Cambrian offers new carpentry program this fall

This fall, Cambrian College will be offering a new hands-on program that will develop students’ skills in renovation, construction, and carpentry.

This fall, Cambrian College will be offering a new hands-on program that will develop students’ skills in renovation, construction, and carpentry.

Called Carpentry Renovation Techniques, the program is based on the former Carpenter General program, and it will appeal to those seeking to earn credentials, upgrade their skills, or advance their career in the renovation industry.

“Over the past five years, thousands of people have applied to Ontario college programs in the field of construction and renovation, and that demand is expected to continue,” Cambrian College president Sylvia Barnard said, in a press release.

“However, our research shows that prospective students are not leaving Cambrian’s traditional northern Ontario catchment area to pursue carpentry or renovation programs in other parts of the province.

“We know that there is pent-up demand for this program in the north, and we already have excellent shop facilities and experienced faculty, so we’re very excited to invite students to join us for the Carpentry Renovation Techniques program beginning this fall.”

The program will take 36 weeks to complete, but during that time, students will gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in key areas, such as building codes, residential estimating, framing and layout, woodworking, welding, and rigging.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will gain a Renovation Techniques certificate, which will prepare them for a career in construction or home renovations.

Some graduates may use their certificate to advance them on the path to apprenticeship training, to start working in the field, or to launch their own business.

On June 14, Cambrian’s board of governors approved two new graduate certificate programs it plans to offer starting in 2013.

Both programs offer flexible online delivery and are for qualified students who already possess a relevant postsecondary diploma or degree.

The Applied Learning Disability Studies program will provide specialized skills and experience in the area of learning disabilities and the theory, techniques and technologies related to that rapidly expanding field.

The Managing Organizations program will offer students core management skills with optional streams to meet specific demands for managers in different sectors, including health, non-profit, community services, and technology and skilled trades.

The new programs will be offered pending approval by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

The Applied Learning Disability Studies and the Managing Organizations programs are intended to help meet increasing demand in these fields, and to provide upward mobility for professionals working to advance in their careers.
