Mar 05, 2010- 3:15 PM

By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff

Representatives from the United Steelworkers and Vale Inco will continue to meet this weekend, according to media reports.

The two sides are speaking with the help of independent mediator Kevin Burkett.

More than 3,000 people are on strike at Sudbury and Port Colborne, Ont. Vale Inco operations. The strike began July 13, and is about nearing its eighth month.

Neither side is commenting on the progress of the talks, as a media blackout order has been issued by Burkett.

Vale already posted a "fair Deal" several months ago and the union chose to ingore it..remember..why would you want them to post it again when all you guys did was critize it.Maybe when or if 6500 gets less this time around you will be happy tomoreĀ» get original "fair deal" again. I doubt if Vale has let you walk the line for 8 months to give in now for anything more than what was offered, maybe change things around a bit but the bottom line will be the same.Should have used common sense 8 months age......

I'll post this Thursday when the "Fair deal" is accepted and then we can talk.

  • Talks are good no matter how you look at it. I wonder if Vale Inco will post a "Fair Deal" for everyone to see?

    Huh?

  • Huh?

  • Just like the union biting the hand that feeds it.

  • Phil wants to start with disgusting comments, I'll bite.

  • wow kratos that was uncalled for

  • I sure hope that USW and Vale Inco reach an agreement and that the 6500 workers go back to work.

  • Distain or disdain? Please clarify PM.

Rob, my finger is on the pulse of the strike, and accuratly measuring the community's distain for 6500.

Didn't I say that? I didn't know you were "accuratly measuring" though. Typically men don't do that "accuratly", they exagerate.

I'm guessing since I am a picket my finger would be in my nose? Get it? Picket (pick it), nose, LOL.

  • Perhaps going into bargaining with Vale we were indeed "disillusioned". Now we see clearly and comprhend completly what we are dealing with. Thanks Vale, for clearing it up for the "new" talks!

    Good point PM, thanks.

  • Hey PM. If a salesman was to offer brand new tires on the POS car would you buy it?

So a retirement offer really isn't relevant, is it?

Is Fera is begging like a cat in the meeting to make himself a hero in front of them miners?

Really? This should be a nominee for something. Sorry I just had to.

I thought that this far in the Anti/Pro war there would be a little higher standard. Are the Antis going to the meetings?

  • Sorry I can't tell you the 'facts'. Media blackout.

Continue with your whatever you call it.

Oh...Cat's don't beg, dogs do and we are not all 'miners'.

Just helping ya out so you can seem to have your finger on the pulse of the strike like PM.

  • Is Fera is begging like a cat in the meeting to make himself a hero in front of them miners?

  • And if they are smart it will still be there, I'm sure it will be well used

  • Mr.allsiwell, they did offer a retirement bonus in the original fair deal.
$20,000 for taking your pension. And the Stealworkers turned it down.
Since the choice to strike began, over 200 disillusioned with the BS from the union and given up. Taking their pensions, sans bonus. Minus months of lost wages.

  • Lets hope that the Strikeforce Facebook group do not screw things up with the busloads of protesters going to Toronto tomorrow. That is all the sensible members need is that group of idiotd to do something stupid.

  • well if vale is smart and they need to reduce their workforce, they should offer a retirement package. Most of their young people are hard working miners, many with mining degrees that will leave the city as mining is booming and the older guys are leaving within a couple of years anyways. Then they will have to hire and train all over again if they lay off the younger guys now.

  • how many fewer employees will there be after a settlement?

  • Let's hope there's an end in sight....
