Venue for Steelworkers' rally changed due to 'safety concerns'

Concerns about the delays caused by the Bridging the Gap rally led USW Local 6500 president John Fera to speak to the media. A similar rally in January tied up downtown streets for hours. File photo.

UPDATED - March 18, 12:42 p.m.

The location of a United Steelworkers Local 6500 rally planned for the late afternoon of March 22 has been changed from the Paris Street bridge to the Sudbury Arena after emergency and hospital staff expressed concern about safety issues related to the plan.

The Steelworkers made the decision after a meeting held with Greater Sudbury Police, Greater Sudbury Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services and Sudbury Regional Hospital staff this morning (March 18).

“There were safety concerns about closing off one of the main arteries to the city,” Greater Sudbury Police Insp. Dan Markiewich said.

“Police, fire and EMS (using the bridge) while speeches and the rally were taking place was a concern. Individuals who bring their loved ones to the hospital...the delay that could cause could be tragic. Those (concerns) were discussed at length.”

Those involved in the rally were originally slated to meet at the Steelworkers Hall on Brady Street at around 4:30 p.m., and march to the Paris Street bridge, arriving at 5 p.m.

The rally participants were to be split in two and travel two different routes.

One group would have exited Brady Street, and travelled through the residential area of Riverside Drive and Worthington Street, and turning back onto Paris Street. The second group was slated to travel from Brady onto Elgin Street, onto Van Horne, and finally onto Paris Street.

The plan now involves the rally participants marching from Brady Street onto Minto Street, and then entering the Sudbury Arena. Markiewich said roads in the area will only be closed for about half an hour.

Local 6500 president John Fera could not immediately be contacted to discuss the issue.

However, according to media reports, he told reporters March 17 that he was “sorry for the inconvenience” the rally may cause to the public.

The rally has been called Bridging the Gap because it was supposed to take place on the Bridge of Nations on Paris Street, where flags of countries around the world fly. Delegates from around the world are scheduled to attend the rally.

  • What a mess you slobs left in the downtown and parking lots. Even the hookers and crackhead have better manners than you USW slugs!!

  • Tito Martin does not understand that it does not matter what the reasons are the dispute goes on.With the right now to allow scabs like William Day who has not payed its truckers in 2 months because Vale has not payed him is ludicrus. Union members must use whatever they have left at there disposal to fight even if its not fair.
I mean either side is playing fair.Vale has baught our MP Rick Bartelucci by employing his daughter in the HR department put her on an extended pregnancy leave. So dad will not take sides to protect the daughter. That is not playing fair or is it.

  • If you think the March Of The Lemmings isn't a public relations disaster, wait and see how Leo and his pals will further embarrass themselves. The hollow union and socialist demagogue will more than comical.
Eventually the nashing of teeth and sipping of their Double-Doubles will subside. At the end of the day (yet another one day too long) they'll slide back to their homes and sulk. Waiting for the next two hundred bucks and the knock of the repo man.
On the horizon, Inco churns on. Closer to 100% production.
Yup. Good day for a parade.

  • Now,now boys.........we all know that the police were worried that some of the militant unionists wanted to throw some of you 'clowns' over the bridge.Could have been a public relation disaster for the union,lol.......although we would have gotten a break from the incessant daily whining of the usual union bashers.

  • Too bad about the bridge thing. I heard when the 2 groups would meet on the bridge, Gerard and Fera were going to do the Kabooka to the tune of Kool Aid Rock led by the Bus Driver.
I don't think I'll go now, it will be boring and no fun. I'll wash my car instead.

  • The rally theme was originally "Bridging The Gap". 6500's intention was to have 2 groups meet at the Paris Street Bridge and rally under the Canadian flag.
Of course there is no bridge in the revised plan. Anger from Sudburians about blocking a major artery and clogging access to the hospital stopped that.

Now, with no bridge, the theme has to be changed. I suggest something more accurate of their dispute:
March to the Frood Open Pit. Call it, "Lemmings to the Cliff".

  • Give it up Share the Wealth
Better minds than you saw the folly in letting these goons and their kids loose on the bridge.

  • The bridge has been shut down for various parades, and marches and construction, and raising of flags and speaches many times. Emergency vehicles would be let through without delay should there be a need \especially with police present at the site and escorting emerency vehichles through.

Besides, the hospital can be easily and quickly accessed by Regent street to York st. to Walford rd. to paris without a any problems.

