, 2,371 cast ballots at two membership meetings held at the Caruso Club March 11, with 2,105 voting to reject the contract, and 266 voting to accept it. Most of those who didn't show up to vote are currently working outside of Sudbury, he said.

One hundred fifteen members of Steelworkers Local 6200 in Port Colborne, who negotiate along with Local 6500 members, are due to vote on the contract today (March 12).

As members left the meeting, which was closed to the public, they brought their contracts to a fire barrel set up in the Caruso Club parking lot, and threw them in.

“I guess we continue to hope that we get back to the negotiating table, just like we had done before. We're more than willing to sit down and try to get closer, so we can get a settlement,” Fera said.

“The ball is kind of in the company's court. Their last offer just didn't do it. If they're serious about negotiating and serious about resolving the strike, all they've got to do is call. We'd be happy to sit down and do it again.”

Vale Inco spokesperson Steve Ball said the company is disappointed but not surprised that Local 6500 members rejected the contract proposal.

“The Steelworkers leadership encouraged their membership to vote no and prolong a strike that's gone on far too long already,” he said. “Their current position continues to offer little hope that the strike will be settled any time soon.”
Ball said Vale Inco has “been open to a path forward” from the beginning of the strike, and was hopeful during the latest round of negotiations that the labour dispute would be resolved.

But he said there is “little hope of a settlement” until the needs of the Steelworkers become more closely aligned to the needs of the company.

He said Vale Inco will continue with its plans to move to full production using non-striking employees and replacement workers.

“We can't allow the business to sit idle, because we have customers we have to supply and other employees that need to work.”

Fera said he told workers attending the meetings that the key issues that put the union on strike in July 2009 still hadn't been properly dealt with in the latest round of negotiations, although some progress was made.

He said some progress has been made on the pension issue.

The two-tier pension system still exists in the latest contract, but the union negotiated an increase to the existing defined benefit pension plan, and improvements to the proposed defined contribution pension plan, including a long-term disability plan that pays the same amount as the defined benefit plan.

The nickel price bonus trigger was amended to $3.50 a pound, instead of $5 a pound, which was the number included in the original contract proposal last year.

Fera said he is especially concerned about the company's plans for bringing the strikers back to work after the labour dispute ends. He said Vale Inco has not shared those plans with the union.

“We've asked them what their ramp-up program is, and they won't tell us,” he said.

“We've asked them how many people will be going back, and they won't tell us. We've asked them if there's going to be layoffs, and they won't tell us. That's a hell of a return-to-work program when we don't know who will be returning to work.”

Raymond Marier, who normally works as a heavy equipment technician at North Mine, told Northern Life before the evening meeting March 11 that he would be voting against the contract.

“It's a bit of a downfall for all of us, really," he said. "The company presented it to the union. The union had no choice but to give it to us. It puts us and the union in a predicament.”

“I can't see anybody wanting the contract. However, there are some desperate people. It's a long time to go without money. But we've got to protect our future and our past. Everybody that's ever worked for this company has got to get a little piece of the pie, whether you're retired or just starting out.”

  • ..NO vote.
Want someone to blame for the impending collapse of your union? Look no further than your front door. When your betrothed comes in from his 2 hour picket log signing and his part time job at Costco.
Face it. Your union is still fibbing to you. Easter is a celebration of death and resurrection.
6500 the first act, Vale the second half.

  • Well wifey, the 6500 members were openly bragging about how they were making $80k/year plus another $25k for just showing up. They once loved the company. As long as things went their way.
There are constant, common stories from your proud, hard working union friends about napping on the job. Doing the least amount of work. Then sitting in the dry, lunchroom, or workshop. Sleeping. All the while protected by the union and it's mediocre work ethic. Laughing how easy things once were. - Meanwhile the costs for Vale increased.

That very mindset, sense of entitlement is what your striking for now. 6500 is union breaking itself. Kamikaze style.
Vale isn't paying much at all. They aren't paying the USW to work. They are paying a smaller number of contractors a fair wage to conduct your former hubby's work. Think about the tens of millions they lost in the last 1/4 with the former union on the job. Now they are streamlined, and have eager, qualified workers there.
$5000/week to work? Suuuuuuuure. More union propaganda. Just like the 1000's of Brazilians hiding in the hotels. Remember that BS scare tactic?
Hey, remember the laughter when the union said the smelter was frozen? They'd never start it....oh...good times.
How about the $50,000 bargaining in bad faith award some schmucks are spreading?
The strike would be over by fall. Vale "On their knees". Yeah! Solidarity for ever.
If Vale wanted to break the union, they why would they twice offer contracts? With added incentives in the last one. $20,000 retirement bonus? Increases in pensions for current workers putting them at $40k/year...etc...etc.
If Inco was out to smash your little local, they would have starved them out 8 months ago. Instead they chose to talk. Bargain. Show the economics. Warn of production start up. Even held off until after Christmas. Held off to only 50% so not to totally close the door. - Now? It's full steam ahead. With the blessing of a "No&qu

  • Just curious,noofie........you have been on the Vale bandwagon, taking their side on how there is a recession and the company has to be fiscally responsible. You accuse the workers of being lazy and overpaid........and yet,it common knowledge that the scabs are out there bragging they are making $5000 a week.Im sure you have a 'rational' explanation for that.

P.S. Im POSITIVE you WONT admit that Vale is out at all cost to break the union and will pay any amount to do it

  • Here he is .Our spineless liberal M.P. Mr.Rick Bartolucci for a photo opt were vote are easy and were they count...at the Hospital. You dont' see him backing up the thousands of workers that have been on strike for eight or the other thousands that have backed him over the years.
He decides its better to sit on the fence to protect his daughter who is a Vale employee in the HR dept...with hubby editor at MCTV controlling that part of it..
In fact she is suppose to be Steve Ball but is on a extended paid maternaty leave so she does not have to face the media and make Daddy look bad.
This is how things are done in Brazil you buy the polaticians in this case Bart.
How he can face us is beyond me no morals no gratitude no of anything. But I guess that what makes a spineless politician tic.

  • Well housewife, it comes down to who you're going to believe and how much longer you're prepared to continue to believe the USW of A.
One thing that you should believe from the company is that they're going to proceed to full production and that could be REALLY bad news for you. If the company signs contracts with 3rd party companies to open Coleman and Creighton as they're implying, these will be long term (+1 year) contracts and these mines may never be staffed by Vale Inco again.
If this happens, do you think its going to hurt the usw of a, Leo Gerard, Fraser or Fera? They'll still be drawing the big bucks from Pittsburgh.
Good luck housewife. The meeting tonite may be informative but it may just be another USW dog & pony show with no opportunity for discussion or dissenting opinions.

  • Oh,sure,'Don S'.........we are ALL going to believe Vale's 'gospel'.Sort of reminds me of Bill Clinton's.......'I never had sexual relations with that woman'

Read it and weep boys...Your sad excuse for a union has screwed you royally. Read it from the source not from their lying lips.

  • Damn it,'bigriver'.........'noofie' finally figured it out.The Steelworkers ARE corrupt.Their only agenda is to completely ruin the lives of ALL their members.

Just our luck........that 'noofie' would catch Fera eating at a restaurant.Well, the jig is up.My hubby is going to start contacting his fellow workers, and begin the decertification process of the union.

Just think, that darn Fera has been fooling us all along.Thirty years in the mines,a former municipal politician,a family man............and all along,he has been tricking us by going to a restaurant on occasions.

