EastLink Ontario business development manager Marc Serré, filed his papers for the position of Greater Sudbury mayor Aug. 16.

“This city needs new leadership,” Serré said. “We have a great city. Let's grow it.”

He will take on incumbent mayor John Rodriguez, Ward 8 Coun. Ted Callaghan, arts promoter Derek Young, retail businessman Zack Gauthier and citizen Ed Pokonzie in the Oct. 25 city election.

Serré said he will make extensive use of Facebook and Twitter during his campaign.

“My campaign will have the most intensive social media campaign for a mayor ever in Canada.”

Serré has managed business development at EastLink Ontario since 2007. He was a city councillor for the municipality of West Nipissing in 2006/2007 and was a school board trustee for Conseil Scolaire Catholique du Nouvel-Ontario for five years, between 1999 and 2004.

Serré has made a number of presentations at international disabilities conferences in the United States and Canada and was a regional director of the Canadian Hearing Society for eight years between 1996 and 2004.

He is active in physical endurance events, completing the Toronto full marathon in 2005 and 2006 and most recently the North Bay triathlon in 2007 and the Bala Falls triathlon in 2009.

Young and Gauthier have also said the city needs a new fresh face in the mayor’s position. Rodriguez said his performance has meant good economic news for the city. Callaghan has said Rodriguez has not consulted the current council enough in major decisions like the St. Joseph hospital sale.

  • Either way... no one will be happy.

    Like your vote even counts....phfahahahahaha
Its gonna be Zack simply cause his resource compared to the others are second to none... Maybe will get a 24h grocery store like the rest of the world. ottawa toronto of course have one but north bay and the soo have one too. Would that be a congestion helper. See two birds get stoned. Big picture people, BIG PICTURE

  • I've experienced EastLink business service....rather lack of service.....no thanks Marc Serré. City hall is bad enough without puting this guy in

  • Oh god, an eastlink guy behind the wheel, well be screwed. The city will start to use sub-standard contractors to do all their work. When something breaks or something requires swift action it will take 6-8 weeks for him to do something about it. And city services will just stop working for no reason at any given time without any explaination from anyone. Good luck with this venture!

  • I certainly hope the Rodriguez does not get elected again to be the Mayor.I will not vote for him.

  • @SouthofTen, when the roads are fixed, we all lose weight and stores are open 27/7 maybe you will give us a second chance.

  • @Resident: I'm impressed. You pay attention to detail quite well. Yes I am here for three weeks (leaving friday, Thank God!)

Though your "fair city" didn't impress me, I was glad to have an opportunity to visit. It kind of changed some of my opinions on things back home. Things that I may have taken for granted. Glad to see you read my blog! Take Care!

  • Southoften, I thought you weren't from Sudbury and only spent three weeks here. How the hell do you know how the city runs and who is cooked. hmmm

  • The $hit pool is getting full we better strain it before it over flows and causes a $hit slide that will cover this entire community.

  • ow .. is certainly not enough.

Construction bylaws need to be changed so that we a reduction in traffic congestion on the main routes. Also a i think we should fix our back street properly before we invest in extentions of mailey drive which is costing the city a stupid amount of money. I also think that the development plans need to be relooked at to save costs.

We need change, and we need direction ... the city has accrued a massive debt because council was unable to control the books properly and they ran into running spending with "ghost projects" .. these projects are jobs where you have 5 workers present but the contractor gets paid for 15 .. ten of which are nobodies.

Also the recent strike concerns with the Union/Vale. What is done is done. The mayor should not have involved his 2 cents and neither should council. However, with respect to the workers, i think that if our city keeps relying on mines as their main backbone of local industry ...without a safety net industry to save itself in case of mass layoffs or strikes ...... our city needs to find something new to rely on. I would suggest massive green energy projects so that we are ahead of the game and profitable ... and with that the city grows and progresses.

Maybe i should run for mayor .... people in this city want to be heard, and listening to constituents is the most important key to the city's success.

  • To be honest, someone needs to step up to the plate and deal with the real issues this city is facing.

The city keeps complaining about sourcing revenues for itself but never do anything about it.

Like really .... we have so much land mass in Sudbury, that we could build wind farms away from residential areas and sell the hydro back to hydro companies at a really decent rate .... and this could also lead to lower hydro costs for locals who want to actually want to see their savings.

Another thing is our city is attracting scientists and research from across the globe because we have resources here for them .... like why isn't anyone raising the bar even more to help this city? ..Not to mention that we have more schools in Sudbury than most city's across our province ... what is Sudbury council really commited in ensuring that everyone benefits?

Then we have the sale of this hospital that nobody seems to know what to do with and have sideliners whining about city official plans and wanting to reserve that property as heritage ...... Look it ppl, we all know the mayor and his council screwed up .... now, the deal is done and we cant do nothing about it .... but yet the city council want to play hardline about the zoning and we have lobbyists demanding too much ..... the fix is simple .... all of Sudburians want to see change and see our city progress .... i say why not let the developper do what he wants to the land .... i would also suggest that the parking lot be sold to the developper or be used in the Bell Park development plan and expand the Park. The city collects the taxes from the new property owners .. so in the end we all win.

The other concerning issue is the current crime rate in our city that not one candidate is raising a concern about .... i mean come on .. we have drug stores being robbed, people being assaulted and stabbed .... its out of control really and the Police definitely need more support from the city ... what we have n

  • Really doesn't matter who runs or who gets in. This city is the biggest toilet in Ontario and the people in it are to cooked to know what to do about it.

  • Marc Serre is the one who let go of fifty jobs from Persona Internet in Sudbury to bring this 1/2 ass company from the east coast that doesn't even have service most of the time. He is an absolute disgrace to all hard working people in Sudbury. His campaign wont even be shown as the Eastlink cable company is down most of the time. LOL

  • Well, i just want to say something here about Marc's comment on having the most intensive social media campaign ..

Marc, i just want to say that i currently hold the biggest social media network in all of ontario which is worldwide ....

I say, bring your network on ... and we'll see who i back up .... bring it :)