I liked the original bridge plan for the rally. This would make a true and bold statement. Traffic jams in this city are minimal compared to up to 2 or more hours delay in traffic in Toronto, 401 highway or other where workers commute to and from surrounding communities. I am not a Steelworker nor is are any of my immediate family members, but I do support their cause.

  • Some big, dumb union tool will intentionally step in front of a moving vehicle, and claim "they tried to run me over!"
Statement by Lloyd=You are right om the money here, have seen it myself years ago, same as what happened in Levack a few weeks ago when a goon stepped infront of an AFI vehicle.Vale-Gold Corp..= 6500 soon.Should be minus 6500...

  • As an ardent supporter of the Ndp,i think Phil Morris's assessment of them is incorrect.Just because the majority of Canadians DONT support them.........does NOT mean they are wrong in their endeavours.

For example,im positive the 'majority ' of Canadians think we should pay less tax, less gst, less ei premiums, less Canada pension premiums, etc, etc ......all the while getting MORE health care, more police officers more and better government services, etc

Point is........'majority' is NOT always right

  • There's a reason the NDP has been relegated to a distant 3rd place in Ontario and 4th in Ottawa.
Clinging to official party status at the good graces of the other parties.
Sudbury's stubborn union loyalty and payola pretty much secures a few thousand votes for the socialist party. Everywhere else Canadians won't support Taliban Jack's crew. Can anybody recall when an MPP took a free trip (Brazil) and openly represented the group that paid them?
Shameful pandering for votes and insulting to the other 150,000 Sudburians that need represnetation. Ignore her obligations in the Legislature. Take a union trip/vacation.

My observations are factual. Your 'big business' conspiracy theory is socialist hype.

  • Informed.......that is the most convoluted email you have ever written.Methinks, you have been spending TOO much time with PMS

  • Housewife...now why would you assume that? Never said anything about the conservatives. Once again, someone makes an assumption that is totally incorrect. ***recall*** just because someone makes a statement (like the fact that the NDP are strong in Sudbury because of the many unionized workers working and living here) DOES NOT mean that the other political parties NOT mentioned are forgotten.

Here's a piece of advice...never make assumptions. Usually when you do, you're completely wrong.

  • Wow,are 'PMS" and 'Informed' ever bright. The Ndp are in 'the pocketbooks' of the unions?? Really?????? Its only FIFTY years the Ndp have been advocates of the working class........and you just figured that out NOW??? And i suppose the Conservatives are NOT in the 'pocketbooks' of big business???????

Give your collective heads a shake

  • LOL! Well said PM! I couldn't have said it better myself. I AM one of those Sudburians you mentioned that is insulted by the blatant abuse of nationalism. But, alas, most of the 6500 members (not all...) that post on here have been blind-sided by the Union rhetoric spouted off by USW leaders...and no matter how much you tell them...they just won't see the bigger picture. Its like beating your head off a brick wall.

  • Way to back track there river. Try not to trip over your own feet with your damage control.
At least you got one thing right. And the Steelworkers are the backbone of the NDP in our area. Gelinas and her buddies are deep in their pocketbooks. Forced dues going to the party. And they get the NDP as a mouthpiece. Payola.
    Sickening.
Remember that the Mine Mill once the Inco union. The CANADIAN Mine Mill workers. Raided in the 60's by the AMERICAN run Steelworkers.
That's the truth. Still remains to this day. - Don't try revisionist history hoping the past would somehow cloud the facts. - You are a slave to Pittsburgh and the USW of America. Gerard calls the shots from his office tower in another country.
A foreign country. One that is different that we didn't share their vision in 1812, WWI in 1914, WW II 1939 or in 2003's invasion of Iraq. We are proudly a seperate nation and only now when your greedy fight is failing, the union wraps itself in the Canadian flag?
Oh, but the USA, the evil corporate empire is now your pals because your union is Yankee owned?
Just like Vale was awesome when you raked in $25,000 anually in bonuses?
Convenient nationalisim has backfired on 6500. Sudburians are insulted by your blatant abuse of Canada for your own greedy, dead end fight. Its no longer about the contract, its deflected to patriotisim? - Tisk tisk.