Just when you think you know someone.Oh,well, from now on.........im going to believe EVERYTHING 'Noofie' tells me.........NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • bigriver
We knew we wouldn't find him at the foodbanks and from his appearance, we knew he wasn't missing any meals and we knew wherever he ate, it would be a licenced establishment so we installed our cameras accordingly.

He certainly is a sensitive leader bigriver.

  • Well Townie, Vale has got you stalking Fera now, do they? Good to know, we can use that at the OLRB hearing.

  • well housewife.......what can I say?
He certainly seemed to be enjoying himself.
When is the last time the average Local 6500 member enjoyed himself like that?
Kinda reminds me of Orwells Animal Farm......in fact, he kinda looked like one of the animal characters who rose to the ruling class there.
check it out.......some .... are more equal

  • And your point is,noofie??????????Is Fera not suppose to eat at a restaurant? Does Steve Ball,John Polessel,Tito.........not go to restaurants?

Are the 3000 strikers not allowed to go to restaurants?

Isnt ironic, how you have accused some of strikers as 'grasping at straws'..........and you come up with something like this??????????

  • Hey housewife
Were you around last month or in fla when I reported I'd seen Fera at the Fishbowl on LaSalle eating a big lobster/
Well tonite I saw him at the Idyllwyld Golf & Country enjoying a delicious entry with good wine.

At least this time he was being a bit more discrete than at the Fishbowl.

If I was a member of Local 6500 I would be asking him about it and how he can afford it.......but thats me. Give him credit.....he eats at the same places I do.

  • Noofie, you must be from Sin John's. There no udder way to explain your elitist attitude. It sounds like the old merchants who kept hard working families under their thumbs for generations. Townie.

  • Next contract the company may NEED your contributions. This contract they really didn't care if you signed or not.
Go to the Kitco website and pull up the charts for 1 year.
(A responsible union would have had this info in a Power Point Presentation on a big screen at Garson Arena for you)
It would have been obvious that it was NOT an opportune time to strike. (Hubby should have known these conditions before you let him out of the house to vote housewife)
Next contract there may be a world wide shortage of nickel and the economy is booming......THAT'S when you strike

  • Why is it a strike issue,noofie?........Because of the precedent it is setting. This contract the pension........next contract the drug plan, next one, vision care, next one......................

    Even YOU.........can see that

  • Unions are the police of labour laws, call the OPP and ask them to investigate a violation of The Labour Relations Act and you will hear tumbleweeds blowing in the wind. As for mining not being dangerous since 1900, have you forgotten about Westray? That was 1992 and 26 miners were killed(murdered) by their company's managers. It then took over ten years, through the hard work of unions and the NDP, to pass a law ciminalizing industrial negligence causing a critical injury or death. Bikerdude, the one irrelevant is you spreading false hope.

  • Striking is an outdated, irrelevant, fear mongering practice kept alive by fat, non-working union officials that need to justify their existence. This is no longer 1900 where the working conditions were downright deadly and the working man had no say.more» Labour laws have come a long way to keep the working conditions safe and jobs relatively secure--if you do your job. Miners are now mostly university/college grads who know how to work safely and efficiently. The Jimmy Hoffa style union crap no longer has a place in our society. The union is playing into the company's hands by acting like a bunch of schoolyard bullies. The workers will NEVER get back what they have lost, they are pawns of the union and only serve to perpetuate the circle of Jimmy Hoffa crap that keeps the Union dues flowing into the pockets of the USW. This keeps the fat cats happy while the working guys lose their houses, families and every dollar they have saved. Some workers may never be ale to retire completely because of the strike. There is no winning by a union worker in a strike--only degrees of loss. Is losing everything worth an outdated point of view? I just don't think so at

  • bigriver--who slahes tires when they protest--strikers do, who spreads tacks on the road near Day construction--strikers do, who beats people up on Southview drive--strikers do, who bullies the public into putting support signs in their store windows, then goes and spends $30,000 for toys for their strikers kids in Southern Ontario--6500 does. Who fires strikers for behaving like thugs--Vale does. Take some ownership for your own bad behaviour!

  • The union wants a signing bonus to cover their lost time--you vote to go on strike, and you expect to be compensated for that decision??? OOOOOOKKKKAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!

  • housewife
your analysis of the pension is correct. Kinda makes you wonder why it was a strike issue with your hubby and his brudders doesn't it?

DB pensions are history. The USW of A are signing contracts with DC pensions all over North America. Only Local 6500 saw it as a strike issue....and as you said, with the anticipated layoffs and recalls, its an issue thats years down the road..but you've lost 8 months of Vale Inco wages over it.

  • Sometimes i just dont understand the nonsense coming from the pro-Vale supporters.

Lets see if i inderstand this correctly.Vale is a multi billion dollar operation. However, they CANNOT continue to compete if they keep funding the pension plan as it is now........for new employees.

But,wait a minute.According to their own comments, they will be LAYING off people, and NOT hiring anyone. That means their extra contribution to the pension plan will be ZERO.

Huh??????......Please oh 'mighty' noofie.........explain this one

  • I’m getting a bit exasperated with this foreign ownership garbage.
Show me a time when INCO (International Nickel) was even 50% “owned” by Canadian interests?
During much of its history and although Canadian based, 47% of its equity was U.S. based with another 31% held in the U.K. (From the British based Mond Nickel Company). That’s correct 78% for those who don’t have enough fingers and toes to cypher that high. AND there were positions held in other foreign countries as well.
The closest it might have ever come close to 50% was when the Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan or the Caisse de depot et placements du Quebec held minority positions.
Don’t believe me. Go check the archives of that foreign union based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA you so proudly uphold as a bastion of Canadianism.
    Foreign ownership indeed!
Now aren’t you pleased that I as a Canadian bought a few shares of VALE so those money grubbing foreigners don’t own it all.

  • Who slaps lawsuits on the people with whom they're about to negotiate? Vale does. Who fires people on strike for swearing? Vale does. Who gives Brazil a bad name in Labour Relations? Vale does, that's who. I hope Vale doesn't sue me for defamation because I expressed an opinion. I hear they do that too.

  • The strong message is you are going to be on strike for a long long time. Sending a message is what caused the problem last year.

  • what's your point camoman?

Here's one for you.......nickel is a very dangerous carcinogen. Did you know that?
No one is telling you that are they?
Ask the people who live downwind from the PC Refinery about their law suits.
Did you think mining nickel was good for you?

  • vale
Since they have come to Canada, they have put out 3 out of the 4 Canadian operations…they are now in a legal law suit in NFLD. Because they tried to play dirty pool and got caught. Vale basically and in a nutshell sold their nickel concentrate to themselves at a lower price to reduce the amount of royalties it must pay, and now they are being SUED for 29 million dollars U.S.. ...They got caught shipping STRUCK ORE to Manitoba...Trailers were loaded with Voisey's Bay ore that was stored at Clarabelle. The USW took down trailer numbers and Lo and behold those trailers showed up at Thompson in the dead of night...The Manitoba Ministry of Labour was given the report and the practice was SHUT DOWN... vale is building a hydrometallurgical processing plant on the south side of Long Harbour, Placentia Bay. The company proposes to deposit toxic slurry wastes, of 375,000 tonnes per year, in Sandy Pond, a nearby lake. All life would be extinguished in the lake. Two adjacent small lakes would also be affected. This would be cheaper for the company ($62 million) than building a tailings impoundment ($490 million).Besides depositing effluent into Sandy Pond, the plant would emit over 500,000 kilograms of chemicals including lead, sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid into the air every year, according to Vale Inco’s environmental impact statement. But, the worst move of all is the company’s plan to build a 6-kilometre pipeline running out into Placentia Bay to dispose of 1.6 billion gallons of additional effluent a year, depositing it right in the heart of the codfish spawning grounds.
So is vale Canada’s benefactor or Canada’s antagonist.
I DON’T THINK WE HAVE HEARD THE LAST OF THIS vale IN THE CANADIAN NEWS …..

