Single-detached home starts were down 16 per cent in July in Greater Sudbury compared to the same month in 2010, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

According to a press release from the CMHC, Greater Sudbury had 31 new single-family home starts in July 2011 — a 16.2 per cent reduction compared to the 37 new starts in July 2010.

“The 31 single-detached home starts in July brought the single-detached year-to-date total to 166 units, off 5.7 per cent from last year's first seven months,” Warren Philp, CMHC's northern Ontario market analyst said in the release.

“Not only were July starts down from last year, but they were also behind the 10-year average for July.”

The release also stated that a “significant softening trend on the Sudbury new home construction market is not expected” as the July “year over year housing starts' decline came after a strong month.”