  • “The Steelworkers Union has been in Canada for a very long time. It is not a foreign union.”
    Xenophobia?
Sorry brother. My ancestors came to Canada as Loyalists to avoid American atrocities during their Revolutionary War. Then there was the War of 1812, the Fenian Raids, the aftermath of the US Civil War and several other possible incursions right up and until the late 1930's.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Plan_Red
Like it or not. Canada was and still is a separate entity.
And until you brought it up I don’t recall the Brazilians causing Canada any problems.

  • The Steelworkers Union has been in Canada for a very long time. It is not a foreign union. It was a founding constituent of the NDP. And since when has America been foreign to Canada. We've shared a history and culture since we were all British colonies. So now some Brazilian based conglomerate complains about xenophobia and they themselves are trying to spread it.

  • Indeed. A foreign union hiding behind a CANADIAN flag complaining about foreign ownership.
    What a pile of crap!
Perhaps it's time to get rid of these foreign dominated (you fill in the blank) based in Pittsburgh, USA and join a CANADIAN union concerned about CANADIAN workers.
    http://www.caw.ca/en/3276.htm
Seems to have worked for the CANADIAN bargainers at Xstrata.

  • How pathetic this rally is. They have to pay people to go to it and then pay for people from around the world to come and speak. Lets see some honesty boys. How much money are you going to spend on this propoganda campaign of lies and hate. How much are you paying each speaker? When will your funds run out ? How much are you in debt today? How much more are your creditors willing to lend you? When you pay people to participate it is not a rally it is a job and it should get "ZERO" press.

  • I support Vale for the investment has been put in Canada and maintaining thousands of jobs here!!!!! Without this company, many of us will not have a good income job..

I just can not wait for this thug like union to be decertified and bankrupt, this union is so ego and can not let go the past, maybe they need to see the new world now...this union also hiding behind canadian Flag and trying to make this an national interests, but they just fighting for their own interests/greed... stop champaiging and BS around to serve your fat belly!!!!! every rally they have, the numbers of participants always less than the strikers and about 600 people did not show up to vote.. you can not call 90% as a success unless you are brainless trying to fool other people!! Do not expect binding arbitration in a private company, if you do not like your job, stop balking around and making trouble, just go somewhere if you are competent enough, not to hide behind the thug union!!

USW 6500 deserves no supports, no respects!!!

  • Lloyd, if hot air makes a balloon go up, what is holding you down?

They shouldn't let children post on these boards.

  • Strikers shouldn't be allowed anywhere near traffic. Some big, dumb union tool will intentionally step in front of a moving vehicle, and claim "they tried to run me over!"
It's Lesson One from "The Union Tool's Handbook on Picket Line Tactics to Try to Dupe the Public for Support".

  • UnionWoman
Bridge construction with concrete dividers and traffic lights are one thing. A USW group of 175 - 250 people (5000 in union-speak)including children without confinement as traffic whizzes by is a whole different ball game.

I'm getting tired of this bs about"foreign companies raping our natural resources". Local 6500 members were the ones who "raped" the natural resources and did it gleefully for a few extra dollars. Admittedly these union mercenaries were paid by a subsidiary of a Brazilian owned company but we didn't see letters to the editor expressing concerns about this.
The executives of Vale are enjoying bonuses based on the global earnings of Vale. Vale Inco is and was a money losing subsidiary of Vale but these losses were absorbed by the profits made elsewhere.

  • That foreign based union is paying rent for the use of the arena?
    Well. Is it?

  • So, it wasn't unsafe when the bridge was under construction and down to two lanes? That didn't impede traffic flow during rush hour? It didn't hinder emergency vehicles? What about the safety of the construction workers?

This strike isn't about racism. It is about foreign companies raping our natural resources and wanting Canadian workers to "enjoy" the same standards as the workers in third world countries. While the Executives are all still enjoying multimillion dollar bonuses.

    Smarten up people.

  • The police should stop the USW from marching on Brady and Minto streets and Sudbury mayor should charge the Union a lot of money to go to the Sudbury arena. They certainly are not a good Union.

  • @ Sudbury Gal
Don't give the USW credit for that decision too quickly Sudbury Gal. It may be they didn't have and couldn't get a permit for the "parade".

The point that "informed" makes regarding USW's plan to confine the demo to 2 lanes of the bridge and keep 2 lanes open is another indication of the questionable intelligence of of the union leadership.

  • USW learned something!!! OMG I am shocked they actually listed to public concerns and moved the rally.

