Think you can be mayor of Greater Sudbury?

Well, Greater Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk thinks so, and she’s willing to give two local high school students the chance to prove it.

This fall, Matichuk is launching a “Mayor for the Day” contest.

Any Grade 10 student in the city is welcome to share their vision for the City of Greater Sudbury over the next 25 years and earn the chance to spend a day working alongside the mayor at city hall.

“Young people have so much to offer their community, in terms of energy and vision,” said Matichuk.

“In 25 years, they will be leaders in this community. I would like to see young people start thinking about community issues now, to imagine the kind of city they want to live in and then share it with us.”

The task ... Imagine the City of Greater Sudbury over the next 25 years.

What should Greater Sudbury have more of? Less of? What will the community look like? What will Greater Sudburians be doing for fun? For work? What will be Greater Sudbury’s role in Ontario, Canada or the world?

“As mayor, what are some initiatives you would implement in order to create a thriving, healthy community and a safe place to live, learn, work and play?” Matichuk asks. “I want to hear all of your ideas.”

Entries can include a short essay, a video, a photo essay, a song, a poem or any combination of these. Entries will be judged on creativity, thoughtfulness and an understanding of local issues.
