The province has contributed $1 million towards the construction of a new, 16,000 square foot Northern Water Sports Centre on Ramsey Lake.

The Northern Water Sports Centre is a non-profit organization established by its four founding partners: Sudbury Canoe Club, Sudbury Rowing Club, Sudbury Dragon Boat Festival and the City of Greater Sudbury.

The organization aims to become a Ontario regional centre of excellence for recreational and competitive water sports programming and for local, regional and international events.

The new facility, estimated to cost $7 million, will be located on municipal property neighboring Science North and the Sudbury Yacht Club, off of Ramsey Lake Road.

It will address shortcomings in storage and space at the current Sudbury Canoe Club building, and enhance meeting and training rooms available for public use.

The expansion will allow for the development of new community programs and for the purchase of new equipment.

Construction will begin in October 2011 and be completed in September 2012.

“Our government is helping community organizations enhance local tourism,” Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci said, in a press release.

“The creation of this facility will help Sudbury to increase its ability to host paddle sport races on Ramsey Lake.”

The funding was provided through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation’s (NOHFC) Infrastructure and Community Development Program.
