Steelworkers Local 6500 members are planning to hold a rally in front of Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci's office on Cedar Street May 20.

They will meet at their Brady Street hall at 12 p.m. after the union's general membership meeting, and march over to Bartolucci's office.

They plan to “deliver a message regarding the use of scabs in our community and the lack of government involvement,” according to a schedule of events for the month of May, provided by the union.

There will be a barbecue at the Brady Street hall at 2 p.m., following the rally.

  • Nevermind....it did happen....it was just very quick!

  • Did anyone see this 'rally'?

I was out at 1 pm, downtown...and nothing. No rally.

  • The fair contract will come in a week or too and will include the concessions first outlined last july. The increased pensions, retirement incentives and signing and production bonus will be included. To all those who said they will not return to work if there are any concessions..........please dont let the door hit you on the way out. Your 10 months of union rhetoric has shown everyone your incompetency to judge conditions before going on strike and a very poor choice in blindly following union leaders. At least now even they see the light. Do you?

  • Do it on a Sunday as I doubt if Rick will be in his office anyway..Rallies are not what is needed,,common sense is what is needed..Sit down and talk with Vale and find out what they want in their operating plan..Let the members know …Minus the union rhetoric and minus the fired guy on the barganing team.....

  • for those of you that don't understand my post (first one), it is because it's hard to implicate sarcasm in text. It was comment to be laid out on the same level and speed as the USW 6500.

Maybe you should bring Rick a hamburger, maybe he'll listen to you at least for the duration of the time it takes him to eat it.

  • Further to that,'bigriver',DONT be surprised if the tories get a big political campaign contribution from Vale come next election

  • Where's the net benefit to Canada? Millions lost in wages, ergo taxes to the government. When even the government pretends that they have no power to effect change here, you know there's something wrong here. Make a mistake on your taxes and see how long it takes them to act.

  • Shame on you spud.Never judge a man by his spelling or education.

Some illiterate, dirt poor farmer would give you the shirt off his back, while some millionaire high profile lawyer may scam your grandmother out of her last $5.

  • Spud2, now thats funny! rehtoric/rhetoric, canadian/Canadian, dont/don't,benifets/benifits

  • dont know what you guys expect out of these rallies you go to, other than dropping public support for your cause even more, there is no interference from a federal or provincial mpp in this matter allowed under the law. if you want some politician to stand beside you and spew your rehtoric with you...go see the NEW DUMMY PARTY.

  • camoman...first of all, dont profess to be fighting for canadian rights when you cant even spell the country in which you live and want laws to protect...secondly re read the foreign investment act, as you will see there are taxes on what they produce and sell here. just because you dont get a check in your pocket for your share doesnt mean vale does not pay for the right. although the government gets it you still receive free health care, highways are maintained and services are givin to you like UI. So if you think of it like this...while you have been on strike for 11 months and collected UI indirectly vale has paid your UI benifets you or so many of your fellow strikers have been receiving. Get a clue...drop the union rehtoric and get informed, ignorance is no excuse for you.

  • I hope the rally shuts down the whole down town!
Tricky Rick should be the one cooking at the BBQ.
@ ex sud..what is the sales tax in Alberta?
wallbanger did you bang your head this morning?

  • All vale wants are CADADA'S RESOURCES...
vale doesn't care if Canadians work or not...

I won't give up the FIGHT...
Maybe the Government will start to see what vale is doing to Canada and Canadians, and Tighten up and/or change the Laws to benefit Canadians...
Maybe Canada should do what Australia did...Put a 40% tax on all resources that leave the country if it’s not processed in their country, with their citizens...
Than all of Canada would benefit...

  • poor rick he has enough on his plate without a bunch of hardliners with a bag of tricks include misinformation lies bullying.hidden agendas perhaps he has a lot in common with them policticans has its own bag of tricks

  • Considering Bartolucci's role as mpp, should be the welfare of ALL HIS constituents..........his silence is DEAFENING

  • Correct me if I am wrong, but the reference to Alberta, as I understand, is that it was a ONE time payout in 2006 of $400 per person. It was called a resource rebate (AKA prosperity cheque). Not sure if it was taxable. That was the ONLY year it was paid out.