  • Get something straight here you Local 6500 members & supporters: you did not work EVER for Vale. Your worked for a while for CVRD and now you work for Vale Inco. If you're going to battle THIS foreign corporation because that OTHER foreign corporation (USW of A) told you to, know who you're fighting.
housewife's hubby.......I don't hate Leo Gerard. I just have no respect for someone who did what he is doing to you guys and Sudbury for his own personal agenda.
I sympathized with you guys until this 2nd vote......you've heard the saying......Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

  • Um.. why is it everyone is so worried about Vale because it is foreign company.. the last time I checked.. USW was an AMERICAN union.. which is based out of Pittsburgh, PA.. incase you didn't know that makes them FOREIGN too.. but i guess no one sees that side of the coin..

  • @sean10:These huge foreign takeovers so far has not benefited Canada except in the Short term gain. But this might turn out to be Canada's Long term Pain...

  • To kissmya55,
if u are so capable, find a job somewhere else and stop begging at picket line. Do not forget that without foreign investment, you will be a beggar now. Pls do not talk like a national hero and trying to make this a national issue. Canadians are not stupid, maybe some miners are..

  • Lots of debate here, the reality is vale is holding all the cards and the union has no cards to play...the union is playing 89% rejection but they never mentioned how many people did not show up to vote, is about 600 people.

The point is, this union will not win and the miners will lose everything by begging at the picket line. Life will move on, Vale will move on, not these workers.

Sudbury used to depend on Inco and any strike by 6500 will paralyze the city, not anymore..good luck in your so called hero strike. The banks will lose their patience to ask for mortgage payment soon. Do not expect binding arbitration in a private company. Be smart, 6500 is just a small union that will be decertified and disappear forever.

  • I'm a 3rd generation miner in Sudbury and all I have to say is that I'd rather be homeless than give into this foreign owned company who is trying to rape our natural resources and take away our Canadian way of living. Sudbury was built on mining...if it wasn't for that giant meteor hitting Sudbury than then we probably wouldn't even be here discussing this. People should be standing behind the workers who are on strike because if it wasn't for them then Sudbury wouldn't have ever prospered the way it has. Every school, every bank, every corner store, every bar, etc. etc. probably wouldn't even be here if the mines weren't ever created. Now some foreign company wants to take money out of Sudbury workers' pockets and people seem to think that this is alright??? Give your heads a shake.

  • Wow really, that's what they sent Dog S.? Was their spelling that horrible in the letter also?

  • From 'housewife' hubby. There is NO greed on our part.We just asked to keep the STATUS QUO.......absolutely NO increases.Stop blaming the recession.........the 'recession' is basically OVER.

Vale simply wants to control their workers here........like they do in every other part of the world. We did not fight a hundred years.........to all of a sudden go backwards.

Your hatred of Gerard,'noofie',is superceeding everything else.........and you basically have 'tunnel vision'.........the workers MUST lose........just so you can satisfy your your desire to have Leo 'defeated'

Striking was a MAJOR decision........and NOT taken lightly.A lot of sacrifices have been made.Perhaps,if YOU make a 'major' decision.....having someone belittle you for EIGHT months........may just get annoying after awhile.

    GET A LIFE

  • Here is something quite amusing: Here is a small excerpt from the "Big Kahuna" roger a. when he was talking to the shareholders about acquiring Canada's INCO: Quote" Let's talk a little bit about Inco, the overview of Inco. Inco is a world leader in nickel. It's the world's second-largest nickel producer. It has the largest nickel reserve base, one of the world's lowest cost producers. It also has a very attractive growth pipeline of products, a global leader in nickel technology with a
powerful brand name and premium products and more than that, expertise, people. And a very senior management team, a very qualified staff that we in this day, it's a very valuable asset and we believe that we have a lot to learn from them and we'll benefit from the exchange of experience of their workforce. They will help us a lot to developing our ambitious portfolio of non-ferrous projects. Inco has large-scale, long-life and low-cost nickel assets, as you can see on slide 17."
Now that Canada's INCO is now vale, Don't you think it's quite humorous how vales spiel has changed.....

  • Here is the message that was sent to Vale. Even though you have offered us a fair deal we want more more more and we want to make all you business decisions. We the union want to control you the company. Nice message boys .... You will regret this vote for the rest of your lives.

  • So Phillip, you don't think it's relevant that mining companies treated their workers like chattel? You can't see that's companies want to turn back the clock? Once the clock starts going back, who determines where it stops?

  • Vale is STILL in a bitter labour dispute in 3 out of the 4 Canadian operations…Sudbury’s operation loses HUGE money when it operates at partial production, Sudbury’s bylaw doesn’t allow vale to put in bunkhouses….. They must put up their outside hired help in hotel rooms, At a great cost to vale … Thompson Manitoba needs 30% feed from Ontario and Voisey’s Bay so they can operate at 100%.... Manitoba has a struck ore law, so vale can not legally take ore from Sudbury or Voisey’s bay…… They must buy it from abroad… at current price it is probably quite expensive.. But Canadian ore is still in the ground....vale will continue to LOSE money until this labour dispute is resolved....
    In Canada that is…

How long can vale keep LOSING millions every day, before the share holders start wondering and asking why.....

  • bigriv, so now your group is so lost that you're now striking for the deaths of miners from 2 decades ago in a province 2000+ kms away? In a totally unrelated incident that isn't even relevant to your strike.
That is beyond insulting. No wonder Sudburians have long ago turned their backs on 6500.

Wifey, the position your union has put you in has fatally damaged it and the members. There is room in the labour movement for honourable strikes. There is also a tipping point where you have to balance rhetoric over truth. Blind following and sacrifice against loyalty at all costs versus civic disgust and financial suicide.

Using the mentality that your strife is somehow worthy of becomong a martyr for an ideal is just crazy. Past battles were for a reason. This one is different. For greed and egos down at the hall. All during a recession. For a company that your union has made lose millions in it's division. No rocket appliances there Ricky.

Face the reality. Inco Sudbury is going on now without you. Rhetoric and egos hasn't worked. The strike has been a total logistical failure. In 90 days you'll be on the eve of month 12. One year without work. Without hope. Without community support. The general still calling the shots from his tower in Pittsburgh USA. Just who are the weaklings in this epic battle? Certainly not Vale and not the brass in the USWA.
Look in the mirror. Be honest now. You know that the point of no return has long passed. Instead of accepting blame, its far easier to cling to the sinking liferaft of the Steelworkers. It's a great coping mechanisim to be comforted that the union is somehow doing the right thing Solidarity ...for.....ever........?

  • housewife & hubby
This strike is not like the other Mine Mill - USW of A vs Inco. In those strikes and negotiations, the Union had a strong hand because Sudbury was Inco's big cash machine and Inco controlled the nickel market.

