The Greater Sudbury Fire Service is reminding citizens that there are rules to follow when using fireworks.

“The fire service does not recommend the casual use of fireworks,” fire chief Marc Leduc stated in a press release.

“Fireworks can be dangerous and are best left with those who have received safety training.”

Citizens who choose to have a family or neighbourhood fireworks display are advised that “under (the) municipal bylaw, they must own the land on which the fireworks are being discharged.”

Also, the person discharging the fireworks “must be at least 18 years old or under the direct and constant supervision of someone who is at least 18 years old.”

Fireworks can only be discharged between dusk and 11 p.m.

A municipal bylaw states the time of year in which a fireworks display can be discharged are Victoria Day, Canada Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. If citizens use fireworks outside these dates they “could be subject to fines.”

The Greater Sudbury Fire Services recommends the following tips:

-Purchase fireworks from a reliable source.
-Carefully read and follow the instructions on fireworks packaging.
-Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by.
-Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass.
-Always keep everyone at a safe distance.
-Light only one at a time and never try to light fireworks or hold lit fireworks in your hand.
-Never relight “dud” fireworks. It is best to wait 30 minutes and then soak them in a bucket of water prior to disposal in a metal garbage can.