  • MAXIM, I've been living in Alberta for over two years and I have yet to receive a check from all the oil we have here...not sure where you're getting that information!!

  • Maxi, your twisted anti-government, anti-corporate, socialist conspiracy laden mindset isn't solving anything.
Delfecting and blaming everyone else for your woes is a sign of weakness and defeat.
11 months on that road is a dead end.

And you ask what's a Fair Deal? - One accepted by 2020. Fair and good enough they took it in a nearly 90% "Yes" vote.
No intervention needed from the outside. THAT is the truth. They solved their own problems.
Sour grapes and trying to shift responsibility on everyone else is defeatest.
    Keep diggin'

  • Oh goody, another rally. Is the Grim Reaper and Big Bird going to be there? Are they going to be sacrificing the women?

  • withOUT governemnt supervision or intervention if neccessary? Yaaaa!!! Let the invasion begin! Harry for Prime Minister!

  • Harry...you go tell that lame excuse to the people living in Alberta...who BTW all recieve a check and benefit from the oil they have there. How has Sudbury or the province of Ontario benefitted as being the nickle capital of the world? Ohhh and Im not NDP either...you assume too much. Stop with your nonsense buddy. The responsibilty for the resources belong to the province and government. In your world, it would make sense for foriegn companies to come into the country and immplement there policies with governemnt supervision or intervention if neccessary? Yaaaa!!! Harry for Prime Minister!

  • MAXIM ... the resources and benefits belong to the company that is willing to invest billions of dollars to get them out of the ground.

They don't "belong" to you , me, or anybody else.

Stop it with this NDP socialist nonsense.

BTW ... referring to someone as Pillup Moreless ?? Grow up.

  • First off P.M. I'm pretty sure it was Vale that initiated the media circus by posting the contract on the internet....secondly when did I say it's a private matter(I asked you why you're so involved).Speaking of intimidation if Vale had it's way all 6500 employees would be in court for one trumped up charge or another....notice all the lawsuits being thrown around whenever they start to talk about negotiating?Check this little gem out .....posted on VALE'S site "At Vale Inco,we believe that our employees should share in our success. After all,it's our employees who make us who we are.".......Vale "No new talks are scheduled"......sounds like bargaining in GOOD faith to me.....hahahahahaha!

  • PM....You said "Its a private matter between a company and a bunch of malcontent workers"..... FYI our resources and the benefits they provided belonged to all Ontarioans. What do you call a fair deal? A fair deal should include at the very least the status quo...not pay reductions. Intervention is indeed needed to preserve the standard of living that was once enjoyed by the mining industry. Anything less is treason by the governemnt.

  • After all Mini, it ain't about the issues on the bargaining table anymore.
Its about deflection, egos, greed, saving face, and blaming everyone else. When those ploys failed, it came to insults and lame intimidation tactics.
Protest all you want. This is exactly what cynni says. Its a private matter between a company and a bunch of malcontent workers. It only became a public event when 6500 chose to negotiate in the media. Assuming that Sudburians would just automatically support them.
The NDP is neck deep in this to secure their funds from union dues. The other parties are rightfully steering clear. As demonstrated with your own USWA 2020, intervention is NOT needed to reach a Fair Deal!

  • nice to see P.M. chime in with his usual anti union rhetoric.....why does it affect YOU so much if YOU'RE not involved?Nothing else going on in your little world, maybe volunteer at the hospital...then your petty gripes will look ridiculous compared to what the patients are going through!Just a thought seeing as you have so much time on your hands....

  • They plan to “deliver a message regarding the use of scabs in our community and the lack of government involvement,.......just wait...stand your ground and you'll get more government involvement than you guys can handle...a sure fire way to get somebody involved.

  • What a horrible post bidzey, and the first one on the board, how embarrassing...

  • You mean hot dog stands?

  • Dont quite understand that one either

  • What exactly are you babbling about?

  • What about the other BBQ stands in the City, are you scabbing business out of them? Works both ways...