The reason for THIS strike is not unlike the reasoning which resulted in "nickel bonus" in the first place. The company cannot afford to agree to the union demands to:
a/ pay what the union is demanding in terms of $$$ since Sudbury NL Vale Inco is not a very big player in nickel production any more.
b/ allow Leo Gerard a victory which he will parade to all other Vale global operations which could very well result in huge labour cost increases.

As I've said a number of times before, the primary issue of this strike is Leo Gerard vs Vale. Leo is using Local 6500 as his sharp point because he knew they would follow him because of his personal ties to Sudbury and Inco.
No other Local would have tolerated this strike for such vague issues..vague in that its not about safety or health or hourly wages. I know PC and NL followed Sudbury but they wouldn't have gone out on their own. (Don't get on the nickel bonus...its a BONUS. The USW accepted an adjusted formula at Local 2020 so its not THE issue.)

  • Of course we lost 3/4 of a year. But,then,ANY striker at ANY company loses the amount of time he is off.No 'rocket scientist'material there,PMS.

Do you know that someone who started at Inco at 18 years of age,can retire at 48,with $3400 a month,PLUS benefits? How many people outside the mining industry can say that?Do you think the company gave the workers that out of the goodness of their heart? Of course not.Strikes similar to this one.......were fought to gain that.

People like us have fought many battles in our lifetime to gain what we have, and we suffered many hardships along the way.We DONT need any 'weaklings'on the sidelines telling us what to do

  • Phillip Morris, if you're gonna talk about mining history in Canada, then let's talk about all the mining history. For example, 26 miners killed in Westray, Nova Scotia in 1992 by negligence and nobody ever being charged. Or how about the miners' strike in Buchan's in 1941. They went on strike just for the privilege to allow their families to live in the town. At the time, managers families were allowed to live there, the mine owners owned all the homes, stores, and they had been given a 20 year tax holiday by the government. Are these the good old days that we want to go back to?

  • The major flaw in the latest theory that Vale is trying to "break the union" is laughable at best.
If Vale's intentions were to break the union, they wouldn't be even have tabled an offer. (Twice)

If 6500 would have accepted the last, fair, offer, then what? Vale would have the union back at work. The same workforce with increases in pay and benefits. The only detraction being the changed pension for new hires. The very new hires that the union says won't be hired because of that leaked layoff plan by Vale. - Please inform us wifey how your betrothed is supposed to be striking to support ghost workers that aren't in the picture?
    Hire then cut the workforce?
The union is sucking and blowing at the same time. More false information and deflection.

Remember wifey, 90% of those that cast ballots chose "No". 90% of the total union did not vote that way. Big difference indeed.
Yes, Elliot Lake lost 2 weeks for a pair of boots. You've lost 3/4 of a year. And no end in sight. No siging bonus, no false moral vitory will ever recover what you've invested/lost in this Kamikaze labour action.
Bottom line is that the only people responsible for the breaking of the union are the workers. You continue to choose not to work. All the suffering is self inflicted. Your jobs are still there. (Not for much longer)

  • Noofie, this is a message from my hubby.........Obviously you have a certain amount of knowledge about mining. Therefore, you should know, this is NOT about an extra 25 cents an hour.Is is a blatant attempt to break the union and 'put us in line' with all their other employees across the world. You know damn well the contract at Xstrate is NOT the same offered at Vale.If it was............it would have been signed in a heartbeat.

P.S. So you 'lost' 2 weeks at Elliot Lake.Big Deal......get over it and get on with your life.

P.S.S.......'Union radicals" PM?????? NINETY percent turned the offer down.Give your head a shake

  • Another sobering example from Mr.noofie. - Toss in the CIBC and Goldcorp examples as well.
The main problem here is the lemming mindset accepted by the union radicals and the housewife types.
Never question. Accept the hype and propaganda.
When anybody dares to think for themselves, analyzing ALL the facts they are insulted and branded as Vale supporters.

Here we are, 8 months and no end in sight. Just weigh the massive losses by the individual striker to what gains they could salvage in the bleak future. Impossible to recover. Even worse is the now near certain future that Vale will go on without them for good.
The union BS had promised tens of thousands of supporters in the streets. Global solidarity with Steelworkers shutting down Vale everywhere! They were confident no replacement workers would cross. That production couldn't go on. The strike would be maybe 3 months with the collapse of Vale and the stockpiles gone. -- In just over 90 days you'll be approaching the 1 year anniversary of the suicide pact known as the 2009 strike vote.
All of the hollow union promises were wrong. Facts have given way to fuzzy hype and propaganda. Disinformation and intimidation. Lost jobs, arrests and deeper debts by the day.
6500's last chance was days ago. Summer 2010 will be remembered as the year of the replacements and deep discounts in the classifieds.
Loyalty is honorable. Blind loyalty is stupid.

  • Leo Gerard is a strike loving, brainwashing, corrupt, intimidation loving, borderline mafia type waste of skin.

  • Housewife
I was in Elliot Lake when Leo Gerard and the Big Steel convinced us to stay on strike after we received the sweetest offer a company ever made to their employees.
We stayed out on the lines for 2 weeks in '79 when miners were making $75,000/yr in Elliot Lake. We had hundreds of miners and workers from Sudbury working there. They were escaping the big strike here under Dave Patterson.
Do you know what "Big Steel" got us for those 2 additional weeks?
Boots!!!!!!!!!!1 pair per year free and any boots after that at 50% of the cost that Denison told us.
You say you and your hubby's family have been in mining for 100 years and you don't know about this? and you don't wonder why Xstrata accepted pretty much the same offer Local 6500 turned down???
You must be a natural blonde housewife.......and your hubby too.

  • THIS IS WHAT IM SAYING NOOFIE.........the strike is between the workers and families against vale......and while everyone is entitled to their opinion ,dont you think TWO thousand emails berating the union in the past eight months is ENOUGH.We GET IT........you hate Gerard and the union, but only a person with a MENTAL problem would keep up this INCESSANT daily attack

  • @housewife
what are you saying? That everything is rosey and wonderful in your world?
Unless your hubby has 15+ years in or has friends in the contracting business or Vale Inco NUS, even IF the union folds up and settles, he will not likely have a job at Vale Inco. Local 6500 finally twigged to that one.

Maybe you have the grit to answer this question housewife.
What happened to the nickel matte shipments to Clydach that the "Big Steal" was going to block at the docks?

  • Look, noofie, you have spent EIGHT months predicting doom and gloom for the strikers.May i suggest you keep your 'predictions'for the results of the UFC fights......which,according to your OWN emails.......you are far more knowledgeble in

  • The rest of the article:
work is being done, guess where? The USA there’s
BUY AMERICAN again. They can cry about not getting a fair trial all they want and they can tie up the case in litigation for as long as they want, this was still a calculated plan and US Steel are bully’s world wide . They weren’t harmed…. they planned it ….
And who gets to pay for this debacle..... The TAX PAYERS....

Maybe vale is walking a fine line here....

