Laurentian offers shuttles for bus-riding students

By: Heidi Ulrichsen - Sudbury Northern Life Staff

UPDATED Sept. 8 at 2:46 p.m.

The union representing striking Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) workers said it will do its best to keep traffic flowing through its picket lines at the entrance to Laurentian University as students return to class this week.

Tyler England, chair of OPSEU Local 677's bargaining team, said he has met with representatives of Laurentian and Greater Sudbury Police about the traffic issue on several occasions.

“We realize that this time of year is always busier on campus, and there's always heavier traffic flow than there would be in the summer period,” he said.

“We're going to do our best to manage that traffic and keep it flowing as best as possible, while still exercising our right to inform the public of our struggle.

“We're looking at different creative ways to manage that, such as leafleting more than talking to the people in vehicles, maybe letting more vehicles flow through and maybe not stopping each individual vehicle.”

Despite England's statements, Northern Life has received several reports of traffic tie-ups by those attempting to enter or exit the university Sept. 8.

England said his members — clerical, administrative and technical workers who have been on strike against NOSM since Aug. 16 — are being supported by other union members at the university, as well as the student associations.

He said students, along with union members representing faculty and staff at the university, will visit Local 677's picket lines Sept. 9 as part of a “solidarity day.”

Chris Mercer, chief of staff at Laurentian University, said because Greater Sudbury Transit has been dropping students off at the entrance to the university instead of within the campus during the strike, Laurentian has set up a shuttle system to bring students who take the bus  to their classroom buildings.

“We have a shuttle cycling all through campus every 10 minutes,” Mercer said.

Greater Sudbury Police are warning motorists of delays on Ramsey Lake Road, and are asking motorists who can avoid the area do so. Those who cannot are asked to be patient, and factor in time for potential delays.

Two days of mediated talks between NOSM and Local 677 Sept. 1-2 failed to reach an agreement between the two parties.

They have agreed to return to the table Sept. 14 -17, in Thunder Bay, with the assistance of a Ministry of Labour mediator. The parties have agreed to the mediator’s recommendation to maintain a media blackout until and during these new dates.

some of these people make 22 an hour i hear is this true?"

well duh! yea. some of these people are technical staff. after paying thousands of dollars for an education and the many years experience it takes to get qualified, you think they should make the same wage you make flipping burgers?
how about complaining about the people making the sunshine list? how about complaining about the Dominator and his "just under" 400k salary complete with free house and free car. its senior management that’s sucking all the cash out of the system not the poor guys providing the essential services

  • Typical union bull..Disrupt the public and then turn the public against you = less support..You union tools can't figure that out? Where have you been for the last year when USW was on strike????

  • One of my favourite moments of the day was when I was going home with my three children under three and they were all screaming as I waited to get past the line- Then as I approached the entrance and voice my opinion I get this, "Please we aren't trying to hurt anyone- just have a voice"...give me a break.

  • "“We're going to do our best to manage that traffic and keep it flowing as best as possible, while still exercising our right to inform the public of our struggle."
Nobody gives a $hit about your struggle so let me get HOME to let my dogs out....Jacka$$.

  • I think the strategy of picketing the Laurentian University entrance on Ramsey Lake Road is going to back fire on the union.

If the union is trying to be as big a nuisance as possible, that strategy is probably working.

People that are trying to get through the picket line in order to go home or get to work and who have nothing to do with NOSM or Laurentian University are very angry. A reasonable delay is one thing, waiting more than an hour to get through a picket line is not acceptable.

The union claims they are exercising their rights to inform the public of their "struggle".

Where does the public go to complain about their "struggle"
to get through the picket line in a reasonable amount of time?

There must be an incredible amount of frustration and aggravation on the part of the public trying to get through the picket line in order to get to work or go home.

  • NOSM should only be permitted to picket in front of THEIR building and THEIR entrance to THEIR property. The entrance to LU does not belong to them and they are not even part of Laurentian University. I'm tired of waiting in line for 2 hours to get out of there.

  • 1. Northern School of Medicine is NOT even part of Laurentian University so why should LAURENTIAN students and staff be suffering for them?
    2. They are indeed stopping people from leaving the campus. I was there today and they were only letting one car through every 5 minutes. The line up of cars (including the useless shuttle service) was backed up a couple of kilometres by 11:40am. This is crap. I do not pay to go to a school that allows a union that is not even part of that school to hold me hostage. I PAY GOOD MONEY TO GO THERE and I should be able to come and go as I please. I have had enough.
I think everyone should contact Laurentian University and ask them why a school that is does not belong to them is permitted to hold their students and staff hostage and demand that it be stopped.

  • Don't call 911, the police don't want to enforce the law when it comes to strikes as witnessed by the Vale strike. They had plenty of chances to arrest a few of them goons and did nothing; example, blockades at clarabelle and Levack entrance, plenty of police and paddy wagon but left empty handed, blockade stayed..So picket lines at university mean nothing. With an NDP mayor strikes are the way to go in Sudbury, too bad but we are known as a strike happy city....

  • It is a lot quicker leaving the university through the picketers than driving down Regent St. or Paris St. in the Southend. If those construction crews dont let you through, call 911.

  • "My daughter just got home from the university today. The picketers were allowing only one car through each cycle of the lights and spoke to the occupants of each car and well as giving a flyer. So much for the union's claim to "keep traffic flowing as best as possible"."

I sure hope this is on the way into the property. If it's on the way out and they are stopping you dial 911. That would be forcible confinement...go directly to jail do not pass go.

  • some of these people make 22 an hour i hear is this true?

  • No striker has the right to impede traffic on a public roadway. If our mayor had any guts at all, he would instruct the police to simply arrest these thugs.

This city is pathetic. Strike capital of the world.

  • My daughter just got home from the university today. The picketers were allowing only one car through each cycle of the lights and spoke to the occupants of each car and well as giving a flyer. So much for the union's claim to "keep traffic flowing as best as possible".
While they may have a "right to inform the public of their struggle", how often do you need to inform the same people (the students) over and over again. That argument makes no sense after the first couple of days.

  • Why isn't the bus going through teh picket line??!

Nice to know the city supports 200 idiots and not thousands of students... a large majority guests in our fine city.

"“We're going to do our best to manage that traffic and keep it flowing as best as possible, while still exercising our right to inform the public of our struggle."

And i'm gonna do my best not to get out of my car and let you know how i feel for holding me up if or when ever i head in that direction.
