Sudbury Speaks - Will HST create more jobs?

May 10, 2010- 9:59 AM

By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff

On July 1, Ontario residents will stop paying the GST and PST, and will start paying a harmonized sales tax (HST).

The provincial government said the switch to HST will make it easier for businesses to set up shop in Ontario, and therefore create jobs.

Northern Life wants to know if you think HST will create more jobs in Greater Sudbury?

Watch Northern Life's video to see the reactions of some residents.

  • The only thing this ridiculous tax is going to create is a financial burden for us consumers because its going to cost us thousands of dollars more a year in additional taxes! Maybe we should have all thrown a big temper tantrum like the First Nations did...........obviously, that scare tactic worked as the government is now backing down on the HST exemption rules........

  • As far as the implementation of the HST creating jobs....well...that's just nonsense and we all know it is.

  • As far as the implementation of the HST creating jobs....well...that's just nonsense and we all know it is.

  • I just wish the First Nations would quit pretending they are protesting the HST for all Ontarians.

The threatened Birch Island Highway 6 blockade and the Sault Ste. Marie rail blockade has nothing to do with the unfairness of the HST and the increase in taxes the people of Ontario will have to pay making it harder for seniors and everyone in general to make ends meet.

As usual the rest of us will be held hostage by the First Nations peoples to further their own agenda....which in this case is exemption from paying tax at the point of sale.

At least they get the taxes back...nobody else gets it back.

The authorities should step in and if necessary forcibly remove any blockades of provincial highways and railways and arrest the urban terrorists responsible. If anyone else tried to shutdown highways or railways they'd be hauled away.

I don't want the HST either, but I don't want it because of the financial hardship it will impart on the whole population and the blatant $2 billion tax grab....not because its an inconvenience.

  • ~IF YOU FEEL THAT THE HST IS NOT RIGHT~ PLEASE JOIN YOUR FELLOW FIRST NATIONS AND RALLY AGAINST THE HST, AS ONTARIANS, WE MUST STAND UP TOGETHER FOR OUR RIGHTS AND OUR FAMILIES, EACHOTHER!!!

  • ~FIRST NATIONS ARE FIGHTING SO HARD BECAUSE THIS IS ONE OF OUR MANY RIGHTS BEING TAKEN FROM US, **HST WONT CREATE JOBS**, IT WILL LESSEN THEM AND CREATE MORE HOMELESS PEOPLE, THE HST IS JUST SAD AND COMPLETELY IGNORED THE RIGHTS OF FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE AND THEIR HARDSHIPS THAT ALREADY EXIST FOR THEM!!!~

  • Sorry, I meant recovery.

  • The only thing this will do is put the brakes on the gecovery of the economy, more for hydro, gas etc...= more cash strapped families= less spending, the Government thinks were all all a bunch of stupid Idiots, this should be voted on and not just passed at some political theif so they can give themselves raises and laugh at us while we struggle to make ends meet, come on people make some noise about this protest, it will cost us a lot.

  • Wow,nice to see you guys take a break from calling vale workers 'greedy'.

    Guess its the government's turn

  • only a policticians think it will create jobs because they are on another planet. look you put 8% on the price of gas, thats the biggest economic driver of inflation.think big buisness will pass on savings not likely never have done never will. how do we create jobs by increasing taxes?. you create jobs by reducing taxes. look all this spin about HST is smoke and mirrors

  • Sudburian, that is a little closer to the truth of this all, that is for sure!

  • This is going to create a LOT of new jobs....
    Take me as an example,

During the days I'll work my Technician work, and at night I'll work as a cabbie or something just to compensate for that extra 8% on my hydro, water, gas, gas, etc.

  • As for businesses hiring more people, the only time this would happen is if there was an increase in customers which the HST won't do. Does not make sense. I work in a business that did not collect the PST because we offer services, not goods. So for all those who get counsselling, massage, and other such health services, they will be paying an extra 8% for these services. I've read all the literature the governments have released and even with the rebates the government is promising, I don't see how people are going to save money.

  • it hasn't been properly advertised because you can't sell a tax grab, you just implement it & then tell us how wonderfully we will all benefit from it.
    YEAH RIGHT!!!!

  • yep, southend I get that for sure...
and yet they are still the only ones making a stink about it. us non-natives are just ready & willing to stay bend over, aren't we...

  • sandman. In my opinion the efforts of First Nations people is completely self serving. They could care less that non-natives will be taxed. Their only concern is that they will be taxed. They only mention "all of us" in their comments so to help polarize the general population to their point of view.

  • Wow, Create Jobs, eh?
    !!!BULLCRAP!!!
It's like they aren't even trying to come up with a believable story anymore.

I hope our First nations peoples have more luck with this HST at least they are putting forth an effort to stop this!!!

  • This is a joke! How can a silly value-added tax that will cost more, create more jobs? Ironic as hell!

  • HST will not create any new jobs. It is needed to pay for spending ourselves out of a recession.

The liberal government is right in that it will save business money. But they are dead wrong to think, these businesses will pass on the savings to customers.

Just another cash grab, by government who has no idea of the concept of fiscal responsibility. These so called (temporary) tax breaks are used just to soften the blow. And will disappear.
