UPDATED - March 15, 8:54 a.m.
Members of Steelworkers Local 6200, located in Port Colborne, Ont., voted 98 per cent against a contract offer presented by their employer, Vale Inco. This came a day after members of Local 6500, located in Greater Sudbury, rejected the same offer on March 11.
Of the 112 eligible voters of the Local, 108 voted, with 106 votes cast to reject the offer, and two to accept.
"Our members would like nothing better than to return to work," Myles Sullivan, Steelworkers staff representative said in a press release. "But once they had the opportunity to fully assess the details and implications of Vale's offer, they realized to what degree this company continues to treat them with contempt and disrespect."
Since July 13, more than 3,000 employees with Vale Inco have been on strike, both in Greater Sudbury and Port Colborne. The strike enters its eighth month today, March 13. This is the first contract offer in the eight months.
"Our members are angry and disappointed," Wayne Rae, president of United Steelworkers Local 6200, said in the press release. "Our members may be hurting after eight months on the picket line, but they have sent a clear message to Vale that they must be treated with fairness, respect and dignity. They deserve a contract that benefits our workers and our communities, as well as the company."
