Union leader one of 'fired nine,' facing criminal charges

By: Heidi Ulrichsen - Sudbury Northern Life Staff

UPDATED — Aug. 4, 11:33 p.m.

One of the nine workers fired by Vale during the recent labour dispute with Steelworkers Local 6500 has been tapped as vice-president of the union.

Patrick Veinot already has a history of leadership with the union. He was the chief steward of maintenance and electrical from 2001-2006 and the vice-president of the union from 2006-2009.

He ran against John Fera for the president's position during union elections last year, and lost by a small margin.

When Fera's Aug. 1 retirement from both the union and Vale came into effect, Rick Bertrand, the vice-president of the union, automatically became the president.

The union's executive board voted to have Veinot fill the position of vice-president.

“I'm anxious to get back at what I do,” Veinot said. “This is what I do. This is my calling. I'm really excited about that. Of course, the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB)(decision) hangs over my head. It's one step at a time.”

He and seven of the other fired workers are currently waiting for a ruling from the OLRB. One of the fired workers was able to retire from Vale with a pension.

The union is asking that the labour relations board allow a provincial arbitrator to make the decision about whether or not the fired workers should be taken back by Vale.

Both parties presented their case at a July 13 hearing, but the labour board has not yet rendered a decision.

Veinot said he would not be able to continue in his role if the OLRB rules he is not entitled to arbitration, or an arbitrator rules against giving his job back.

In the meantime, he said he's able to function as vice-president of Local 6500 because he is a union member in good standing.

He said the fact that he's currently unable to go onto company property isn't a problem because “there's nothing in the (collective bargaining agreement) that requires the vice-president or the president (of the union) to be on the (company's) property.”

Bertrand was not available to comment on this story, as he is currently on holiday.

Veinot and two other fired workers are facing criminal charges related to an alleged incident involving an encounter with a person who they thought was a replacement worker. Veinot was charged with criminal harassment in the matter.

One of the other suspects in the case was also charged with criminal harassment, and a third suspect was charged with both assault and criminal harassment.

He said the case was originally supposed to be heard later this month, but the court date has been moved to December because they decided to switch lawyers.

Veinot said he's looking forward to helping his members deal with the “terrible” circumstances they are in as they return to work after the nearly year-long labour dispute.

“The mines are in poor shape and the equipment is in poor shape,” he said. “It's been a year that people haven't worked. There's a lot of different stresses. The company is still disciplining people for things they did on the picket line. The union has its hands full right now, dealing with Vale.”

Veinot said he, along with all members of Local 6500, learned a lot during the strike.

“We learned it the hard way, unfortunately,” he said. “We're dealing with a different animal. We're dealing with a large, global, multinational company that has a different ideology. They are aggressively trying to change Canadian work culture, if you will, for the worse.”

  • Vienot, your wrong. Their not trying to change the canadian work culture. Their trying to change the old Inco work culture. Why you say? In all my years, there has always been the culture of DFing and doing as little as possible. Please dont deny it as we all know its true. The union deserved a spanking for all the crap they did to the company during this strike and now its payback. If anyone doesnt like the work atmosphere then they can join you on the unemployment line bud.

  • sorry about that......I meant December

  • Keep watching Lloyd.
I'm sure there's more and worse to come between now & October.

  • Just when we thought the USWA couldn't possibly get any stupider, they go and do this! LOL

  • What a great example he has set as a Union rep. should be kicked out of the Union as well, what a tool!!!!

  • Hey kids...supper's ready

  • I suggest some check into Bertrands criminal record. Is it then no surprise he wants others of the same sort on the excutive? This would be hilarious if it wasnt true. Decertify this disgraceful union.

  • Criminals not wanted. Anyone with a pending or a criminal record should not be in a union executive position period in Ontario. Who cares if you beat up joggers, well we care and we dont want thugs representing us anymore. Petition Bartolucci and Ontario Liberals that we want crimal checks on all union executive members in this province before they have a right to take a position in any legal union in this province period.

  • This union is an idiot, Vale will lay him off even labor board acts in favour of him....
Why members paying dues for this low self esteem, useless goon ?

  • @ Resident
If I was the Masked Marvel Myles Sullivan I'd be looking for another job. when Veinot's officially terminated by Vale, Myle's job may be a nice place for Bertrand to slide his buddy into.

  • BS Top Gun. You were just curious about a guys heritage when it had NOTHING to do with the story? Why would you be curious about that? What would it have to do with anything?

