Scrapping of mandatory long-form census an 'ideological decision'

Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle put forward a motion in the federal industry committee July 27 which calls for the “immediate reinstatement of the mandatory long-form portion of the 2011 census,” according to a press release put out by the MP's office.

Gravelle's motion passed with a minor amendment.

There has been controversy recently about the federal government's plans to make filling out the long-form portion of the census optional.

Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement appeared before the industry committee this week, and defended the plan.

Munir Sheikh, who stepped down as the head of Statistics Canada because he disagreed with the government's plans, also appeared before the industry committee.

“Expert after expert made it perfectly clear that Minister Clement’s ideological decision, made without any consultation, and against the recommendation of Statistics Canada, would seriously hinder Canadians’ capacity to collect and analyse critical data on issues affecting countless communities in Canada,” Gravelle, who acts at the NDP's deputy industry critic, said in a press release.

“Tony Clement and this Conservative government have manufactured a crisis in the middle of the summer, trying to avoid any Parliamentary accountability.

“The NDP is prepared to continue hearings on this issue if the government refuses to provide necessary documentation demanded by committee members, or if it refuses to change its decision.”

Gravelle's motion reads as follows.

“That pursuant to Standing Order 108 and the committee’s study of the long-form portion of the Census, this Committee notes that, the long-form census is a vital tool for good policy-making and the decision to amend it was short-sighted and carried out without consultation. Therefore, the government should immediately reinstate the mandatory nature of the long-form census. And, that this committee tables this report upon resumption of Parliament.”

  • I think the current census method should be re-vamped a bit, and the results made public. Just like anything that is funded with tax dollars.

  • so if it doesn't benefit the people then the census should be scrapped altogether.

I'd rather have no census than a misleading innacurate one.

  • If we had government transparency as well as corporate transparency, we wouldn't have half of the corruption that is going on now in this country. As an example the city of Sudbury commissioned a study on the flooding in the Mountain Street area. The problem with that study is they will not make it public. Secret government dealings should not exist. The tax payers are paying for the report, yet the tax payer will not get to see the results of the reports findings.

The same goes with the long form Census... it will never be made public. Only the elitist so called government experts will manipulate the data for their rich cronie friends to get richer.

  • Not at all. Gravelle is not advocating spying on citizens at all. He is arguing that an accurate and representative census is required to make good government policy.

Apologies for flying off the handle at you Lovefights - I also beleive in keeping the gov't from meddling in our lives and its sad to see canada being turined into the world's biggest nanny state. But this is an issue that requires more attention than its getting.

Once they start quoting innacurate and unrepresentative census stats to make policies that effect and possibly impact your life for the worse then I bet my bottom dollar there'll be some complaints!

  • rightofcentre... did you even read my comments?

Your saying the same things I am saying???

Keep the intrusive government out of my life... period.

  • Mr. Gravelle is gravely wrong. His so called experts are government bureaucrats who want to spy on the privacy of Canadians. I have a comment for you Mr. Gravelle ... how dare you threatened me with jail term for not telling you how many bedrooms I have in my home.

I tried to find out from statistic Canada on how many deaths and births we had in Canada in 2009 and it wasn't available to the general public. You know where you can stick your stats reports.

  • love fights - your avatar sums you up pretty well.

The average Canadian neanderthal who takes what the government says without questioning it and falls right into their well planned trap. Open your eyes and start questioning EVERYTHING our government is trying to do. If you think the gov't are doing things to benefit the general public then you are a monkey indeed.

This census change will be used to steer gov't policy away from the needs of the general public as the census data WIL NOT be representative of the people.

If you beleieve that the slimeball Clement has your best interests at heart then that's your own problem, even if he did save a drowning woman... the fact is many canadians are "drowning" due to the economic crisis brought about by government suported big banks in the states.

  • The government made the census so ridiculous and intrusive and now they want to abolish the long form mandatory census and make it voluntary?!

I don't buy this government BS one bit. They are not concerned about our privacy at all. The Census drives so much gov't policy and is used to justify new laws etc...

If its voluntary who are the people that are going to fill out the census? The poor disenfranchized and disadvantaged people of Canada? I doubt it.

The very fact that the census is used to drive so much gov't policy should mean that our gov't does everything it possibly can to make it representative of the poeple.
