Fundraisers organized by Sudbury's Pakistani community

By: Heidi Ulrichsen - Sudbury Northern Life Staff

After hearing stories about the devastation in Pakistan caused by widespread flooding, Gina Rasool said she knew she had to do something to help.

The owner of the Pizza Pizza locations on Elm Street and Lasalle Boulevard will donate $1 from every regular large pizza and 50 cents from every special large pizza towards an expedition to help flood victims.

Those who donate money or supplies for the flood victims will receive a free slice of pizza.

According to the United Nations, roughly four million people have been left homeless by the flooding in Pakistan.

The UN has, thus far, raised less than half of its $460 million aid target. Canada itself has pledged up to $33 million.

Rasool said the fundraiser at her restaurants will continue for at least the next three weeks, and possibly longer. She said she hopes to raise $10,000 through pizza sales and donations.

Rasool and a small group of Canadians plan to head to Pakistan in late October or early November to provide aid themselves in four villages — Nushera, Muzsegar, Sakhar and Rajampur.

“You need to understand that the women can't go out to get the supplies. In the lineups (for aid handouts) you'll only see men.”

Gina Rasool,
local business owner

The expedition members will pay for their own plane tickets to Pakistan, and then buy aid supplies in the country.
Anyone interested in joining the expedition or who wants more information about donating to the cause is asked to phone Rasool at 705-561-4661 or 705-524-6074.

The business owner said the expedition will focus on helping the most vulnerable — women, children and the elderly.

“It's a male-oriented country,” Rasool, who came to Canada 12 years ago from the city of Faisalbad, located in Pakistan's Punjab region, said.

“Women have no say. You need to understand that the women can't go out to get the supplies. In the lineups (for aid handouts) you'll only see men.”

Rasool said she is also trying to plan a dance in aid of the flood victims for sometime in September, although she has not yet pinned down all of the details.

The Pakistan Canada Foundation is also planning a fundraiser to help the flood victims. A dinner will be held at the Polish Combatants Hall Aug. 28 starting at 7:30 p.m.

The majority of the 200 tickets to the event — which cost $30 each — have already been sold.

However, the organizers say that even if people can't attend the dinner, they're still welcome to make cash donations to the cause.

Aamir Khan, a member of the Pakistan Canada Foundation, said the organization hopes to raise $6,000 for the flood victims.

He said the money will likely be donated to a large non-profit aid organization, although they haven't yet decided which one.
Khan said his family lives in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, and has not been affected by the floods.

However, he said his brother has told him about the poor living conditions many in the country are experiencing. Khan said his family in Pakistan helped to collect money in their neighbourhood for the flood victims.

Rabia Iqtidar, another member of the Pakistan Canada Association, said her family is from Lehore, in Pakistan's Punjab region.

She said the region has not yet been hit by flooding, but preparations are being made, just in case flood waters head towards the city.

“They are trying to make dams and things like that to change the direction of the flood,” Iqtidar said.

“There are lots of villages and things that need to be emptied so that if they do change the direction of the flood, nobody else would suffer.”

Tickets to the dinner event or information about making donations are available by going to the Sudbury Multicultural & Folk Art Association, the Little India Restaurant, Petro Canada and Shell Canada, or by phoning 705-561-1150, 705-507-8889, 705-586-2332, 705-523-4174, 705-920-2118, 705-507-7918 or 705-207-0393.

Those who want to support the Canadian Red Cross in its flood relief efforts can make donations at Bank of Montreal (BMO) branches across Canada until Sept. 17, or by going to www.redcross.ca.

  • Slick marketing Chris. A decent price point and stunts like this.
    That's how.
If you want to send 100% of your cash to a deserving charity (not a corrupt country), and cut out the profit to a pizza owner, make your own pizza at home for $5. Then cut a cheque for $10 directly to a charity instead.
Both are far more healthy for you.

  • Never understood why Pizza Pizza is as big as they are. The full size pizza's you get from there are overpriced and taste like cardboard. The slices, I'll admit I stop in sometimes if I'm hungry and too lazy to cook, or if I'm stumbling home from a bar at 2am.

  • Believe it tiger.
Look at the free publicity this 'feel good' item garners. The company is front and centre with 90% of the profit still going to the store. Shared by the conglomerate and the owner. A buck is nothing. The same advertising would cost thousands of dollars. They dupe in a few extra sales, look like concerned world citizens, and laugh at the profits.

Bottom line is Pakistan is linked to funding and protecting terrorists. Think before you send any money to any charity. When the money squeeze hits these crooked nations, they depend on Canada to pony up. Time for them to divert their dirty money to their people. Instead of killing innocent people and our troops.
A bitter pizza to be eating for sure.

