The director of Laurentian University's School of Commerce and Administration has been named the recipient of the university’s 2011-2012 Teaching Excellence Award.

Belaid Aouni currently teaches courses in Information Systems, Introduction to Management Science, Business Statistics and Production and Operations Management. At the PhD level, he teaches Theories in Interdisciplinary Studies.

He has supervised or co-supervised more than 20 graduate students in Master’s and PhD programs over the course of his career, and in 2011 served as acting director of the School of Graduate Studies.

In 2009, Aouni was named recipient of Laurentian’s annual Research Excellence Award, which recognizes faculty whose research activities contribute to the reputation and prestige of the university.

“Dr. Aouni’s teaching has been simply outstanding,” Peter Luk, dean, Faculty of Management, said in his nominating letter.

“He has been able to consistently encourage student participation and create a positive learning environment, while developing innovative teaching strategies.”

“I am honoured to be recognized with the Teaching Excellence Award,” Aouni said. “I believe the teaching profession influences the lives of the learners, and involves a responsibility in shaping their future. I feel privileged to have that responsibility.”

“The Laurentian community is enriched by the work and the dedication of faculty like Belaid,” vice-president academic and provost Robert Kerr said.

“We congratulate him on this award, and we commend his efforts to enhance education in his field.”
