NDP edging out Liberals in Sudbury: labour group

The Ontario Federation of Labour said a poll commissioned by their organization shows the NDP is poised to take the Sudbury riding, among other ridings in the province currently held by Liberals.

The Ontario Federation of Labour said a poll commissioned by their organization shows the NDP is poised to take the Sudbury riding, among other ridings in the province currently held by Liberals.

Incumbent Liberal candidate Rick Bartolucci has represented the Sudbury riding since 1995. He is running against NDP candidate Paul Lowenberg, Progressive Conservative candidate Gerry Labelle, Green Party candidate Pat Rogerson, Family Coalition Party Carita Murphy Marketos and independent candidate David Popescu.

The Ontario Federation of Labour poll shows the NDP have 38 per cent of the support in the Sudbury riding, with the Liberals close behind at 37 per cent, with the Conservatives garnering 19 per cent of the vote and the Greens four per cent.

The poll was conducted by Forum Research Inc., and involved interviews with 6,000 respondents in nine ridings on Sept. 26 and 27.

“We poll a large number of people in several ridings about support for local candidates, and discovered an incredible momentum behind (provincial NDP leader) Andrea Horwath and the NDP,” Ontario Federation of Labour president Sid Ryan said, in a press release.

“We zeroed in on the tight races and found that the NDP candidate is the front-runner in eight out of the nine ridings surveyed, often with considerable margins.”