  • Top Gun, I cant believe this Joy woman is using a tragedy like the flood to promote her business online. Its pathetic and I would have never thought anyone would be that low to actually try to make a buck out of something like that.

  • Pizza pizza sucks big time. Seems like some of their toppings include old dirty sweat socks and birdcage droppings. Gross.

  • I don't believe they care about Pakistan. It's just free advertisment for pizza pizza. They will probably suck alot of people in.

  • This is ridiculous! How much more do they want?!? The whole week, the news on TV has done nothing but cover this crap! WE DO NOT LIVE IN PAKISTAN!!! WE LIVE AND PAY TAXES HERE IN CANADA!! DON'T LIKE IT---LEAVE!! For crying out loud! We have children dying in Canadian streets to poverty like situations! We here in Canada, have families and the elderly living below the poverty lines! We have hundreds of people in Northern Canada living under boiled water advisories and have been for well over 12 years!!! Gina Rasool came to Canada 12 years ago! Thanks to the Canadian tax payers, she has enjoyed the many comforts that are provided to people of her heritage! Free education, free housing when she got here, and money to start and run her own business! Now she wants Canadians to pour more money into Pakistan!?! $33 million is more than enough! You and others like you want to help your country, go back home and help clean up!! Take your friends, Aamir Khan, Rabia Iqtidar, your family and the rest with you!! How dare you ask for more money!!! If you think this is racist, well where is your charity for the Canadians that are paying for your way in this Canadian life?!? Who is racist now? I have never, and I mean NEVER heard any of the immigrants that come here and get $2400/month, free education/housing, and start up fees for businesses ever go public and say THANK YOU to the tax paying Canadians that got them to where they are today!! $33million from Canada, $460million from the UN and much more from other countries!! Go see your neighborhood buddies, the Taliban and Tamil Tigers! Perhaps the Sultan will feel sorry for Pakistan! If the shoes were on the other feet, would Pakistan, Afgahnistan, etc, would they run to send us money to help rebuild our lives? Answer that one!!

  • I agree with TopGun and Sudsman. I object to the Canadian government constantly spending our borrowed tax dollars in places like Pakistan, Haiti and other places. These people need to take responsibility for themselves, elect responsible governments and be hard working and less slovenly. As far as Pakistan is concerned their government is corrupt, funds the Taliban and advocates the murder of our troops, trades and sells nuclear technology to terrorist regimes. As far as I am concerned we should not accept immigrants from this unstable part of the world. Look what recently happened with the Tamils. They have taken over our hospitals and get priority care and legal Canadians are told to wait. We should turn their ships away and close our doors to these criminals and drains on our economy.

  • Correct me If I'm wrong..But wasn't this one of the country's that was dancing in the street's when the tower's came tumbling down?

  • "The expedition members will pay for their own plane tickets to Pakistan" Bull s... There will be no expedition!
This article is a pizza Ad. plain and simple. Don't get sucked in by these losers.

  • "The expedition members will pay for their own plane tickets to Pakistan, and then buy aid supplies in the country." ?

Why do the aid supplies need to be bought? If there are supplies there that can assist the victims, shouldn't they be provided free of charge along with the supplies delivered from around the world?

    Just saying?

  • Yup, Topgun is a racist alright.

Pakistani automatically means terrorist? Yup. Racist.

Anyone reading this who came to Canada from another country - don't mind the resident rednecks. There are a few in town, but not everyone is so ignorant.

  • joy, Your a wingnut right? You keep promoting pizza pizza, so their has to be something in it for you.
I tried pizza pizza and I'll never do that to myself again.
If you can't understand that the Federal Gov. will match taxpayers donations with taxpayers tax money, you need your head read. If Canadians were smart, they would just shut off the money tap. The people in need won't see it anyway. Pizza Pizza should do okay though.

  • How wonderful the Federal government has announced they will match dollar for every dollar raised by Canadian citizens.
Keep in mind, this is a great incentive just like our own local PIZZA PIZZA owners here in Sudbury.
This money will to go to one of the biggest humanitarion endevours in our life time. Think of all the innocent children that will be saved, this is a God send.

  • I see the Feds just anounced they will match dollar for every dollar donated to the Packistan flood victims.
Lets see. How will this work? The taxpayers in Canada will make donations and the government will match it with taxpayers dollars. Amazing. Keep in mind the government doesn't have any money, only taxpayers money, which they are pretty liberal with. How much of this money will go to the corupt Pakistan government, Taliban and Al Queida?

  • Hope everyone contributes to any chartitable agency for PAKISTAN, OR our own local PIZZA PIZZA which is the best in the North. Way to go guys and gals from PIZZA PIZZA. All of you are the best and our hearts are with you.

