Job-seeking students invited to Cambrian career fair

Cambrian College is holding a career and job fair in its gymnasium Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year, employer demand for qualified applicants is so high that the event sold out early, and recruiters are now on a waiting list, according to a press release.

Some employers send recruiters from across Canada to meet with Cambrian students.

While the fair helps employers fill vacancies, it also provides job seekers with information about diverse job opportunities, the press release said.

“It’s good to explore which positions are available, since you never know where you might find a great job,” Roni Sue Brown, employment and career adviser at Cambrian, said in the press release.

“For example, a hospital may have a booth at the fair, but that doesn’t mean the jobs are all in health care. A hospital could be looking for accountants, security personnel, or human resource staff in addition to nurses and lab technicians.

“Or, you might find a business known for its mining supply expertise looking for a graphic designer.”

Brown also said that learning about networking and job searching early helps people throughout their careers.

Local businesses and organizations also benefit from the fair, the press release said.

Cathy Volpini, human resources co-ordinator for the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) has not missed it once in the past 10 years.

“It is effective,” she said. “We (the GSPS) do have a very high number of applicants, and we have hired a good number of students.”

In addition to learning about different careers, meeting employers, and potentially landing a job, students who attend can also enter to win a Blackberry Playbook.
