A trust account has been set up for the three children of the late Tinde “Tina” Nemet, a former Greater Sudbury resident who was stabbed to death in her Ottawa home on March 11.
Tina's husband Mihalj “Mike” Nemet has been arrested and charged in her murder.
Sue Melville was Tina's neighbour when the Nemet's lived in Greater Sudbury and said her daughters were friends with the two Nemet daughters.
“Tina's kids also attended the same school that my daughter did,” Melville said. “I knew through the different school events that she was very committed to her kids, absolutely devoted to them (and) wanted the best for them.”
Two of the Nemet children — 18-year-old Teodora and 15 year-old-Thomas — still live in Ottawa. The oldest Nemet child, 19-year-old Leonora is a first-year nursing student at Laurentian University.
Melville said she and Sharon Flinn set up the trust account at the TD Canada Trust in the South End. She said they're hoping to collect $100,000 for the Nemet children.
“We want to set them up on their feet, the oldest one is in first year university (and) the other two aren't even in post-secondary yet,” she said. “We want to be able to guarantee them a good start over the next few years. This is not a temporary situation — this isn't going to go away.”
She said every bit helps.
“We don't expect huge donations, we would just like lots of people to make donations — open their piggy-banks, give up coffee for a week, maybe forgo one pack of cigarettes and take that money and make sure it gets to these kids because whatever people can donate will help out this family,” she said.
