PET scan advocate Sam Bruno dies

A man who advocated first to make Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans available to the general public, and then to bring one of the machines to Greater Sudbury, died July 15 at the Maison Vale Hospice after a long battle with cancer.

A man who advocated first to make Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans available to the general public, and then to bring one of the machines to Greater Sudbury, died July 15 at the Maison Vale Hospice after a long battle with cancer.

Sam Bruno, 55, is survived by his wife, Cheryl, children Christina, David and Christopher, stepchildren Trisha and Jody, and his mother, Rosina. He is predeceased by his father, Eugenio.

“Born in Sudbury and raised in Gatchell, Sam's priority in life was his loving family,” his obituary stated.

“He was employed by Sealy Canada in sales and marketing. Sam was a great advocate for bringing a PET scan to Sudbury. Sam will be remembered for his extraordinary strength, character and courage. He was a giving and caring person who always put everyone before him. Sam always lived his life to the fullest.”

He is resting at the Lougheed Funeral Home. Visitation will take place between 2 and 5 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. on July 18. A funeral mass will take place at St. Anthony's Church in Sudbury July 19 at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Sam Bruno PET Scanner Fund SRH.