  • @ northside:Do a little research CHUM....U.S Steel is in court right now, they are being sued by the Canadian Government for "FOUL PLAY"....
    U.S. Steel
In 2005 two years before US Steel’s buying of the Canadian Stelco they were lobbying Congress for
''BUY AMERICAN'' interesting because the so called need for this didn’t arise until the American made Global crisis of 2008 . That is interesting in itself since this is a huge conglomerate that does not run their vast Steelmaking enterprise on a day to day basis but on long term plans and long term Company goals.
There are a variety of ''Foreign ''owners that run the Canadian Steel Industry today and throughout the Global Crisis not one of them found it necessary to totally shut down their Canadian facilities but opted for less harmful options for their workers and the Communities they are as ''THEY ''tell us when they want something PARTNERS. These other Foreign owners also thought it wise a show of ''good faith'' and important as good PARTNERS with Canada to live up to THEIR agreements with the Canadian Government .
US Steel still has Lake Erie[Nanticoke]shut down .
Now they like to explain it as a''LABOUR DISPUTE'' but what they did after making a BILLION Dollars plus last year and settling with their American workers giving them raises and huge signing bonus’s offered the CANADIAN workers the most insulting contract they could filled with concessions and demands with Pensioners taking a beating no one could vote for. AH here comes the ''BUY AMERICAN'' plan .While they are down after being offered garbage the CANADIAN orders are being produced in the GOOD OLE USA and shipped back to Canada. All the while the Stelco Hilton works COLD MILL is down because their work comes from , you got it LAKE ERIE which they have shut down due again to a garbage offer and HAMILTONS wor

  • Canadas investment act??????????.I thought this act sold you out according to the union talk, now you think it is going to protect you if Vale decides to shut it down...which way is it????

  • @Seamus & noofie :Sorry CHUMS, but if vale could run Sudbury's operation efficiently, they would have done so by now. They had over 8 months to prove it. All it got them was massive damage to the equipment and unbelievable operating costs with no profit to show for it. Sudbury's operation was not designed to run at partial production, when it does it causes major problems,as they have found out...
As for Timmins, that plant was/is a copper refinery, not a mine, not a smelter, a copper refinery...We used to have one in Sudbury, employing hundreds of Sudburians, but they tore it down, and now ship everything to Quebec and offshore...
Right now Ont. mines are running full tilt, thats why vale is having a hard time to find qualified people, that and the fact of most people will work elsewhere before they will become "SCABS"...
On a side note look what U.S.Steel did to Stelco, and the trouble they are in with the Canadian Government....
So I wonder what would happen if vale shut down a 100 plus year old company....(ORLB and Canada's investment act)
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

  • BTW Camnaan
How did the mighty unions make out with their efforts to block the nickel matte shipment(s) to Clydach refinery?

The company says they'll soon be in full production there but why should I believe them?? Right??

  • Well Camoman
Wait until those 700+ guys from Xstrata Kidd...smelter and refinery workers with no work nor prospects of it in Timmins...hit the market and fill the apartments and rooms in Sudbury, working 2 weeks on & 2 weeks off to accommodate their travelling back to Timmins. KL Gold has proven this schedule works for both sides.

This fully trained workforce will be glad to have steady jobs again. Miners are easy to come by. There are hundreds of them looking for work any day of the week but trained smelter and refinery workers are like gold...or nickel in this case.
Good luck on the line. Word of advice...buy lots of sunscreen now in the "off season". You'll be needing it on the line this summer.

  • The post doesn't stick so you'll have to go to the bottom of the chart and click on "1y" That means one year by the way.

  • "unbelievable operating costs with no profit tomore» show for it."
    Get serious camonman.
The Sudbury operations are not a make or break deal for Vale. They could shut it down tomorrow and the stock holders could care less. However, and as was pointed out earlier, they plan to be in full production here later this year with or without the union boys and girls who figure they know all the answers.
Vale is not suffering. Personally I'm up over 80% since I bought the stock early last July in anticipation there would be a strike.
It actually dipped when the futile attempt to reach an agreement started a couple weeks ago and rebounded when it became apparent the strike would continue.

I doubt if you can comprehend this chart but give it your best shot anyway.
    http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/VALE

  • It's no wonder 88.7% voted NO, it's because 50% of the so called workforce of Vale Inco are radicals and the other 38.7% are working elsewhere and could give a shit!

  • @ noofie: Sorry CHUM, but if vale could run Sudbury's operation efficiently, they would have done it by now. They had over 8 months to prove it. All it got them was massive damage to the equipment and unbelievable operating costs with no profit to show for it.
My resolve is stronger now than it was when we started this B.S. strike, and I've been holding this line for 8 months now, and I have no problem holding it for another 8 months or more....
All I know is that if I didn't have My brothers and sisters behind me , my lone voice calling "FOUL" would not be heard.

  • can't wait to cross them picket lines :)
    let the games begin

  • @camoman
I agree Vale and Vale Inco would like to have this strike behind them and they'll achieve that by moving on...moving on to contractors mining Vale Inco mines with production fluctuating to recognize the nickel market.

Why should Vale Inco present another offer? They have demonstrated to the legal system and politicians with the last offer that they are not guilty of "Bargaining in Bad Faith". They can now move on to signing contracts with "3rd Parties" to mine Coleman and Creighton, guaranteeing them a long term contract. It will no doubt take some time to get all the tees crossed and i's dotted but McEwen at Goldcorp in Red Lake pioneered this method of operating and has taken Goldcorp from a 4th class failing gold mine to the largest richest (non union, contractor operated) gold mining company in Canada.
FNX at Levack and McCreedy West proved that a motivated work force with a contractor attitude can make big $$ where Inco couldn't break even.
Your vote Thursday heralds a new day in mining in Sudbury Camoman.
Good luck with your next employer. I hope you've learned something from this experience.

  • For 8 months now vale has been trying to run an operation in Sudbury with inexperienced employees.... All it's got them is major damage to the Ont. equipment(such as a cracked floor in one of the furnaces, because of inexperience).Law suits across Canada. Caught with their pants down, trying to pull fast ones eg.(Manitoba's struck ore law).Mounting costs(millions of dollars a day to produce a contaminated product that nobody wants ).A public relations quagmire that they will feel for a long time to come, just to name a few debacles. vale is starting to be seen for who they really are,(this strike is starting to get more attention). People are beginning to realize that vale doesn't care about Canada or Canadians.

  • Warning! The following post may contain common sense. The law provides for fair bargaining between unions and employers. When invested parties don't work to ensure this process, then there is no respect for the rule of law. Vale likes to point fingers at others when it comes to not respecting the law, but somehow can't see their own reflection when they look in the mirror.

  • The first offer is usually just to test the waters out.
The first offer is ALWAYS a low ball offer.
vale figured that after 8 months off Canadians would come crawling back like whipped dogs.I don't think that vale realized that the Canadian resolve is stronger now than when this B.S. strike started.
vale wouldn't like anything better than to have this labour dispute behind them.
There will be another offer. That's how the game is played.

  • How dare they (NL) post our pictures all over their Web site. Now everyone in the community will know we are 6500. Not only that, but that we vote.

This type of public display serves no one's needs!!

  • bigriver... you should do what Sam Walton did... go out on your own if you're not happy with your job. To hear you guys talk, you're all highly educated business/law savvy experts. Why can't you geniuses get together and buy Vale outright? Then all the profits would stay in Sudbury.

  • The following program may contain scenes of stupidity and thuggery. Viewer discretion is advised!

    Act I and II of
"Yep we shoor told dem dere guys at Vale."

