City of Greater Sudbury employees belonging to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4705 have voted in favour of a new collective agreement.

Four voting sessions were held at the Garson Arena June 23. The union has 1,300 members.

“The sessions were busy, especially the 5:30 p.m. session,” Steve Speck, Local 4705 president, said.

He said 78 per cent of the city's inside workers and 70 percent of the city's outside workers voted to accept the contract.

About 700 out of the total membership cast their ballots, he added.

The offer is not a done deal yet, as it must still be ratified by city council.

Speck said he could not provide details of the collective agreement, including the length of the contract, until it is approved by city council.

Speck said there were “heated discussions” among the workers attending the ratification meetings June 23.

“We had a good debate,” Speck said.

In the last collective agreement, five years ago, Speck said 80 per cent of inside workers and 68 per cent of outside workers voted it favour of the contract.
