Help a Hero

While Canadians don't have to see war in their backyards, the devastating effects can still hit quite close to home. To aid in combating the harsh realities of war, a group of socially-minded students have established the Canadian Hero Fund to offer financial assistance to help families who have lost a love one in war.

Tim Peters, a part-time Copper Cliff resident, is president of the organization.

“The main thing we do is ... provide scholarships to children of fallen soldiers,” he said.

This year, students attending the University of New Brunswick, University of Saskatchewon, Grant MacEwan University are eligible for the scholarships. More than $40,000 will be given to students the organization feels are deserving this year.

The organization raises funds through initiatives like its 11 for 11 campaign. The signature annual fundraising drive calls on community members to make $11 donations throughout the first 11 days on November. Now in its third year, the campaign has raised more than $90,000, and has garnered support from actors like Paul Gross and the rock band The Trews.

When people download the band's Highway of Heroes, funds raised go to supporting the Canadian Hero Fund, and makes the war effort more relevant to younger generations.

“Schools across Canada end up singing that song during their Remembrance Day ceremonies,” Peters said. This year, students from Copper Cliff Public School made it part of their service.

“It helps engage youth,” Peters said.

On top of working with performers, the Fund has also partnered with the UFC and NHL teams.