And now a few words from our sponsor.
"The company said it is ramping up mine production in Sudbury to maintain an uninterrupted supply of feed to the furnace and expects to be running at full, uninterrupted production in the second half of the year."

    http://www.miningweekly.com/article/vale-says-ramping-up-canadian-ops-after-proposal-to-end-strike-rejected-2010-03-13

We now return to the conclusion of our program
"Yep we shoor told dem dere guys at Vale."

  • Now let's talk about Vale. Those at the top received over 100% raise while the workers who actually produce the wealth, are asked to take concessions for the good of the company. How convenient!

  • Let's talk about the hypocrisy of big business. Let's look at WalMart. Before Sam Walton founded WalMart, he managed a department store in Little Rock, Arkansas. The store was doing so well that Sam demanded to be made a partner in the business. But the owner refused and so Sam went out on his own. Imagine, a man who thought that those responsible for the success of a business should be granted ownership. All unions ask for is a fair deal and we are villified. Too bad Sam couldn't see the irony in WalMart steadfastly refusing his own workers to get what he himself once demanded.

  • Let's get to reality now. Vale is not going to give in. They can shut down because they have an agenda and they are going to stick to it. It's time the strikers moved along with their lives and looked for jobs elsewhere. I used to be a union member and I'm not against unions.

I know of one family who still have two cell phones, a big house, a rental property and going on weekend trips and getting the money from his/her parents. These older people (retired parents) can't support a second family and it's time for them to have a reality check and stop mouching off their parents.

  • Well housewife
In a few years you can tell your grandkids that your hubby and his brudders were instrumental in making the single largest change to nickel mining in Sudbury in history. They changed Inco-Vale (Inco) from a fully integrated "mining to refining" company to a holding company processing ore from contractor operated mines with mine schedules and labour requirements adjusted quarterly to reflect the nickel market. (This is how FNX operates now for Vale Inco.)
Their actions changed their employee status from that of a well paid company employee with a generous wage & benefit package with job security equal to the best companies in Canada to employees of multi-national mining contractors with nothing but a decent wage and job security limited to a 2 week notice.
The unions achieved this same feat in Australia about 15 years ago.
This company is not going to back down housewife and neither is Leo Gerard. You know where this leaves your family.

  • They all have an agenda against the USW.Either they own a business that is suffering due to the strike,or make $10 an hour and are jealous of the strikers.====No jealousy here, but housewife the first part is bang on,business is suffering and there employees also, and the USW is looking for these same people for support and you wonder why they are not getting the support....

  • You guys really have a sense of entitlement. Here is a simple notion for the simpletons.

Local 6500 are the highest paid in the world, best pension in NA, Safest mines. One could say that there are no other people working underground anywhere in the world who are better compensated.

One would expect that with such pay, benefits , etc ... that 6500 would be the most productive miners in the world. But there not. Not even close. (-50%)

So would it not have been a smart idea on part of the union to sit down with the miners and say we need to be more efficient in fact we need to be the best miners in the world. I mean you guy talk like you are the best, you act like your the best .....why not be the best ?

Now imagine how that bargaining session would look:

Inco : That seems like a huge amount of money you guys want for this contract.

Fera: If you turn to page 3 of our proposal you will see our production is 20 % above every comparable mine. Our 6500 team has increased production 15% since our last contract, we have reduced lost time by 10% .

Inco: Perfect, you guys have played a vital role in our success, we will meet each and every demand you have.

See now that is how the miner mentality should be instead of:

Inco: That seems like a huge amount of money you guys want for this contract.

Fera : We deserve it. We are 6500. Will strike if provoked.

Inco: You guys are already the highest paid miners and you produce 50% less then a comparable mine.

Fera: WE are going to strike:

    Inco: Bye

Oh boys what kind of trouble have you gotten your self into.

Is it any wonder why they want to go to automated mining? (Please don't rebut and say that robots can't do what you do .... they can and will)

    PS @beretta96 ..big kisses

  • This will be a great year for yard sales, at least for those of us who haven't thrown our job away.

  • - There is a man from Rio
    - Who thought buying INCO would make him a Hero
    - But when the contract came to an end
    - And the UNION would not bend
    - He became a ZERO.

This is good where's the rest, you can add a part about the idiots in ottawa who let vale in. I have herd it all, union people fighting against non-union suporters and vale leaders are laughing there heads off at all of us, they will end up replacing every union man and women with someone from there own country. I have seen this happen in other parts of canada and sudbury will not be spared. So if the union haters want to keep running there mouths instead of helping the cause this city's doom is gonna get here faster.

  • My family and my hubby's family have worked in the mining industry for a hundred years. We certainly know all the hard work and sacrifices that have been made over the years to to gain what we have today.

It took real courage for the men and women to vote 89% against the insulting offer of Vale....despite knowing the financial hardship they will face.

Please dont be dissuaded by the SAME ten 'union haters' on this site........who have made a 'career 'of bashing the strikers'. They all have an agenda against the USW.Either they own a business that is suffering due to the strike,or make $10 an hour and are jealous of the strikers.

Other than that.......WHY would they care if a group of workers chose to strike against their employer?

Some of these people are bordering on 'fanaticism'.Look at 'noofie' for example. For eight months,he has probably sent THOUSANDS,NOT hundreds of emails, using many different alias's......constantly berating Gerard and Fera.......day after day, after day..........

One need not be a 'rocket scientist'.......to realize he has some sort of agenda against these two men.Despite the fact nearly NINETY percent of the strikers have forgone their wages to continue the fight.......you can be sure Noofie/Drifter/Pms.......blame it all on the union leaders

Anyway, these strikers have shown real 'backbone'.......something some of our writers on this site are sorely lacking

  • - There is a man from Rio
    - Who thought buying INCO would make him a Hero
    - But when the contract came to an end
    - And the UNION would not bend
    - He became a ZERO

  • @Kratos624
Neither the Steelworkers nor Local 6500 nor you will get what they have been fighting for.

The Steelworkers under the direction of Leo Gerard have been fighting to prove their strength to the other 92% of Vale's (not Vale Inco...that's a small part) employees and open this huge new source of funding for Pittsburgh. Vale will defeat them because they have billions of dollars in their treasury and can't afford to lose this.

Local 6500 under the direction of Leo Gerard have been fighting to prove that Leo has the charisma and power to lead a union local into a life or death battle with a multi-national corporation. Local 6500 will lose this one for Leo just like the CIBC lost it for Leo and Goldcorp in Red Lake lost it for Leo.

You, Kratos624 have been fighting because Fera told you to because Leo told him to tell you to. You're going to lose this one because you're too dumb to understand Leo Gerard doesn't give a rats ass about you or anyone else in Local 6500.

  • I cant believe the stupidity of these sheep following the mad sheep herder John Fera....Think for yourselves - Why would you vote to stay on strike after 8 months....IDIOTS. I Hope that the Sudbury Police pick up any and all law breaking strikers. There is alot of threatening happening and I hope that they bust them all . We as a city can not be bullied by this union.

  • Right noofie, just like how it was going to be such a 'close vote'. LOL You guys are funny when you get caught up in the fake lies and facts you spit. Just jealous that the Steelworkers will get what they have been fighting for, and won't accept a pitiful offer.

  • YOU GUYS ARE DONE HAHAHA........WE ALL SAW THE OFFER AND YOU GUYS REJECT IT STUPID BUNCH OF GREEDY IDIOTS NOW TRY TO FIND YOUSELF ANOTHER JOB... NOW YOU'LL BE A SCAMB TOO, TO US YOU'RE WILL TAKE OUR JOB AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO FEEL SAD FOR YOU NOTTTTT.... I ONLY FEEL BAD FOR THE 13% THAT VOTE YES......WELCOME TO REAL WORLD...LAZY BAS......

