“Artists, writers, performers and creative and cultural organizations are fundamental to the strength of our community,” Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci said in a press release. “Over the years, our government has fostered stability and growth in our local arts community through the OAC which has enhanced the quality of life for Sudburians.”
Benefitting from the funding is:
- N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre will receive $3,000 through the Aboriginal Presenters in the North: Music Event program toward events planned for the summer solstice, as well as National Aboriginal Day on June 20–21, 2012.
- Silver Birch String Quartet will receive $11,000 through the Northern Arts program.
- Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario will receive $5,000 to help with operations and other projects.
- Collège Boréal, Les Concerts La Nuit sur l’étang and Le Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury will each receive $294 through the Travel Assistance program to attend Contact Ontarois 2012, a provincial performing arts networking event.
The 2009 Ontario Budget provided an increase of $5 million to the OAC, bringing its budget to almost $60 million; an increase of 140 per cent since 2003.
The OAC is a publicly funded, independent agency of the government of Ontario. OAC has been supporting Ontario-based artists and not-for-profit arts organizations since 1963. OAC’s mission is to promote and assist the development of the arts for the benefit and enjoyment of all Ontarians.

- The culture sector generates $19.7 billion of Ontario’s gross domestic product; more than Ontario’s agriculture, fishing, mining, oil and gas extraction and utilities industries combined.- In 2009-2010, the Ontario Arts Council funded 1,697 individual artists and 1,013 organizations in 236 communities across Ontario for a total of $51.8 million.
- More than 250,000 people earn their living in Ontario’s culture sector.
