'It's humbling'

By: Heidi Ulrichsen - Sudbury Northern Life Staff

Leo Gerard said it's “almost a first,” but he was nearly speechless after Steelworkers Local 6500 officials revealed they'd named the large banquet hall in the new Steelworkers Hall after him.

A crush of hundreds of people looked on in the entranceway to the Brady Street building Jan. 26 as Local 6500 president Rick Bertrand and other union officials unveiled a sign which reads “Leo W. Gerard Hall,” beneath which hangs a picture of Gerard.

“I gotta make sure none of the tears show up in the paper,” Gerard, who is a native of Sudbury, joked while speaking to the crowd. “It would ruin my reputation. It's humbling. There's a part of me that's extremely proud, and a part that says I don't deserve this.”

Gerard said he accepted the honour “on behalf of the tens of thousands of people that have been members of Local 6500 who have worked and sacrificed, and some who have even paid with their lives.”

Union members, politicians, community leaders and citizens showed up in droves for the grand opening of the Steelworkers Hall, which replaces the facility on Frood Road which burned down in 2008.

“When you go inside, you'll find it simply breathtaking,” Gerard said, before helping to cut the ribbon on the facility. “It's a gift, in many ways, from Local 6500 to the community. This hall is not seen as just our home. We want this hall to be seen as the community's home that they can come and use.”

Bertrand said it was “altogether too fitting” for Local 6500 to name the new banquet hall after Gerard because of what he's done “not only for the working people in Canada, but the working people around the globe.”

In exchange, Gerard, along with United Steelworkers District 6 director Wayne Fraser and Ken Neumann, United Steelworkers national director for Canada, presented Local 6500 with a dedication plaque for the new hall.

Although losing the old hall was “painful,” and union members will “never forget the memories,” the official opening of the new hall is a new chapter for the union, Bertrand said.

He said he was pleased with the large turnout for the union hall's official opening.

“It just shows that people in the community know the Steelworkers, and we've been a community friend for a long time,” Bertrand said.

The hall was built in an old grocery store building, and features a 500-seat banquet hall, a 150-seat banquet hall, several classrooms and boardrooms, an outside deck, and office space for local Steelworkers employees.

Julien Dionne, the past president of the Steelworkers Order of Active Retirees (SOAR), said he thinks the new hall is “great.”

“I never thought they could rebuild and capture the grandeur of the old hall,” he said. “The way this place is set up, with all of the offices on one side and halls on the other side, it would be great for conferences and conventions. I'm sure the Steelworkers will take advantage of that.”

Lorna Maclean, whose husband is a Local 6500 member, told Northern Life during a tour of the hall's new kitchen she thinks the facility is “beautiful.”

“It's very functional,” she said. “There's lots of different events that could be held here.”

  • There is no point trying to argue with someone who only spews hatred and insults. All they want is attention and unfortunately, the only way for them to get attention is to provoke rather than to intelligently argue their point. And as any intelligent person knows, best to leave the dogs to fight amongst themselves.

  • It was great to be at our Ribbon cutting and have the Hall Named after Leo. There is no one more deserving for the Honour.

It feels good that now we can go forward as a membership with a Home to call our own and begin building new memories not only for the members but many in the community.

We can now settle in and continue our work in worker rights and safety and health. With the stresses of a temporary home and the headaches of construction gone our strong and dedicated Local will continue to defend the middle class life style and the working person.

One day the new Hall will equal the Frood Road Hall in becoming a community symbol of solidarity, generosity and integrity.

  • Yup... You poor Antis'...
I almost feel sorry for you all...
    .
But then again, I sure get a good laugh from reading your comments...

  • @overpaidunderworked
Present company excepted, there have been few if any insults directed at the rank and file union members except to refer to them as "sheeple".
The union execs from Leo the Loser down to the militant USWofA Shop Stewards HAVE been attacked, insulted and ridiculed though.
If you are in this group, suck it up buttercup.

  • Poor union sheep are just like their leader... all crying like little girls. lol
Hey, I want to know, was Big Bird at the grand opening? hahahahahaha, you losers crack me up.

  • Ahhhhh… The green eyed monster…
    .
You antis’ shouldn’t waste so much time on such blatant jealousy…
    Sometimes you're ahead, and sometimes you're behind…

  • I know what you mean, cynnical.Being a long time Steelworker,i should be upset at the insults. But,then,i look where they come from.

No matter how long im off this site,a week,a month,2 months, when i come back, its the SAME bunch of whiners, over, and over and over......They must be on 7 days week.

Obviously, they have no wives,no families,no friends,no jobs,no hobbies,nothing........just a bunch of losers.By their own admission, one of them admitted last year they spent their time at the bar, watch 'wrestling'.Need i say more?

Oh,well, its almost the end of the month........their welfare cheque should be in.Guess we will get a break for a few days.

P.S.Did you notice how they conveniently forgot to mention the FORTUNE the union and workers have given to countless organizations over the years? or the tremendous gains they have made for workers?????

  • You bad bloggers are upsetting cynnical1 again.... hahahaha!
A comment from the "other" local paper says it best...
    RECAP:
Gerard is the leader of a foreign (American) based union.
Leo mislead his members into a year long, lost strike.
His megalomania was the centre of a failed Global Steelworker Union with him as the king.
His ideals cost 9 men their jobs. Forever ruined the finances of families.
A city lost respect for a once proud union because of HIS strike.
Gerard was a total embarassment when he put on sweat pants, an old USWofA sweater, pop bottle glasses and a Foster Brooks beard. Swore at that rally and promised to "Shut the god**mned Province Down."
The same Gerard proclaimed "Solidarity Forever!" Then attacked 2020 for taking a Fair Deal. Slithered off in the middle of the night when 6500 took a worse deal. Never once facing the rank-and-file over his propaganda and 1/2 truths. Then he TURNED HIS BACK on Voisey's Bay when they were the last union striking.
Ah, Leo. The proud Canadian that endorses "By American" when the USA media asks about their economy.
Gerard. The man who can change appearances depending on the media moment. Sweatsuit, to corporate business suit. Ironic he is a paid, full time executive CEO, not missing a single steak+lobster dinner while the brudders roasted expired wieners over picket barrels! The same CEO type he proclaims to hate IS the person he has become.
Sudbury has forever been damaged from LEO's forced strike. A union nearly bankrupted. Members near mutiny. And to top it off, he parachuted in a yes-man as VP.
Congrats indeed Leo. You deserved this...............

  • It's nice to see the sad pathetic little union bashers are filling their days with such meaningful projects like spewing their tired drivel in the papers.Carry on with your sad little lives haters!!!

  • "“It just shows that people in the community know the Steelworkers, and we've been a community friend for a long time,” Bertrand said."

Yes, we all know the steelworkers and what they are capable of.

  • What next? Oh, they'll probably change Sudbury to "Gerardbury".

  • Grrr! What next?

  • very nice building, I am actually kind of glad the old hall burned down