  • Here's a question for you union guys.
Lets say the company gave you everything you expected but wouldn't allow those 9 guys back.
    How would you vote then?

  • You're right Terry
We owe you an apology. We didn't recognize and appreciate the depth and breadth of your stupidity.

    You sure showed us.

Got a suggestion for you. Buy a bus and run it back and forth between Timmins and here. There are about 600 smelter and refinery workers there who will be out of work in May and by then the Vale Inco smelter have enough feed to run about 75% and they'll fire up the refinery then.

By the way, what happened to that shipment of matte that went to Clydach a few months ago? You guys got real quiet about that it seems.

  • All the bloggers here who can see the future and are making all the doom and gloom predictions are so full of yourselves that it's funny. Almost all of you predicted that the vote would be a yes vote. You were wrong so how can anyone take these predictions seriously ? If guys like noofie and phillip morris had their way they would take any contract offered even if they had to give Vale management bjs twice a week. And as far as greed who is more greedy than Vale ?

  • Scabs are members that cross the line
    not replacement workers
do your homework, read a book
no wonder you are so easily brainwashed
    sheeeeeesh

  • Replacement workers are called SCABS!!!!

  • Get your last kicks in Vale bloggers, Darth Agnelli has new plans for you! B'bye.

  • and the union dummies are holding a demo down town to generate more community support.

which part of "Dumb Shxts" don't you understand?

  • When all else fails, blame the government. If you screw up your own life - blame the government. Especially in NDP-voting Sudbury, where the NDP goofs have convinced the small-brained lemmings to blame "the government" for all that ails you.

  • Black eye for sudbury. how can we attract new investment into this city. union workers want job security produce more. inco workers a well known for low productivity rates, contracter can do better job and cheaper. if ever vale has to ell the operations here there would not be any takers because of an arrogant union culture. if this operations was run by a profit sharing consortium wages would probably be 30% lower. shoot yourself in the foot again 6500 greed will get you more misery

  • @bigriver

    - CVRD buys INCO. Silence from 6500
    - No proof to rumours that VALE violates purchase agreement
    - Vale does bargain. 6500 shoots them down
    - Re-write labour relations?? what planet are you on?
    ***you forgot these....
    - 6500 looses the battle by not accepting reasonable contract
    - Sudbury mining for Vale now done by contractors
    - Everything that was gained in the past by INCO workers is forever lost...

  • really bigriver! CVRD wants to buy Inco

wow that could be dangerous... I'm speculating that's the same company...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vale_Inco

why would a company want to buy all of their own shares... any business expert on here? I smell something bad...

  • open the flood gates Vale :)
we should have our own to parade to welcome all the miners coming from Timmins and elsewhere
    Contractors start your engines
see you on the other side suckers

  • -CVRD wants to buy Inco, silence in Ottawa.
-Vale violates purchase agreement, silence in Ottawa
-Vale refuses to bargain in good faith, silence in Ottawa and Toronto
-Vale attempts to rewrite labour relations in Canada, thunder in Sudbury

  • The way I see it, the last best chance Local 6500 had was the "Bargaining in Bad Faith" charge that could have gone the union way.
Now, Vale Inco can hold up the results of the recent negotiations, showing their movement on key issues and then show the results of this vote.
There is no openings left to stop the mining by 3rd parties.
The company will open Creighton and Coleman with 3rd parties and bring them to full production. The efficiencies achieved by the contractors will then be the standard if the company ever does bring back the members of 6500. These expected efficiencies will be supported by the achievements of FNX, Xstrata at Nickel Rim and Cementation at Totten.
Like I said brudders & sisters, get at those resumes.
The arse is out of her here for you.
Now see what kind of job you can get with no trade and a Grade 12 certificate.

  • Is that "strong message" sent to Vale .... "Yes, as a matter of fact we ARE even stupider than the public could ever imagine"? and "Yes, we ARE the perfect example of why unions have next to ZERO SUPPORT from the public, and dropping"? Un - be - lievable!

  • This strike is about more than just Vale, this is about how it SHOULD be, things don't need to change, they never did, shmucks like Phillip Morris believe this because they watch a little too much TV. Point is, you give these corporations and inch, they'll take it, and you'll never get it back, no matter what, you'll never get it back. No matter how good things get, if the Union gives Vale this strike, they'll take a loss, a loss they'll never get it back. It's the same thing that has been going on forever, sure Vale employees have it good in the pay department, but word to big bird, IT HAS TO STAY THAT WAY.

  • Outrageous! Brotherhood of theieves? Are union bossespicking the pockets of 6500 members?
    Without trust there is nothing.
Embezzlement, False Reports, Violence, And More
Most people don't know just how many crimes are committed every year through which union officials hurt their own members.
    http://unionfacts.com/articles/crimeFraud.cfm

6500 may have been deceived for trusting too much, but they would live in torment if they didnt trust enough, tough call...poverty or torment.

  • Gonna be a long summer - oh, and fall, and winter, girls. Good luck with your new Tim's customer service careers.

  • So I guess the only thing unions are good for are keeping people from working. Time to wake up from the dream world you are all living in.

  • @hiding_behind_a_screen_name
    are you listening to yourself....

    quote
    -----------------
I hope this no vote ruins your lives. You deserve every single bit of hardship that you have brought on your families and your city. Shame on you and your blind greed. I hope your kids go to bed crying, I hope your wives leave you, I hope you lose every single possession and savings you have ever had to your name.
    -------------------

    worse one
    --------
I hope your kids go to bed crying
    -------

    then you ask...
    -----------
Boys seriously ...have you listened to those idiot?
    ------------

speaking of idiots... why don't you pick up a miror and look in it...

wishing bad on other people is more evil than thugs and sensless companies... and by the way, for the record I'm not for the union or the company... they both need to improve in certain areas.

  • so these miners want to have a guaranteed job ? they must be very low IQ because no such thing in this world offers permanent job....even in communist country...

so these miners want to force the company to go into binding arbitration by rejecting the offer ? haha!!! it won't work because it is for civil service..

so most miners do not like work in vale, vale will move on their business and these miners will seek jobs somewhere else ? who is going to hide these trouble makers ? maybe bigriver will....

  • Attention Vale bloggers: reports of more bloggers on the way. The Vale overlords are not happy that your propaganda failed. B'bye.

  • good luck ladies
you guys are done in this town
    bye bye Fera and friends

  • It's time that big corporations realize that they aren't the be-all-end-all of society. They cannot be allowed to suck all the wealth out of a community. Let's not pretend that these corporations are trying to act out of some sort of responsibility to be sustainable. What sustainable means to them is not what is best for society. Their definition was so thoroughly disproven by the fact of the economic boom of the second half of the twentieth century. Are we somehow now suppose to believe that those principles of wealth distribution were wrong?

  • Congrats Gentlemen! You have succeeded to ruin your own lives. You have hung this town out to dry. I wonder how much longer the banks will let you keep your homes, vehicles, toys, etc etc. It's now time you guys learn what life is all about. Welcome to the real world!

I'm actually glad you guys rejected the vote. Now, Vale can hire contractors to get the work done and everything will begin to return to normal, without you greedy idiots.