  • Joy, cut the crap. Its pretty obvious you own a franchaise of that pizza joint and your looking for free advertising. Why else would you cry out tears of sorrow for the victims of the flood then on another line spew how great the pizza tastes and how everyone should run out and buy one. There is no substitute. If you werent so pitiful, I would be laughing right now. Lets all just be thankful Joy doesnt own a bar in town. She would be plugging getting out and getting hammered so she can cash in on the action.

  • joy, If they are so poor, how is it they have the atomic bomb? Be aware, I will be visited to pay for my fathers sins.
You my dear you need to get your head read. Pakistan harbours and finances terrorists. It was admitted by their president/leader and he made threats as well to the West.
If you want to hitch your bleeding heart wagon to these donkeys, be my guest. Harper already made my donation, without my consent.

  • Failure to rescue human beings at this very basic level, regardless of excuses, defines whatever else we do in that region. This overwhelming disaster demands whatever resources needed to save lives and hope.
Babies and children are dying and I can assure you they have nothing to do with supplying any terrorist organization.
I'll answer the moron Top Gun's question. Because babies and children are dying and I can assure you they have nothing to do with supplying those terrorists. Not that all of 100 million Pakistani adults are supporters of terrorism or prejudiced
20 million people are facing disease and death. Do you think now is the time for political score settling? There will be plenty of time for that later. These people were already the poorest of the poorest in Pakistan (sometimes living on less than $1 a day). They had nothing before and now they have lost even family members and what little they had. They had no say in how their government spent the money. I pose the question to racist bigots, why would you punish the disenfranchised victim.
Please let us get past blaming ordinary people for the bad actions of a few leaders and rebels. Ordinary people's lives are being wiped out. These are lives with no cushion - hard lives already - in many many cases. We should be striving to out of compassion - intelligence. There's no better long-term remedy for bitter violence than courageous generosity. And: It's so easy to judge another country when you're home in a comfortable life. It's like watching someone work as you watch over their shoulder - it's so easy to see their mistakes, isn't it? Try to take the worker's place, yourself - and you'll discover that the reality of making things function on a steady basis over the long term is hard, even when the work seems simple or obvious - the need for sustained effort leads to many natural errors of judgment and action. The best thing we can do to help us all - al

  • True there TopGun.
The average price for a large pizza there is about $14. Meaning they are putting a puny buck towards the corrupt Pakistan government's flood relief.
This free publicity makes the shop look all humanitarian. In the end they are raking in big profits on the sales. A dollar is nothing compared to the free advertising and extra sales they'll scoop up here.

Bottom line? If you want to give to any charity (and this one that supports a terrorist government isn't worthy) cut out the middle man's profits and cut a cheque directly to the source.
Don't be buying pizza where 90% of the profit still goes to the owner lining their pockets. Scam indeed.

  • I know where I won't be buying pizza. I won't support a scam and that's what I believe this is.

  • There's no way one dime should go to the corrupt and terrorist supporting country of Pakistan.
Recent leaked military documents exposed that Pakistan is protecting and sending funds and weapons to the Taliban.

Terrorist sympathizers that secretly support those that are responsible for killing our troops. – Now they have the gall to ask Canada, and other NATO countries for money? Try using your own domestic cash properly and the millions sent to the Taliban first!

Bottom line is Canada and her allies should send over aid and leave it protected on the runway. Give Pakistan 48 hours to prove they have no connections to terrorist organizations, and it’s all yours with our blessing. If not?

We take off and burn the aid. Then put NATO planes in the sky blocking aid until they capitulate or the people turn on the corrupt government.
Sorry folks, regardless of the propaganda, Pakistan has billions of dollars. They have to make a choice now on what is most important. And until they do what’s right. Not one dime of our democratic cash should go there.

No funds for you. That's not racist or hateful. Thats common sense.

  • Good way to double the pizza business. How much will go to the motherland? Who knows? They could tell us anything. Pakistan is a corupt country and any money sent will probably end up in someones pocket and won't help the people in need. Do I trust these Taliban supporters? Not on your life.

  • Well Joy_3, it seems I comment on a lot of your posts. So here I go again. Yes we should contribute to the flood victims, they are in great need of help. However, I don't agree that our government should be held accountable since they aren't mother nature and they didn't cause the flooding.

  • Kudos. Not only is it a great cause, but the service at your Pizza Pizza last night was beyond reproach.

I can't wait for the fundraiser.

  • We as a community should all be contributing to this most devastating catastrophe. I hope all PIZZA shops in Sudbury match what is being done by PIZZA PIZZA in contributions from their customer orders. I hope nobody buys those pizza slices in the hospital or charitable events that is brought from the outside unless they contribute to this cause. This devastation in Pakistan is bigger than the big tsunami and earthquake in Haitii combined. We must all contribute and demand our government be held accountable also is contributing dollar for dollar what is being raised by all citizens of Canada.
