Twelve organizations in Greater Sudbury dedicated to raising public awareness and helping women escape abuse are the recipients of $36,000 in provincial funding through the violence against women prevention initiative.
The announcement was made June 4 by Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci. Each of the organizations are receiving $3,000 to help raise public awareness, train staff and offer information, workshops and shelter victims of domestic abuse, who are "overwhelmingly women," according to a press release from the province.
The following organizations are recipients of the funding:
- Canadian Red Cross Society, Sudbury Branch
- Centre de counselling de Sudbury
- Le Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury
- Le Centre Victoria pour femmes
- Elizabeth Fry Society
- Greater Sudbury Coalition to End Violence Against Women
- St. David Catholic School
- Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association
- Sudbury Regional Hospital, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Treatment
- Sudbury Sexual Assault Crisis Centre
- Sudbury Women's Centre des
- YWCA Genevra
In 2009-2010, the initiative provided 94 organizations in northern Ontario with a total of $280,000 for programs, resources and equipment. The province also runs the Assaulted Women's Helpline, a multi-lingual, 24/7 toll-free crisis phone service, as part of the initiative. The service is available by phone at 1-866-863-0511.
