They've been practising since September — the waltz, cha-cha and tango are becoming familiar steps for a group of local celebrities.

On Feb. 24, they'll be showing off what they've learned, while vying for the coveted crown in the Dancing With the Stars for Easter Seals Kids contest.

Familiar faces like Stephanie Piche from Legacy Events and Catering, Sharon Baiden from Greater Sudbury Police Services, Jamie Panas from Rewind 103.9, Norm Piche from Investors Group, Shawn Poland from Cambrian College and Glenn Thibeault, Sudbury's NDP MP will be strutting their stuff at the Caruso Club in support of local kids with disabilities.

Celebrity judges, including Mayor Marianne Matichuk, will be on hand to pick the winners — however, the audience is encouraged to have their say, too, by purchasing “voting cards.”

While the winner does walk away with bragging rights, all the dancers know they are supporting a good cause.

“This is such a unique way to help out local kids with physical disabilities,” Baiden, who has put in many hours with her professional dance partner Dennis Harasymchuk from Dennis Harasymchuk Ballroom Dancing, stated.

Nicole Blais, development manager with Easter Seals Kids, said she has always been a fan of the popular TV show Dancing With The Stars. For the last two years, she's given it a local twist by running the Easter Seals fundraiser.

In 2011, the event brought in about $44,000. This year, she said she would like to reach the $50,000 mark.

So far, tickets to the event are about half-sold. The evening also includes hors d'oeuvres, dinner and musical entertainment. Events begin at 5:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in attending the event can purchase an $80 ticket or table of eight for $640 by contacting the Easter Seals office at 705-566-8858.
