The Technical Standards and Safety Authority has launched an investigation after an accident Aug. 27 at the midway set up in a parking lot across from Bell Park as part of SummerFest.

Bernadette Celis, a spokesperson for the organization, said it would be inappropriate for the Technical Standards and Safety Authority to comment on the incident, because the investigation is ongoing.

However, local media reports indicate a 14-year-old girl suffered a broken elbow after she was thrown from the swing ride at the midway and slammed into the fence surrounding the ride.

The swing ride was still shut down as of the afternoon of Aug. 28, although the other rides at the midway were operating.

Calls to SummerFest organizers have not yet been returned.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing public safety. Operating throughout Ontario, the organization regulates the safety of amusement devices, boilers and pressure vessels, elevating devices, fuels, operating engineers, ski lifts, and upholstered and stuffed articles.

  • My 2 grand kids 8 and 4 went on this very same ride twice, they loved this one. What I observed there saturday was astonishing, the operators of the rides although looking very tired checked the hardware and did a circle check of all the riders in their seats prior to starting the ride every time and adjusted those that needed to be adjusted. What was amazing was the kids that got scared on a ride would actually try and free themselves in mid ride, witnessed this 3 times that day, once on the swings and twice on the srambler where scared kids usually older around 14 would pull the pin on the door and try to open the door mid ride.

  • In reality anytime you go on one of these rides you are taking your life into your hands. Look at the operators and they are the people setting these things up!
