Sudbury MP Glenn Thibeault was named the critic for consumer protection as federal NDP leader Jack Layton announced his shadow cabinet May 26.

Thibeault had served the role during the previous session of Parliament. His work on “credit card interest rates, ATM fees and gas prices” ensured “that the issues affecting the pocketbooks of Canadian families remained a central issue in Ottawa” according to a press release from the politician.

“It is a great privilege to be asked to continue in this role; however I know we have a lot of work ahead of us,” Thibeault stated. “The issues of affordability and credit card rates need to be addressed by the government. So too does the continual price gouging of Canadians at the gas pumps.”

The NDP is now the country's official opposition, winning 103 seats in Parliament.

Both Thibeault and fellow NDP caucus member Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle were recently sworn in for the 41st session of Parliament for their second terms.

“I am honoured to represent the constituents of Nickel Belt in this Parliament,” Gravelle stated in a press release.

“I am grateful for their support and trust, and will work as hard as I can to bring their concerns forward, both in Parliament and within our caucus.”