To the 3100 men on strike: Good Luck!(I don't really mean that...I actually wish you all worse luck!) You guys better start sucking up to all those "scabs" (contractors) you posted on your website because your days at Vale are over!

To the 15 000+ contractors that haven't worked since the strike began: Welcome back to work!

  • LOL! I can believe that the vote was 'no'. The overall opinion of the contract from the beginning was 'no'...

Good luck 6500. You're going to need it.

  • Well it has been proven 88% of Steelworkers are complete idiots. You have paralyzed this city killing the service and supply sector ....bravo.

You have proven yourselves to be nothing more then formerly over paid thugs who threaten anyone who speaks out against the movement.

My guess is 70% of you illiterate idiots didn't take the time to read the contract. You listened to your thug union leaders. Boys seriously ...have you listened to those idiot?
"you have made your bed now it is time for you to lay in it.

GREED - is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth.

Also please keep your lawn signs up as it makes it much easier for me to laugh at you idiots as I drive.

Best of luck on the next 8 months ....union suckers.

How long do you think that strike pay is going to hold out for. ?

I am also calling on every person that knows a striker that is scamming EI to call and report them. I am calling in 5 of you idiots this morning.

  • Hiding behind a... From the tone of your message, I assume you are a business owner and that things are not so good of late? I am sorry if that is the case. It is very difficult to understand and appreciate someone else's point of view when their decision directly impacts you. For the last few days, I have watched my husband read over and over this "offer of settlement" that Vale Inco has posted on their website. I know he is anxious to return to work, he loves his job, works hard and is very good at it. He has been out of town working for most of the strike. To say it has been difficult for us all as a family is an understatement but this is how it has to be. He knew a "no" vote would mean more of the same, perhaps no recall at all, but a "yes" vote meant agreeing to a lot of unknowns, and yep, perhaps having no job at all at the end of it all. What was not said in the offer meant more than what was said. He's fed up, we all are. He wants to work. I need to correct you on one part of your posting. My husband is not a thug, has never, never threatened anyone that did not share his opinion, and definitely not overpaid, hell, he is making much more now than he did for Inco but we miss him at home. Out of those 88 % that voted no, I am sure very few are rejoicing this morning. They knew before placing their x what the ramifications were- never doubt it. I am praying that my husband and I are wrong in our doom and gloom thinking and that a settlement can be reached. No need for big raises, or gravy, but it should let the members know where they stand, a general idea of what to expect upon returning to work, how many anticipated layoffs, ... just simple plain honesty to show that they do not have a hidden agenda. Why this need to have all those areas left to interpretation at a later date? Why all the secrecy if their intentions are really only to settle on a contract and move forward? Every worker regardless of where

  • Okay just to summarize... contract renewal comes, negotiations take place. USW says no concessions because they worked for decades to get where they are today. Company says this isn't the past, we need to move forward just like all other industries that have cut back. USW says no, we don't want concessions we want MORE just as they do every contract that comes out. And like a pile of pancakes growing taller and taller, eventually the pile had to topple which it did. Rehire those who broke the law? $3000 bomus just for returning to work? You put into your own pension instead of Vale putting in 100% (just like every other reality planet has the employee contribute to their own pension). And still the USW wants more... you have lost the support of Sudbury and while your ridiculous parades and protests may continue, it's time to move out of the way and allow those who do want to work, onto the property. Good bye USW.

  • There are contracting companies that don't do mining in Sudbury who are willing to cross the picket lines, they have just been waiting for the right moment. You know it's not hard to burn your bridges in a community you don't live in.. Also Cementation and Redpath are not the only contractors who are around.. there are dozens of other fine contractors who don't want to come to Sudbury because of the retards they would have to deal with.. well I guess they don't have to put up with them anymore.. they will be living on the street..

  • And to the 6500... you do what you gotta do..and so Vale does what they have to do. I think you can officially STOP complaining that people are crossing the line now.

And WTF is up with a fire barrel in the middle of a parking lot when it +8 outside? Can't you be like every other normal person and just throw your trash away instead of burning it? Does burning it make you feel more manly, making a statement, photo op? WTF??!?!??

  • Well Well Well! You guys have all committed financial suicide!!

  • Well it has been proven 88% of Steelworkers are complete idiots. You have paralyzed this city killing the service and supply sector ....bravo.

  • @ spanky
Until this vote, the large contractors like Redpath and Cementation were reluctant to "cross the line" perhaps because there was no assurance from the company that it would be a long term contract. They were concerned that the strike would be settled and then the returning Local 6500 would vent their frustrations on the contractors in place.
Now, the company can assure them that Coleman and Creighton will be total contractor mines when or if Local 6500 returns to work.
You guys opened this door a mile.
Can you look at your family and say "Just like Goldcorp."

  • What a mistake these guys made. You put the final nail in your coffins. You believed the spin from your executive. Job security. Who has job security or do you mean all I have to do is show up for 30 years and collect a paycheck without doing anything productive and can't be released. Watching you guys on TV is all I needed to understand your mentality. One more year!!!

  • The taking back of our country has just begun. Let it be clear to all greedy corporations in Canada, our culture and dignity are not for sale. You must learn to respect the Canadian tradition of bargaining in good faith. Leave your goon tactics at the border!

  • "If the Steelworkers ever guessed that Sudburians had some thread of support for them, it's completley gone now."
"If the Steelworkers ever guessed that Sudburians had some thread of support for them, it's completley gone now."

Must be an echo here. Seamus was just thinking the same thing.

  • 8 months of Propaganda, to vote on a sugar coated poison pill. And still no word on those 'commitments'. ?

  • Hey PM, mabe you and noofie there can go work for vale, seeing as how opinionated and knowledgeable You will be assets to vale...

  • So where do you suppose they will find that many people able to mine, nursing homes? No mining contractor willing to cross the picket lines, no feed, no smelter, no money....

  • USW members, don't ever forget this temporary feeling of victory.
    It won't last long.
Vale has just been given the mandate they needed to pursue moving to full production with replacement workers. 8 months on the lines and 6500 is even further away from ever getting their jobs back now. Banks have been sitting quietly on the sidelines. Hoping the union would come to it's senses. Now that there is no end in sight, they will begin to reclaim all those bouncing toy and mortage payments.
Kamakazie labour action is no way to win your jobs back. This Black Friday will be remembered as the day a once proud and respected union committed financial suicide. All on the altar of egos and greed.
If the Steelworkers ever guessed that Sudburians had some thread of support for them, it's completley gone now.

Nicely played Vale. Nobody can accuse you of bargaining in bad faith or not offering a FAIR LAST CHANCE deal. The one year anniversary of the strike will be a somber one. Celbrated only by the 1000 new hires inside the plants.
ONE DAY TOO LONG. - ITS OVER BOYS

  • Right on!!! I'm with you on that raise miner, better work conditions and pay, more advancement opportunity, I hope my co-worker's have done the same, when it comes time for Vale to return to normal operation they will be screwed, will only have those 70 year old farts left HA HA HA!!!!

  • noofie, you mad that you can't hack it? get a new job who gives a shit, there is a lot more to this world than a shit Company like Vale Inco, I quit Vale and make way more now than I did there.

  • Well you guys better start doing up your resumes and getting your common core records. Your next employer may ask for them unless its flipping burgers on nite shift.

    DUMB! DUMB!! DUMB!!