It wouldn't - unless it helped you form opinions about people. And that is called being racist.

    Not cool.

  • Why should a private company be forcrd to take these goons back? "A union member in good standing" that is a contradction in terms! The guy is a bullying radical who will do nothing for the membership but bring them down! If there is a way to get rid of him then i would suggest they do it now1

  • I don't care if he is white, black, green, purple red, orange or blue. It was just a curious question.

  • Noofie, I believe he will be paid by the union, not Vale. And he states in the story above that this position is only until it is decided if he can return to Vale. If he isn't allowed to return to Vale then he will no longer be able to hold the VP position.

  • @joy_3==If this is the same guy that posts under that name in the SS blogs you should read his posts in articles about natives,, especially around the HST debate a month or so ago....A lot of racism about that....Some people are proud Canadians and some are not.......

  • I agree Top Gun has asked a very racist question. If this Vienot was black or chinese would he be asking this stupid question.Let us all have solidarity in getting rid of this criminal guy from the foreign lameduck union from Pittsburg. All it takes is to have the majority of membership sign a petition to the Ministry of Labour that this union has failed to represent its members and to find a Canadian union to represent the VALE workers. Let us make sure every member knows we lost 40,000 Dollars cause of his anitcs in keeping us out for 6 months.

  • Top Gun 8/5/2010 11:09:05 AM -
Is this Vienot guy first nation? Just curious.
====What difference does it make? He is still involved with a useless and doomed union after the way they took care of their membership the last 12 months...Should read,,the way they DIDN'T take care of their membership...This is one of the guys that kept out everybody an extra 6 months trying to protect themselves.........

  • Let us all have solidarity in getting rid of this foreign lameduck union from Pittsburg. All it takes is to have the majority of membership sign a petition to the Ministry of Labour that this union has failed to represent its members and to find a Canadian union to represent the VALE workers. Of course it will take a strong leader not a criminal like VP who likes to beat up joggers. This guy is one creep.

  • Is this Vienot guy first nation? Just curious.

  • There's plenty of guys like Vienut. Fortunately for us, most of them are locked up.

  • "He said the case was originally supposed to be heard later this month, but the court date has been moved to December because they decided to switch lawyers."

Well if that isn't one way to manipulate our so called legal system to "protect" the guilty, I don't know what is.

  • Unbelievable! Vale must be laughing at these idiots. What is 6500 trying to prove?? I hope Vale breaks this union apart. They have done enough damage to our city.

  • Let us all have solidarity in getting rid of this foreign lameduck union from Pittsburg. All it takes is to have the majority of membership sign a petition to the Ministry of Labour that this union has failed to represent its members and to find a Canadian union to represent the VALE workers. Of course it will take a strong leader to take us away from the foreign controlled union and the criminal element Patrick Venoit VP and the President on holidays. Don't forget they get whole salaries when they do union work.

  • Since PV is not a Vale employee, and Tito has said he never will return as an employee, its obvious that Vale will not pay his VP salary.
Will it come from the membership? Pittsburgh? or will Patrick make it a voluntary position?

    What a joke!

1200 votes for a decert vote? Are there that many of you with the cojones to do it? or will you just pull your cap down, pay your monthly union dues?

  • clockw3rx...where do I sign this petition?

  • john, sorry, this is a union. Will be no such thing as an impeachment clause. But there well may be a clause that if you object you are out.
Prior to this latest debacle both unions and companies all over were laughing at 6500 leaders. Now, they are laughing harder.

  • 3000 guys are paying their dues to this mockery of union leadership. When is someone going to stand up and say "ENOUGH!" to this BS? There must be impeachment procedures somewhere in that book of union rhetoric?

  • Well, well. thought I'd pop in and see if there was any sign of sanity on the part of radicals/activists here.
I see by CCNR there is not. Surprise, not.
No need to sign any petition to get rid of 6500. The new pres, on holidays, just signed the kids death warrant. may as well write the obit and order the headstone now. perhaps something small, made of sandstone up by the big nickel will be just right. They may as well put their flag at half mast at the hall.

