On March 22, Steelworkers Local 6500 will be holding a “massive rally to show the solidarity and support that our local has from our members, our community, our province and from around the world.”

The event starts at 4:30 p.m. at the union's hall at 66 Brady St., according to an invitation to the event sent out on Facebook.

Thirty delegates from around the world will be attending the event.

“We are looking for community members, organizations, clubs, unions, political groups and community businesses to attend in large numbers and bring your banners, your flags and your signs,” the invitation said.

“We need your help to show Vale Inco that we have the solidarity and the strength of our brothers and sisters everywhere — from around the corner to around the world. Come to Sudbury and help us stand strong and unblinking in the face of Vale.”

  • What a great time for a rally. 4 30 PM. Stay in the parking lot and off the steeets at rush hour or you'll only alienate more non strikers.

  • Union members and Vale are not the only ones suffering from this strike....ordinary Sudburians ,small & mediun business owners are suffering too. Lets get this thing settled and get our lives back on track again

  • Can I just ask why hundreds of Union Members will show up to the Union Hall to collect 75 bucks, but they won't go back to work to support their families?!
Another Rally that will give more false hope?!
I hope there are some real men out there that care more about their families than their cronies...so much for Brotherhood, when the layoffs come, they'll be bumping each other left and right - not to mention the old guys who will see young men laid off so that they can "pay for their new house in Florida" (you know who you are)!!
Go back to work, hope you still have a job when all is said and done, and retire if you should. Gone are the days when Unions were needed for safety reasons and fair wages...now they seem to protect thugs and lazy @ss workers.

  • yeah..applause for RobertHood everyone. I support people who willingly walk off the job because they are having a massive suck attack..YEAH..RED DRAGONS!!!

  • So what is this..rally 901? The other 900 haven't brought you any luck..but i'm sure this one will...well..at least some of those fat @sses will be getting exercise.

  • Well Don, you're correct.
The defining moment for 6500 and labour in this city will occur on Thursday.
With a "No" vote, the union will be committing suicide. Codemning its members to certain unemployment and financial ruin. - With mining and smelting cutting workforces everywhere, unemployment at 10.5%, and the albatraoss of being from 6500, just how are they ever going to get a job?
With a "Yes" vote, the union brass will be facing a strong non confidence mandate. Fera, Fraser and Gerard must consider stepping down. All have 30+ years anyhow. Time to take your pension and the blame. (8 months for nothing). Vale will have proven the union can't push them.
The rank and file will take back their union and Sudburians just might be willing to open the door to forgiveness.
-Pretty clear what the self thinking, family man should do here.
No matter the vote, Sudbury labour will forever change. Let's hope egos are checked at the door and the working family wins this fair deal.

  • You IDIOTS stop trying to bully this city you have a generous offer on the table and your workers should accept it . Any union member with a mind of their own should vote yes and hope that they never see this union again . Why does the union want bigger wage hikes ? So they can take more from your wages in union dues ...they have alot of bills to pay over the last 8 months. VOTE YES AND WORK >VOTE NO AND ......go bankrupt.

  • RobertHood. I don't define my life or who I am by my job. I am who I am not because of who I work for, but for my time and life outside of work. My job is just that....a job.

Work to live. Don't live to work.

  • Hey guys? (those that posted below, and the like) I have an idea.

You should organize a corporate agenda rally. It could be about supporting job losses, wage cuts, political back door deals and plant closures. You could wave Foreign ownership flags and chant "Who are we?" Then everyone could look at each other and shrug their shoulders and giggle.

I bet the numbers would be huge!!!

  • Another one. How many rallies are they going to have, last one was at the university, I never heard how many people were stupid enough donated their first hours pay. Is this what's going to happen at this rally more begging.

  • Kinda presumptuous by the union leaders to assume the rank-and-file won't think for themselves and accept the latest deal?

It's going to be quite the embarrassment when the couple hundred die hards show up to protest a lost 8 month strike and a concession accepted contract.
Wait and see. The ballot counting will go on for hours. Re-counted, and re-re-counted by the union. Trying to wiggle their way out of a 50+1% acceptance.
    Bottom line?
Plenty o' free hot dogs and bristol board for the kiddies come March 22nd.
    Get there early folks.

  • How many times do people have to say it?? You do NOT have the support of the community, the province or the world.

Are your union leaders brain dead?

By the way, memo to the mayor and city council ... keep your damn noses out of this.

  • I'l be there
Anyone know where I can get 6 dozen eggs and a whole bunch of tomatoes for cheap :)
What a bunch over paid whiny babies
Karma is gonna kick them right in the a$$

  • Bring out the Irish Regiment!

  • Thanks for the warning! I trust all honest hard working citizens will stay indoors to ensure their safety. Keep your video cameras available lest your property be attacked by these thugs! Remember the last rally, at least one attempted murder, dozens of incidents of vandalism, thousands of incidents of littering. I would expect the authorities to deploy the resources required to protect the citizen of Sudbury. We are tired of living in fear of these union thugs.

  • OK.........so Fera-Fraser-Gerard are this confident Local 6500 will not accept the Vale Inco offer. I'd feel like I was being manipulated here........but thats me.

No free food? No face painting?

I'm betting 350 attendees including the canary and the grim raper guy.
