Distance and online learning in rural northern Ontario communities is on the rise.

Contact North and Elearnnetwork.ca noted a 61 per cent increase in course registration in winter 2010, according to a press release from Contact North.

During the 2009-2010 school year, they helped more than 17,600 students pursue college, university and school board courses.

Contact North has 112 centres in Ontario, many in remote regions, where students can study and take advantage of its equipment and services to help them complete any registered program from Ontario schools.

“Ontario's distance education and training network is responding to the call for action by the government of Ontario to use distance and online learning to increase Ontario's post-secondary attainment rate from its current 62 per cent to 70 per cent and to add 20,000 students this year,” Maxim Jean-Louis, president and CEO of Contact North, stated.

Contact North offers over 10,000 online courses in over 800 online programs via elearnnetwork.ca.