Did you see the "press conference" to annoucne the original plans?? What a Joke!! Fera was speaking to a few reporters, the organizers of the rally and MANY MANY MANY empty chairs!! HA HA, yea your union suports you John, the empty chairs prove it.

Your guys on the line are starting to think for themselves rather than being told what do do by you...better watch out, the revolt will happen soon.

  • I do hope that the USW will be paying rent for the use of the Sudbury Arena!!!

  • I really do feel for you strikers and your families, but are you strikers complete morons or is it just your union leaders ( if I may call them that ). What the hell are you thinking in the first place thinking you could shut down one of the main streets, in a hospital zone at rush hour.

You are going to have to get it through Fera,s fat head that this is not Sudbury,s strike, it's USW'S strike and YOU ARE QUICKLY LOSING SUPPORT OF THIS COMMUNITY.

  • Camoman...you must be crazy to think that emergency vehicles could still get through! Seriously, are you telling me that with the amount of people 'expected' to show up, that they wouldn't spill into those lanes? The ambulance would have to slow down, and navigate with extreme caution so they don't hit anyone on their way through!!!! I'm sure there will be kids there too, so who would stop them from running out into those 'free' lanes! Give your head a shake!

  • camoman
The steelworkers said they would keep two lanes open and the city wouldn't believe and trust you?

    Go figure.

Make sure any school teachers who show up at your rally get special seating consideration. After all, it was their Canadian pension fund that sold a big block of Inco shares to CVRD

  • The first rally drew about 2500...
This second is estimated at 5000(plus supporters from around the world, that's why for the bridge of nations)...
If more Canadians were aware of how these huge foreign corporate giants treat both the employees and the environment with utter disdain & reckless abandon. How they get around our laws, how every time Canada takes them to court the Canadian Tax payer foots the bill...
Maybe, just maybe the Government would pass laws to ensure a benefit to Canada...

  • If you were better informed you would have known that the north bound lanes were to be kept open for just that reason....
If any thing all emergency vehicles would be able to get to their destination faster because there would not be any traffic....
I still think this was a mistake....

  • All of Canada should be made aware of what is happening here=====Do you honestly think the rest of Canada gives two hoots what is happening here in Sudbury..will you steelworkers get over yourselves, you are not that important, maybe in your own mind you are but in the grand schene of things you are but a pimple on an elephants butt.......

  • Camoman, that is the most selfish thing I have heard anyone say with regards to the strike! You should be ashamed of yourself! Paris street is a critical roadway to the hospital and NEEDS to remain open so that someone who is dying can get the care they need immediately without delay! 6500 wants community support? Saying that the strike is more important the other peoples lives will NOT accomplish that!!! And the union rhetoric you're spouting about Canada? give it up. This is a LABOUR DISPUTE not a national catastophe.

I'm glad that emergency services of Sudbury decided to change the location for the rally. 6500 and their goals are NOT more important than peoples lives.

  • at the potential cost of innocent lives due to traffic being backed up (think ambulances) camoman?
They may gain nationwide media attention, but for the wrong reasons.

  • I think this was/is a big mistake....
Sudbury's labour dispute should be made aware nation wide....
If impeding trafic for a few hours would get this, than I say "JUST DO IT"....
All of Canada should be made aware of what is happening here...
If all Canadians stood together and SCREAMED FOUL, maybe the Government would follow suit and pass laws,Like maybe an "ANTI SCAB LAW"

  • Oh and by the way. Great investment opportunity for anyone interested.
    Vale prices €750m notes offering.
    http://www.miningweekly.com/article/vale-prices-750m-notes-offering-2010-03-17
WOW! The notes, due 2018, will bear a coupon of 4.375% a year, payable annually, at a price of 99.564% of the principal amount.
You won't get that at a bank or from Canada Savings Bonds.

  • I am glad the location change. I would hate to see someone die because an ambulance couldn't get to them on time.

  • Not to worry.
Redriquez has told his buddies at the Steel Hall to back off. The rally will be at the arena instead of the Paris Street bridge.
His Worship may be be a pinko nut but he's not that stupid.
Besides he still wants to be re-elected and get his zillion dollar arts centre built.

  • The cowards backed down

The USW backed down and is using that pathetic 'public safety' crap to cover their cowardly tracks: they are going to the darn arena where the rats belong.

