Province gives $36K in funding to local organizations

Twelve organizations in Greater Sudbury dedicated to raising public awareness and helping women escape abuse are the recipients of $36,000 in provincial funding through the violence against women prevention initiative.

The announcement was made June 4 by Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci. Each of the organizations are receiving $3,000 to help raise public awareness, train staff and offer information, workshops and shelter victims of domestic abuse, who are "overwhelmingly women," according to a press release from the province.

The following organizations are recipients of the funding:

  • Canadian Red Cross Society, Sudbury Branch
  • Centre de counselling de Sudbury
  • Le Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury
  • Le Centre Victoria pour femmes
  • Elizabeth Fry Society
  • Greater Sudbury Coalition to End Violence Against Women
  • St. David Catholic School
  • Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association
  • Sudbury Regional Hospital, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Treatment
  • Sudbury Sexual Assault Crisis Centre
  • Sudbury Women's Centre des
  • YWCA Genevra

In 2009-2010, the initiative provided 94 organizations in northern Ontario with a total of $280,000 for programs, resources and equipment. The province also runs the Assaulted Women's Helpline, a multi-lingual, 24/7 toll-free crisis phone service, as part of the initiative. The service is available by phone at 1-866-863-0511.
