LU hosts conference focusing on languages

More than 200 people from around the world are at Laurentian University this week for Language and Territory, an international conference focusing on languages along with the territories they occupy.

The conference runs from Aug. 29-Sept. 3, and will address issues such as cohabitation and language conflicts, language as an identity, literature, and theatre.

Canada’s Commissioner of Official Languages, Graham Fraser, is the conference’s Honorary Chair. He will be joined by language commissioners for Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, New Brunswick, and Ontario.

Some of the topics being addressed include:

-A Community On Stage: Italiese in Contemporary Theatre
-Being Young and Francophone in Alberta
-The Language of Racism: Aboriginal Student’s Experience in the Postsecondary Classroom
-The Impact of Language Policy on National Language

  • Never under estimate government officials' ability to create conferences where they can waste time. Spend our taxes, and get a vacation in to boot.

    Notice how there isn't one discussion on the erosion of the English language? What about a topic entitled:
    "Being young and English in Quebec"

    Bottom line here is if you're English, your culture, heritage, contribution to building this country, and language rights take a back seat. All to appease the fringe votes and keep the french happy.

  • What a waste of taxpayers dollars. Are you saying there are 5 official languages now? Sweet Jesus, where does it end?
