The Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Area Association (BIA) is calling for nominations as it prepares to elect nine directors to the board of directors.

Nomination forms must be submitted to the city clerk by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 30, with voting on Feb. 3 and Feb. 8 at the downtown BIA office, located at 7 Cedar St., unit 102.

In order to be eligible for nominations, a person must not be a city councillor, and must be the owner, operator, partner, office, director or employee of a business in the downtown BIA's area.

The downtown BIA was established in 1977, and focused early on in the beautification and marketing of the area, a press release from the BIA stated.

The group works to develop policy, marketing, promotions, special events, street beautification, safety and security, economic development and communication with downtown businesses and city council.

A not-for-profit organization, the BIA is funded entirely by downtown commercial property owners and businesses through property taxes.
