A house fire in Copper Cliff last night took Greater Sudbury Fire Services several hours to put out because old house was insulated with materials such as sawdust.

According to Platoon Chief Mike Valiquette, the house was anywhere from 50 to 75 years old and was an "old Inco house." Fire services used foam fire extinguishing agents to battle the blaze, since the fire had moved into the walls of the structure and would keep re-igniting, he said.

Two firefighters suffered burns while battling the blaze. One suffered first degree burns and is already back at work, Valiquette said, while the other will take some time off to recover from second degree burns.

Around 4 p.m. Aug. 16, Platoon Chief Mark Gobbo said the house "was fully engulfed" by flames when fire crews arrived around 2 p.m. Access to Diorite Street and beyond was blocked by the blaze at the corner of Rink and Union streets until around 10 p.m., when the fire was officially extinguished.

The fire completely gutted the house, leaving the three residents — a mother and two teenaged children — homeless. They were out at the time of the fire, and the Red Cross has stepped in to help them.

One firefighter rescued a kitten from the fire and returned it to the family. Investigators from the Fire Marshal's Office are expected to arrive today to start a preliminary investigation of the fire.

Duhhhhhhhhhh...the two kittens in the fire (one still missing which is sad) were playing with matches!!!!
Duhhhhhhhhh....disgruntled VALE workers wanted a new area to light their bonfires
Hello............all you need to do is talk to the young folk in Copper Cliff and have a little common sense about their buildings catching on fire and the Fire Marshall being quiet until he gets enough evidence to arrest the culprits....maybe a good thing to look back at the garage as well.

  • joy_3 how do you know the cause of the fire. According to the article the OFM office hadn't started their investigation. I know for a fact that the Fire Marshalls office would never give out information until their investigation was fully completed. Get the facts first, before you start assuming thing.

  • No house insurance, cancelled but owner unaware. Garage burns down 4 months ago (due to a LITE cigarette AND ruled accidental)-insurance pays for deplitated party shack/garage then cancels insurance for delapitated house. House was a tinderbox ready to go up in smoke (with another lite cigarette accidently left in the house) with cracked windows and doors. The house should have been condemned years ago and it is too bad that children had to be living there for past 10 years. Real story to come out soon, it will be interesting. Meantime maybe the community can all get together to raise funds for this single mom and her two teenagers to pay rent in a decent apartment or house.

  • "For the safety of the village there should be an immediate investigation into Joy_3." - well put.

  • bcarefulwutuwish4 your comment was well said :) and joy_3 nobody likes you so just can it already...

  • I would be trembling living in this arson raged bedroom community with the rift raft that have been moving in droves to this town with high criminal activity.

  • For the safety of the village there should be an immediate investigation into Joy_3.

  • For the safety of the village of Copper Cliff there should be an immediate investigation between the 2 fires, house and garage in a short period of time. If someone is playing with fire they should be arrested and sent to prision for a long period of time. This family could have been at the mercy of an arsonist during the night and all we can do is be thankful no one was in the house. There are alot of bad criminal elements hanging around that town with its old houses being put into subisidized apartments for the crack heads and low lifes.

  • Whether or not it's a mansion or a shack, it's somebody's shelter their roof a place to call "home", and we all work very hard to keep our homes financially it's not easy in this city with the economy the way it is, You seem to forget that joy_3 and believe it or not i think the firemarshall knows how to do his job better than you do so have some respect, stop assuming.Read the sudbury star young children didn't live there a woman and two teenagers did so get a grip.

  • That house was already a fire trap, not inhabitable to any family never mind young children. It is a known fact that the burnt down garage was used by all the local hooligans for party time. It is a known fact that the Fire Marschall will now being doing an investigation. I hope they find the culprit whether it be a stranger, bad friend or resident of Copper Cliff.

  • Joy rarely spreads any joy.

  • Joy's posts are very amusing. Something definitely isn't right, on a mental level.

  • not to mention, all the old homes in copper cliff are completely out dated with the worst electrical systems in the city. So, house fires, I'm surprised more of them don't happen in that little village. And there are, many worse homes in copper cliff, than that one.

  • Um. joy, you're story is a little off. The garage did not burn down after a party, and there was no one home during the day this house caught up in flames. So please, don't start bs when you don't even know the truth of the events, or the people who even live there! I consider them my family, and there is no way they would burn their own home down.

  • OK the garage of this crappy, worst looking house in Copper Cliff burnt down last month after a local party? Any connection that this house now burns down in a month after the garage? HELLO Fire Marshall!
