The sale of the site of the former St. Joseph's health centre is now complete.

“The transaction for the sale of 700 Paris Street was finalized yesterday, July 28, 2010 and the property is now under new ownership,” Sister Shirley Anderson, general superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph, said.

The Sisters of St. Joseph, owners of the property, sold the property after they learned the province would not pay to cover the cost of demolishing the former hospital, the former Sister general superior, Bonnie MacLellan, said in June.

They accepted an offer from Panoramic Properties on May 31. The closure of the sale was confirmed by Anderson on July 29.

In a statement to the community June 22, published in Northern Life, MacLellan said the province made no commitment to fund the demolition costs. They said the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care convened a meeting regarding the demolition of the hospital on May 20.

“The provincial government made no commitment to fund demolition and indicated that if the government agreed to fund demolition, they expected the congregation to refund to the province the proceeds from the sale of the 'greenfield' site to offset demolition costs,” she said.

MacLellan said her organization did not have the funds to continue to pay the maintenance costs of the site.

Just watch now though, how many obstacles the city planning department will put in the way of the new purchaser... they will probably have them jumping through hoops!
