Mediation between OPSEU, NOSM to resume Sept. 14

By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff

UPDATED - Sept. 14 at 2:23 p.m.

Members of the United Steelworkers union will visit striking OPSEU Local 677 members on their picket line at the entrance to Laurentian University Sept. 14, starting at 7 a.m.

The Steelworkers will cook a breakfast for the strikers, and then walk the picket lines with them.

Local 677 represents clerical, administrative and technical workers at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). They have been on strike since Aug. 16.

The parties have agreed to return to the table Sept. 14-17 in Thunder Bay with the assistance of a Ministry of Labour mediator. Mediated talks earlier this month ended without an agreement.

Steelworkers Local 6500 members settled a strike against Vale earlier this summer, after being on strike for nearly a year.

Local 677 is also planning a rally and march in downtown Sudbury between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sept. 15.

They will march through the downtown core, making stops at Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci's office, Tom Davies Square and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term care office.

  • OMG you're kidding? A labour strike in Sudbury, where the union goes around begging for public support - who knew eh? LOL "Welcome to Sudbury - Labour Strike Capital of North America". Come bring your business or your public service here - we'll make sure a strike shuts you down every few years!

  • Will that be the first job you ever qualified for?

  • I'm thinking of getting a paper route D' Lawhaaaa

With your 4 routes, how many hours of work does that qualify on EI?

  • Carefull what you say,Noofus.Maybe some day,YOU will get a job and have to make breakfast in the morning.

    P.S. And,NO,being a 'professional anti-union blogger',does NOT constitute having a job

  • @ yomomma
this kinda says it all about the USW commitment to labour solidarity doesn't it? We're gonna cook you breakfast!.......well, that seems like a lot of work and would require early rising and a degree of effort. Instead, we'll send you some coffee and donuts.

  • They never cooked the breakfast...they sent coffee and donuts...

  • There is a good chance that the talks will succeed on the fourteenth,as long as the steelworkers don't get involved.

  • I thought it was only USW 6500 that was strike happy, now it seems that this attitude is rubbing off on others also..Poor Sudbury..Well if they stay on strike for another 11 months they will tie 6500 for the longest strike in Sudbury..Now that is something to be proud of!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So the YouSW will cook breakfast? Hope these folk like weenies to start the day. Gives the kids a use for them memorial burning barrels as well.
    Who will supply the wood?
And there are 8/9 sorta members available to cook the breakfast.
hey, will leo show up with reaper and birdy to lend support?

  • Somebody help me here please.

I thought these positions were not unionized - that is, there is no contract in place. so these people blocking traffic on Ramsey Lake Road are union members who happen to work at the NOSM.

Hire replacements. Get the road open.
Sudbury doesn't need any more of this unionism crap to further discourage industry from moving in.....I mean if these fools would try to shut down a new school for Doctors, what would they do to an ordinary light manufacturing company?

Time for the city to look at the image and effect these union professionals are building for Sudbury

  • Are you kidding me? There aren't going to be any steel workers there..maybe a few union reps and some retirees if you're lucky. The 6500 is back to work and don't give a rats @ss about anybody else.

  • What? So now the good ole boyz are gonna show these strikers how it's done USW style. Careful, they'll make you stay out for a year and go back for something you could have got if you weren't so uppity since the beginning. Oh, let's not forget how they've mastered how to cook a wienie. Whatever happens, remember one thing. DONT DRINK THE KOOL AID!!!!!!!!

  • you just knew that they would get some more use out of the grim reeper and big bird costumes. ....lol
