The seventh Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Toll for Special Olympics, which was held in Sudbury on April 7, brought in more than $23,400.

That pushed the Toll's seven-year total to more than $138,000, all of which is donated to the Special Olympics.

“The citizens of the City of Greater Sudbury came through proving once again that, when asked to support a great cause, they are extremely generous,” Sgt. Joanne Pendrak and Sgt. Marj Jeffery,
Law Enforcement Torch Run co-ordinators, wrote in a press release.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service would like to give special thanks to all the volunteers who came out, offering up their time for such a worthwhile cause, the release continued. The volunteers included uniform officers, civilian employees and auxiliary officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service, members of the Ontario Provincial Police, representatives from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, members of the Military Police, Cambrian College students and Special Olympians.

“We also recognize the volunteers’ many friends and family members who spent many combined hours collecting at the toll booths.”

The voluntary tolls were conducted at the following locations: Costco, Starbucks, Chapters, Home Sense, Pet Smart, The Gap, Golf Town, Boston Pizza, Lowe's, Toys R Us and Best Buy.

“On behalf of all the Special Olympians, a heartfelt thank you goes out to all the individuals who not only made donations, but offered positive encouragement during the day to keep everyone smiling,” Pendrak and Jeffery wrote.
