More Than Just Desserts cooks up winning recipe

Sudburians came together for a night of dessert sampling and raised in excess of $33,000 for The Arthritis Society - money that will be used to fund arthritis education, support and programs in Sudbury.

The new Steelworkers Hall on Brady Street proved the perfect venue for the much-anticipated often sold-out annual fundraiser.

Arthritis is a disorder that involves inflammation of the joints, which can be debilitating for its sufferers. There are 4.5 million Canadians living with arthritis today, including infants. The Arthritis Society improves the lives of sufferers with their ongoing research and invaluable programs, aimed at empowering people to gain knowledge and control of their disease.

The More Than Just Desserts Gala is an event where attendees dress to impress and sample decadent desserts, hors d'oeuvres, and beverages, showcased by local restaurants, retailers and beverage companies. This year, guests enjoyed the culinary talents of 14 food presenters, as well as eight wine and beer presenters.

Local radio personality, Rich Griffin, and organizing committee member, Dave Battaino, emceed the evening.

Griffin and Battaino added fun and laughs as the live and silent auctions took place. There were many great items and experiences up for grabs, such as a ride-along with the Greater Sudbury Police Service and a barbecue with Sudbury firefighters in your backyard (which fetched $600).

Sarah Matt, local jazz singer, set the mood while performing throughout the evening.

Six decadent desserts were given to guests to judge, with Legacy Events and Catering taking top spot for Most Outstanding Dessert for their German Chocolate Bon Bon. Smith's Market was awarded Outstanding Presentation for Best Display.

Jessica Penteris gave an inspiring talk about the half marathon she participated in on the Great Wall of China and raised $9,000 to help those living with arthritis.