FRom the guys that burn open barrels in the middle of town (breaking bylaws and threatening the safety of the old homes in West end), that slash tires,...that hold their kids in front of ore trucks..

The USW had to back down.

This is to the USW's bloggers that said 'lets see if you have more supporters thats us'...and to that one clown that said 'we will rally anywhere we want'

    Guess what

YOU LIE!! YOU BAD! WE WIN!!! WE GOOD!!!

    :)

  • I read the contract posted by their employer... so many people would love to have a contract that good. I can't understand why the union wouldn't want it!

  • I'll have my booth set up at the south end of the bridge to take boats, ATV's, sleds, bike for sale on consignment....

  • Great news Ken! Won't have to waste as much effort towing Leo and Fera in the horse trailer.

  • It appears the union has had a change of heart as now the rally will be held at the arena. Finally, they made one right decision.

  • scupperdrain

I would provide the name and company here...but look at the usual thug-comments. They would organize one of their tire-slashing and woman-intimidating gangs to terrorize this guys company. I never heard of them before, but the letter came to our office, and I looked them up on the WEB, and they are the real deal: world wide.

It states that if the rally occurs and it disrupts the flow of traffic, delays, intimidates or threatems potential clients or customers, employees and or their families, and it is a rally sanctioned by the city, that a full page add will be posted in a local paper looking for those whose personal lives or businesses have been disrupted by both this rally and the downtown rally earlier this year. It states that it will hold the City responsible as well as the USW for disrupting businesses and people who are uninvolved in the strike and seek damages from both.

Stay tuned. Its going to get interesting!

  • the real mucker-can i ride shot-gun?

  • 10% unemployment rate in this town of 160,000,i`m sure there are plenty of ppl to fill those 3000 jobs-start sending resumes to vale-

  • didn`t inco and the canadian gov. steal that land they r on from whitefish lake first nation?500 billion dollar lawsuit launched--that first and foremost should be dealt with

  • Perhaps 6500 might consider rallying around Bartolucci's driveway thus preventing him from participating in any further politics...to prevent him from further attending Queen's Park. The idea of a rally is good....don't inconvience the public though...inconvience the politicians responsible...where their most vulnerale...at their home...show as much consideration to their families as was shown to 6500 members, these politicians are supposed to work for us?

  • sudsatnight, very interested in that as I could not agree more. How would one get a hold of this petition?

  • Mucker and johnboy, I'd tell you off but I'm starting to get winded. Anyhow, why is it that Tamils can block a highway in Toronto to protest a war that we have no involvement in and nobody blinks. When Canadian workers march to protest for their jobs, all of a sudden it's an inconvience.

  • this is pretty stupid, i have to admit, i support the strike, but this is just DUMB. it's like they're trying to make enemies.

  • Get back to the bargaining table so the guys can get back to work~!

  • I'm really surprised that Fera wants this rally in a location that blocks access to the hospitals. Obviously he and Leo won't be marching in the parade and so won't need the ambulance services from the inevitable heart attacks they would have otherwise suffered from performing minimal physical exertion.

  • I received a letter from the CEO of a local business who is considering trying to bring a class action suit against the city and the USW for the rally on the grounds that although the USW has the right to rally true, but the city has the responsibility to only grant a license for a location that is 'appropriate'. The argument being that the rally will disrupt businesses that have no relationship to the labor conflict, and that it could be held in an area of high public exposure without disrupting the normal traffic.

It’s like protesting a political issue by blocking your neighbors drive way even though he has nothing to do with it. There is a petition going around so that if the rally actually holds up any traffic, a lawsuit may be sought.

You are free to have a rally in Canada yes, but you are not free to hold it anytime, anywhere, and in particular if its is a public nuisance.

I agree with this: if the mayor allows this to happen, he is finished. It will show that the mayor is in his office not for the benefit of Sudburians: but for his left-leaning labor buddies.

There is nearly 20,000 people that cross that bridge each day: , every day. AND THE ARE NOT WITH THE USW!! Drive around south end: you might see 3 of those stupid signs.

VALE has conducted its self professionally and within the accepted norms of corporate governance.

The USW will build hatred alright: hatred against them!!

  • Fera says he's sorry if this rally causes any inconvenience?

The whole purpose of the bridge location is to get maximum attention and that can't happen if they don't cause maximum inconvenience.

"Delegates from around the world will be attending the event."

    Delegates for what????