  • This comedy of errors from Local 6500 has just turned from silly to a complete farce with the appointment of this accused felon. Maybe he will appoint a bunch of Hells Angels to escort him onto Vale's property as this would be about his speed and intellect. The only worse choice than Veinot for the VP job would have been the fired CEO of British Petroleum.
    =
    =
This union is ready to receive last rites and with moves like this they are proving they are on a Kamikaze mission with Vale.
    =
    =
BTW CCNR (PW?) your loyalty during the early part of the strike was admirable but your blind loyalty towards Pat Veinot is absurd. No wonder Vale is looking to make life tough for some of the bad apples and you can bet they know exactly who the PV supporters are.

  • What'a the problem with the steelworks Union?..Do they have no one else they can tap?..Why? 6500 finaly has a chance to clean it's hand's and start over!......Clean hand's or a thug?.......LOL this group is hilarious!.....LOL...Kepp up the Greta work morons!

  • Northern Guy, thanks for correcting me. PV is alleged to be involved in criminal harassment but not assault. I retract my earlier statement and apologize for the mistake.

PV is probably a nice guy but if what they allege is true, I think he made a mistake in being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • purplerain.... if I'm not mistaken, only Mike French was charged with assault for the jogger incident. Vienot and Patterson are charged with criminal harassment, and even though the harassment/assault took place off company property, I don't think it will be too difficult to prove that it was work related. I'm sure Vale has evidence of the threats made by these fools on their Strikefarce as well as on the 'official' union websites. These fools have about as much chance of winning this case as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest.

  • Who is going to pay Patrick Veinot's salary? I don't think it is going to be Vale. The Union will have to take Vale to court to get Vale to pay his salary. It may have be the union members paying for his salary out of their union dues. That should make PV very popular with the rank and file.

I am sure there were a lot of people the Union could have appointed that are still employed with Vale. This decision was made as a slap in the face to Vale, basically saying Vale can't tell us what we can do. It looks like the war is going to continue between the Union and the Company for quite some time.

Back in June, the Union was implying that it was illegal for Vale not to agree to have an arbritrator decide the fate of the 9 fired workers. If what Vale did was so illegal, why has it taken so long for the OLRB to make a decision? This decision should have been a slam dunk if what the Union alleges was true.

This decision makes it sound like the Union doesn't expect to hear a decision from the OLRB for a long time.

The Union is still waiting to hear from the OLRB if the Company can direct Local 2020 workers to do Local 6500 work during a work stoppage. This case was from last February, more than 6 months ago.

The question is should Patrick Veinot be fired over an alleged assault off Company property, even if he didn't throw any punches. The jury is still out on this one.

I don't think the OLRB will be very happy to see the Union trying to put pressure on them to make a ruling in the Union's favour by appointing Patrick Veinot as Union VP.

  • ya this is very very ridiculous .....

bad choice in many opinions .... maybe the union should just get out of out city all together .. they have caused our city so much crap

i'd sign a petition to get rid of them

  • How's that saying go? The inmates have taken over the asylum, or something like that?

  • He looks different without the belaclava.

  • GREAT NEWS!!!
Fantastic hearing Pat is returning to his old roost. :-)
Pat, you have been an inspiration through out this total injustice. I look forward to your leadership and guidance..
Once these fictitious charges have been "deleted" you can get on doing what you do best..
It will be a pleasure seeing you in that office once again..

  • I used to feel sorry for the innocent ones, but that view has changed. The members allow these semi-literate goons to run the union, so they get what they deserve. It would only take 40% of the members to indicate that they no longer want this crooked Yankee union representing them for the ministry to hold a decertification vote... but it seems like the average members are scared of these radicals. Try growing a pair boyz.

  • 6500 is nothing but a goon squad.

I feel sorry for the innocent ones.

  • Unreal....given this kind of "management" the union doesn't have to worry about Vale breaking it...the members just might do so on their own.

  • i cannot beleive what i am reading.

Talk about not learning form your mistakes. This guy is responsible for 3000 men and women being without work for 3 months longer than they should have been and now they want to make him VP?!

The good members are gonna start a riot.

  • Unbelievable.... facing criminal charges and they make hime vice president! Not a very good move from 6500. You would think they would try and get some support for the union which took a kicking recently. Great PR guys...!!

  • Protecting one of their own............good luck to the rest of 6500 you're in trouble!

  • Vale has made it abundantly clear that Pat Vienut will never work for them again, so how does his being selected as a union executive in the best interest of the membership?
I predict that Vale is not done teaching local 6500 some lessons... unfortunately, some people are incapable of learning.

  • How can he be union VP if he was fired by the company?
He was fired for a reason, this just proves the union are law breakers.
