On May 17, the food bank announced that in the last six months, $255,584.79 has been collected. Those funds were handed out through the bi-annual Spring Give to such agencies as the Salvation Army, Inner City Home, Maison Vale Hospice, Jeunes de la Rue and Blue Door Soup Kitchen. The food bank also distributed more than 461 tons of perishable and non-perishable food items in the last year, which equals about $2,305,000 worth of food.
“Thanks to the incredible support of the people, partners, businesses in our communities and the hundreds of volunteers that give their time to make the programs a success ... we have actually distributed 1,740 tons of food (since inception) to our region's hungry through the agencies,” a media release from the food bank stated.
In collecting so much, the food bank has been better able to fulfil its mandate of ensuring every person in the city has enough to eat.
Meanwhile, the food bank also annouced that While the number of people using the Sudbury Food Bank every month is down by about 1,000, the fact remains there are still more than 13,400 clients who need help filling their cupboards.
It's a good news/bad news type of situation, according to food bank. Unfortunately, the demand is still high.
